Palin: ‘I Begged Our Speechwriters, "Don't Make Me Say Joe the Plumber"'

October 17, 2008 9:35 AM

At a fundraiser in North Carolina last night, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said she sometimes gets "depressed" watching the media coverage of this race, and also suggested she didn't particularly want to discuss Joe the Plumber, unlike the man at the top of the ticket.

Palin talked about "those times on the campaign trail when sometimes it’s easy to get a little bit discouraged, when, you know, when you happen to turn on the news when your campaign staffers will let you turn on the news. Usually they’re like, 'Oh, my gosh, don’t watch, you’re going to, you know, you’re going to get depressed.' But yeah, sometimes you do get depressed watching what it is that they’re reporting, and the spin and some of the distortion of what our message is and what we stand for -- sometimes that, that gets draining."

She gets "energized and inspired" when she meets supporters, however, Palin said. "We feel your strength and we feel the power of prayer; so many of you tell us that you are praying for us and praying for our country, and that’s why we so appreciate you being here."

The Alaska governor said the election in 18 days "is the choice between a candidate who will raise your taxes and that threatens our future, and a leader who’s going to Washington to work for Joe the Plumber, as you heard a lot about last night. And I, I begged our speechwriters, 'Don’t make me say Joe the Plumber, please, in any speeches.'

"And I was asked, 'Just one time, just at this fundraiser.'"

We took a look at Joe the Plumber last night on "Nightline." Watch HERE.

Ryan: I don't need a lecture on how SCHIP works. I've been there, done that. You're missing my point: While it may cost "little to none" for these families, it still costs the taxpayers. And those "premiums" can vary anywhere from $5 to $200+ a month. I know - I've paid them.

On another note, I need to ask some questions that have been burning a hole in my mind for ages. You appear to subscribe to the "spreading the wealth" philosophy and seem more than willing to give "answers," since I see your name scattered hither and yon throughout these blogs, so maybe you have answers to these, too:

Based upon the ideologies behind this political philosophy, is it fair or right or good, in "spreading the wealth to those behind you," for PERSON A to work, maybe even 2 or 3 jobs at a time, just to make ends meet while PERSON B refuses to work, knowing they will be supported by social programs (aka WELFARE), paid for through taxes levied against PERSON A? What if PERSON A were disabled yet chose to remain in the workforce and PERSON B were perfectly able-bodied but just not "motivated" enough to pry themselves from the cable TV that PERSON A cannot afford? If someone's deliberately refusing to contribute SOMETHING to benefit society, why should society spread anything to them, including the means of continuing to drain resources handed up on a silver platter?

dw - I'm so glad you noticed me enough to call me out by name what with your smart thinkin' and all. I'm not worthy of your "Bradley Effect" algorythims because you are way too smart for the rest of us. Thank you for your insights. I'm sure you know what you're sayin'

Posted by: lily | Oct 17, 2008 6:40:23 PM

NO! Sarah please don't tell me that someone with such a high functioning, intellectual brain like yours doesn't write anything she says? Oh, gosh. Now I'm so confused because some of that mavericky stuff you were sayin' there was really startin' to get me fired up. I was even thinkin' about givin' Joe Six-Pack a little some'in some'in if ya know what I mean. Wink Wink

I am an independent vote, and i know who to vote on November 4. I consider the following criteria
1. Neither of the two candidates can straighthen up economiv recession that we are experiencing.
2. I am not carried away by nice speeches.
3.I do not trust lawyers to be the president of this nation. Law profession is the most evil profession in the world. Lawyers are devil's advocate of elite organized crimes in the USA.
4. I will choose a candidate who is pro-life, with God fearing Christian values and understands the true american values and care much about american freedom.

RED states - turning BLUE. Those are the facts. Deal with it.

"Families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid may be able to qualify for SCHIP.

Families that do not currently have health insurance are likely to be eligible, even if you are working. The states have different eligibility rules, but in most states, uninsured children under the age of 19, whose families earn up to $36,200 a year (for a family of four) are eligible. For little or no cost, this insurance pays for:"

The Bradley effect is going to suprise all of you, and make all of your comments meaningless.

risk avoidance strategy
six pack... one syllable each
plumber.... two syllables

Posted by: OneObservation | Oct 17, 2008 5:34:49 PM

I don't care what's best for Joe the Skin Head, or Joe Six-Pack. America can't afford four more years of tax and spend Republicans in the White House.

