Palin Hits Obama on ACORN

October 17, 2008 1:51 PM

In West Chester, Ohio, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin today attacked Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for "fuzzing up" his relationship with the controversial group ACORN, which lobbies for low-income Americans and has been under fire for fraudulent voter registrations.

"Sen. Obama won't tell you the full truth about his tax increases, and now he's kinda fuzzing up his connections to ACORN," said Palin, of the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now.

"Now, ACORN is under investigation for rampant voter fraud in thirteen states," Palin said, herself "fuzzing up" the difference between fraudulent voter registration forms and voter fraud, which is quite different.

Palin then detailed the myriad connections between Obama and the group. "Now, Obama says that his only involvement with ACORN was when he represented the group as a lawyer," she said. "But what about the training that he provided ACORN in the past and ACORN staff, and his role in past ACORN voter registration efforts? And then, there's the $200,000 that he got for ACORN when he was on the board of the Woods Fund. And the fact that ACORN endorsed him this year and they're working pretty hard on his behalf."

She also noted that "a front group for ACORN received over $800,000 from the Obama campaign."

"All of this would be a lot of baggage to drag into the Oval Office," Palin said. "And Americans are entitled to answers before Election Day ... John and I are calling on the Obama campaign to release communications it has had with this group and to do so immediately."

She ended her remarks by saying she knew Ohioans wouldn't "let them turn the Buckeye State into the Acorn State."

UPDATE: Obama spox Tommy Vietor writes: "We have not worked with ACORN at all in the general election. Rather than make these false, desperate attacks, Sen. McCain should release an economic plan that actually helps the middle class instead of giving billions in tax cuts to big corporations."

With her 1.89 GPA you can
expect Palin to be fuzzed
up on the simplest of issues.

Common Sense, first of all I don't expect you to vote for McCain-Palin. I do expect everyone to respect the institution of our election process and take voter registration seriously.

As for the Battle of Iraq, we did not go into the war based on lies. If that were the case, then why have you and others not blasted President Clinton, Sen. Clinton, Sen. Kerry, Sen. Rockefeller, and dozens of others for the "lies" that they told about Iraq having WMDs and being an "imminent" threat? The fact is that whether Iraq had WMDs or not is irrelevant. We invaded Iraq because President Bush, after 12 years of diplomatically attempting to convince Saddam Hussein to comply with the conditions of the 1991 cease fire, decided that was long enough. And he rescinded the cease fire and resumed the original 1991 Gulf War.

James Danley,

The people fighting in Iraq are fighting a war based on lies. Over 4,000 Americans have died over the lies the Republicans told and sold to us.

NOW, YOU EXPECT US TO ELECT THE MCCAIN-PALIN TICKET AS THEY LIE AND ARE EXPOSED FOR IT DAILY.

Please!

Our most cherished right as an American citizen is the right to vote. That right to vote and the entire election process is what millions of our bravest citizens have fought and died for throughout our history. When one part of the election process loses its integrity the entire process is undermined. Those who consider voter registration fraud as no big deal, show little respect for the election process? And that is like spitting in the face of the men and women who have died for your right to vote.

Yavo Lem cites Obama's comments at the Waldorf saying he could see the Russian Tea Room as evidence that Obama stretches the truth. He is clearly on to something. I went to Alaska and, to my amazement, I could suddenly speak Russian. Sarah Palin is right. Very far right...so far right she has to look left to look right. Yavo, if you stand at the Waldorf and look left, you will see a store that sells a "sense of humor". Try one on. By the way, Obama was speaking at the Alfred E. Smith benefit dinner (a humor roast) with fellow comedian, John McCain when he made the Russian Tea Room comment!

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Obama campaign announced Friday that it is asking Attorney General Michael Mukasey to turn over any investigations of voter fraud or voter suppression to Special Prosecutor Nora Dannehy.

Dannehy is also the special prosecutor recently appointed to investigate the U.S. attorney firing scandal.

It's the latest salvo in an escalating war over allegations of possible voter irregularities during the upcoming presidential election.

"What they're actually about is the unprecedented effort to essentially sap the American people of confidence in the voting process," Bob Bauer, the Obama campaign's general counsel, said Friday on a conference call.