Posted by: hamishdad | Oct 17, 2008 5:17:09 PM

Uh, Ryan? SCHIP is NOT free. There ARE premiums to pay every month on this. Granted, they are reduced, but...
IT.
IS.
NOT.
FREE.

Not free to the parent, and certainly not "free" to the taxpayers subsidizing the program.

Kind of funny that the whole Joe the Plumber thing has backfired, like just about every ploy coming from the McCain/Palin camp. Joe the Plumber probably has more attention on his less than high standing actions than he wants now! Boy oh boy. Oops.

What is just becoming increasingly clear is that Palin is sorely under-qualified. Bless her heart. McCain's choice in picking her as VP candidate was a disservice to this nation on so many levels and is flat-out dangerous to this country's well being and security.

McCain has simply sunk himself. If people are really keeping up on the facts, reading and listening and not just picking up on what they want to hear or succumbing to the ridiculous scare tactics, you will see that Mr.Obama has been very up-front and solid, while Mr.McCain keeps harping on the same lines over and over again, even after Mr.Obama has explained himself thoroughly.

Both Pain and McCain are simply sticking to their negative rhetoric to try to undermine Mr.Obama's character and ability, they have nothing left to try because their ideas are counter-productive to the overall needs of this nation and the collective majority of its people and folks are recognizing that.

The fact is that Palin was a very bad decision when it comes down to who America needs to represent our country and who is most qualified professionally to step into the roll of the highest job positions in the United States.

Mr.Obama has shown time and again that he will be an effective leader, and he has the intelligence and calm demeanor to make level-headed decisions to the betterment of us all.

This is a job interview, and while McCain surely has the years behind him, Palin is too risky a gamble and choosing her lays bare McCain's lack of good judgment regarding the safety and well being of this nation.

Being from MICHIGAN my feelings are a little indifferent when it comes to Joe "the plumber"...especially after he was photographed in that ::cringe:: Buckeye hoody...I think Ken "The artist" should be photographed in his WOLVERINE jersey for equal air time.

Sarah Palin scares me, and if McCain/Palin win, I'm joining Tina Fey and leaving Earth because as she says, "I can't do that for four years." But doggone it to heck, I'm rootin' for this woman to utter even one coherent, logical sentence that hasn't been scripted for her. I really want to be able to say, "Ah, now I see why McCain chose her for this important role." I'm still waiting for this to happen. Don't make me say "Joe the Plumber"? I don't get it - she's worn "Joe SixPack" out; isn't that her and McCain's contention, that Joe the Plumber IS Joe SixPack?

"And Obama plans to fine parents (the first time in history) and business owners who don't purchase health insurance which he lied about the other night."

He did not lie. McCain lied when he said Obama would fine small business owners when small business owners are specifically exempt from providing coverage. Obama even adds a 50% credit for small biz owners that do provide their employee with health coverage.

And its not a fine for larger business but a tax (something you were fine on McCain doing to workers but not ok for large companies) to help pay for their employees healthcare if they get it elsewhere.

In terms of parents, coverage of children will be mandated but there will be several options for providing health care including free public programs like SCHIP.

While the media investigates the trash can on Joe the Plumber, they let ObamACORN get a free pass?

Just who is running for president? Joe or ObamACORN?

Moreover, media repeat after me, this has nothing to do with what (or who) the "real Joe is. It has everything to do with what ObamACORN's response was to Joe the Plumber.

ObamACORN is a Marxist who wants to take your success and spread it around to those behind you.

And Obama plans to fine parents (the first time in history) and business owners who don't purchase health insurance which he lied about the other night. His system can only work two ways, either force more people into the system or have govt. take it over completely.

"If McCain's analysts are bogus then Obama's are too. Do you really need an analyst to tell what is common sense, do you really need to be lead around by the nose?"

I suspect Ryan C is an Obama paid blogger, so no matter what you post he'll put a spin on it.

Posted by: Mack | Oct 17, 2008 2:17:16 PM

"If McCain's analysts are bogus then Obama's are too."

There are independent analysis out there for both plans. Obama's supporters don't rely on bogus studies like you did.

"Do you really need an analyst to tell what is common sense, do you really need to be lead around by the nose?"

Here's common sense, McCain plans to tax me and 50% of the people who get employer provided health benefits on those benefits for the 1st time in history.