Bauer said partisan politics was behind Thursday's leak from senior governmental officials about a preliminary FBI investigation into the voter registration activities of ACORN, the embattled community organizing group that has become the focus of Republican efforts to highlight possible fraud as the election approaches. Watch the latest report on ACORN's voter registration efforts »

"ACORN is a tool for attacking voters," Bauer said.

"We need to have these matters removed from the day-to-day department's direct control and put into the special prosecutor's independent hands," Bauer told reporters Friday. "She should have responsibility for reviewing any and all matters involving allegations of fraud and suppression in this election."

Oh,

Sarah Palin irritates me to no end every time she opens her mouth. I wouldn't mind her folksiness or her pro-life views and her holier-than-thou mentality as much if SHE WOULD STOP BEING SUCH A HYPOCRITE AND INTENT TO JUMP ON IRRELEVANT AND UNTRUE ISSUES.

Gov. Palin, let me explain it to you. It goes like this. ACORN paid people to go and register voters. Some of those people were too lazy to actually earn that money and instead sat down and opened a phone book or scribbled made-up names. NOTHING TO DO WITH OBAMA. These people won't even show up to vote if they're made up.

Hey, Sarah, McCain was a keynote speaker for ACORN only a few years ago, what have you got to say about that?

How about your ethics violations?

Can you show me you actually know something about world affairs other then being able to see the former Soviet Union from your state?

Posted by: Grey Matter | Oct 18, 2008 6:55:40 AM

It is really idiotic to suggest that a person can actually vote more than once in this country. You simply cannot. Voter registration is not the same as actually voting. Poor McCain/Palin... Smearing everybody with this simple-minded stupidity is getting boring.

"Kathy, I have to show my drivers license when I vote. You have to have a valid drivers license or ID when voting in OH. "

---------

WHAT IF YOU'RE MAILING A WRITE-IN BALLOT?

Do you include your license in the letter?
If you just send in the informtion on the license it can be duplicated by others.

The Associated Press reported Friday that the New Mexico GOP found 28 people who voted fraudulently in Albuquerque during the June Democratic primary by absentee ballot. One of the ballots was cast from someone named "Duran-Duran"

"When you register the same person multiple times, when you register fictional characters, when you register dead people and when you register 300 people at the same 1200 square foot home it is not a question of "deserving scrutiny". It is a question of how many people and which ones should be put in jail for fraud."

I for one am glad that McCain and Palin are strong enough to have brought this travesty of Democracy to the public, even though they knew that they would be clubed for doing so,

Sarah has more balls then Barack!

Yavo Lem: The event you caught a clip from was a charity event sponsored by the archdiocese of New York. John McCain and Barack Obama were both there. What you heard was a piece from light hearted speeches given by both mean. If you listen to the whole thing you would understand what was happening. There was very little seriousness in most of what Obama and McCain were saying---it was all in fun.

Palin was not casting stones, she was stating the facts. iT'S up to you to punish the Obama campaign.

By the way, Domestic Violence must be approved where you are from, But in Alaska, where this trooper fazed his ten year old son, i'd say that was domestic Violence and he needed to losked up and have his guns and other weapons taken away from him. Now the Palin family is definitely at risk. He may ambush them when they get home.

Did you here about the Police Chief Brame murder/suicidee in Washington State a while ago. He threatened his wife vand then after he lost it, he shot her and himself. So if you say palin did something wrong, it would have been not locking this trooper up for fazing his kid. Wow, you Dems don't really care about anybody but your own party.

We know a lot about Sen. McCain, we know quite a bit about Gov. Palin, and we know a lot about Sen Biden.

What do we know about Sen. Obama, who not long ago advised against "buying a pig in a poke"?

Forget Sarah Palin, John McCain, and Republicans. Please rationally evaluate this whole situation. Attempt to go beyond party lines.
__________

From October 6 through October 15, CNN ran at least 54 segments mentioning allegations that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now [ACORN] submitted allegedly false or duplicate voter registration applications this year in a number of states, according to a Media Matters for America search* of the Nexis database. But only one of those segments mentioned both of the following two relevant points: 1) that the statutes of most of those states require third parties registering prospective voters to submit all registration forms they receive; and 2) that actual instances of illegal votes being cast as a result of registration fraud are extremely rare. Indeed, in an October 10 press release, ACORN noted that "in almost every state we are required to turn in ALL completed applications, even the ones we know to be problematic." And in a 2007 report titled "The Truth About Voter Fraud," New York University's Brennan Center for Justice stated, "[W]e are aware of no recent substantiated case in which registration fraud has resulted in fraudulent votes being cast." Of the 54 CNN segments addressing the allegations against ACORN, two mentioned only the former of those two points, while one mentioned just the latter.

While the media have devoted great attention to charges of voter fraud, in past election cycles such charges have largely proven baseless. According to the Brennan Center:

There have been several documented and widely publicized instances in which registration forms have been fraudulently completed and submitted. But it is extraordinarily difficult to find reported cases in which individuals have submitted registration forms in someone else's name in order to impersonate them at the polls. Furthermore, most reports of registration fraud do not actually claim that the fraud happens so that ineligible people can vote at the polls. Indeed, we are aware of no recent substantiated case in which registration fraud has resulted in fraudulent votes being cast.

Additionally, an October 16 ABCNews.com article reported that Sen. John McCain's "voter fraud worries -- about ACORN or anyone else -- are unsupported by the facts, said experts on election fraud, who recall similar concerns being raised in several previous elections, despite a near-total absence of cases." The article quoted David Becker, "a lawyer for the Bush administration until 2005, in the Justice Department's voting rights section, which was part of the administration's aggressive anti-vote-fraud effort," who stated, "There's no evidence that any of these invalid registrations lead to any invalid votes" and added: "The Justice Department really made prosecution of voter fraud of this sort a big priority in the first half of this decade, and they really didn't come up with anything."

Indeed, the U.S. Department of Justice crime statistics cast doubt on the existence of widespread voter fraud. According to a report by the Justice Department's Criminal Division of prosecutions between October 2002 and September 2005, the Justice Department charged 95 people with "election fraud" and convicted 55. Among those, however, just 17 individuals were convicted for casting fraudulent ballots; cases against three other individuals were pending at the time of the report. Further, on April 12, 2007, The New York Times reported, "Five years after the Bush administration began a crackdown on voter fraud, the Justice Department has turned up virtually no evidence of any organized effort to skew federal elections, according to court records and interviews."

During a report on the October 12 edition of CNN Sunday Morning -- the only CNN report to mention both of the above points -- anchor Betty Nguyen aired a clip from ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis's October 10 interview on CNN's Larry King Live, in which Lewis said: "First of all, in every county when you register voters, you've got to turn in every single card no matter how weird or wacko it may appear, that's the law." Later in the segment, Nguyen asked Demos.org's Steve Carbo, "I mean, are these numbers inflated here or is ACORN truly involved in voter fraud?" Carbo replied, "I think we need to be clear about what voter fraud is. The record shows that it's exceedingly rare for individuals to show up on the polls on Election Day and pretend to be other people, to vote twice, to vote illegally."

Three segments mentioned one, but not both points. Two segments mentioned that many states require ACORN to submit all registration forms it received. On the October 10 edition of Larry King Live, Lewis said, "First of all, in every county when you register voters, you've got to turn in every single card no matter how weird or wacko it may appear, that's the law." In a later segment on the same broadcast, after radio host Stephanie Miller called the allegations against ACORN "a non-story," King asked her, "Because you have to bring whatever they fill out?" Miller replied, "Yes."

One additional segment suggested that voter fraud is extremely rare. During a roundtable on the October 11 edition of CNN Newsroom, civil rights attorney Avery Friedman said, "Now in reality, when either Mr. or Ms. Turkey show up at the voting booth, today there is a built-in protective mechanism. So, although it sounds like a big deal, and I think some of the partisans are trying to paint it that, for those people who get minimum wage, who have quotas, those people are in trouble for doing these kinds of things. But the bottom line is that the system will work. I don't think Jive Turkey will be voting this November."

I think Obama should force everyone to give a certain percentage to charity. That would solve alot of problems.

I don't get something. I don't see Obama spreading his wealth around. Does anyone know what he's given to charity over the last 5 years?
