The Great Debate

October 07, 2008 8:39 PM

NASHVILLE, TENN. -- We're here at Curb Arena at Belmont University for the second presidential debate.

Right now the dudes from the Commission on Presidential Debates are talking.

Meanwhile, an e-mail comes across my screen:

Markets are open in Asia ... and it looks like the sour trading day in the Americas has rolled across the Pacific.

Japan: Down 2.67%
Australia: Down 4.06%
New Zealand: Down 2.03%
Korea: Down 2.72%

McCain is so out of touch with the realities of the average American family that it is truly frightening. Just the idea of a spending freeze makes my shudder. And his idea of just giving people money for insurance is completely out of touch. That money does you no good if you can't get coverage because of a pre-existing condition - and we arent' talking about cancer. I was turned down simply because I'd been on anti-depressants for six months following my father's death.

Personally, I don't want politicians with experience any more. It was never suppose to be a career - it was suppose to be real people serving their country for a sort time and then returning to their real lives.

Obama was a community organizer and a civil rights attorney. Instead of going to some high dollar law firm, he worked with American families in crises. This is the type of man I want running our country. Not someone that has no idea how many houses he owns.

Did you know Obama diverted $50-100M away from a goal to improve the education of poor children to give it to Acorn and Ayers instead?

There is nothing known about how Acorn and Ayers spent the money, there were no strings attached.

Neither Obama, nor Acorn, nor Ayers will talk about this transfer of money other than to say what Obama did was "legal" given Obama had the sole authority and responsibility.

If Obama will do this with grant money, just think what he can do with the US Treasury.

In the first version of the $700Billion bailout, someone tried to give a portion of it to Acorn. It was removed from the final version.

Per the link provided:

"Singlaub said McCain was a supporter but not an active member.

"McCain was a new guy on the block learning the ropes," Singlaub said. "I think I met him in the Washington area when he was just a new congressman. We had McCain on the board to make him feel like he wasn't left out. It looks good to have names on a letterhead who are well-known and appreciated.

"I don't recall talking to McCain at all on the work of the group," Singlaub said.

McCain has said he resigned from the council in 1984 and asked in 1986 to have his name removed from the group's letterhead.

"I didn't know whether (the group's activity) was legal or illegal, but I didn't think I wanted to be associated with them," McCain said in a 1986 newspaper interview."

So, JM was NOT an active member and was NOT told what was happening.

Just another Obama attack with no basis to try to offset the fact Obama gave $50-100M to Acorn and Ayers.

McCain for President! Obama is a socialist. Look up the definition. This country was not created as a democracy. It was created as a republic. How many of you know our Constitution? If Obama becomes president , our country will fall people. Sorry. Been around long enough to know.

Obama was given $50-100M to improve the education of students in Chicago. Who did he give the money to and what was the result?

He gave the money to Acorn and Ayers.

The effect on education?

Zip. Nada. Nothing.

Except Acorn and Ayers have supported Obama ever since.

Today, US corporations have the 2nd highest tax rate in the world. The high tax rate in the US has the effect of encouraging companies to export our jobs to other countries.

Obama would greatly increase taxes on successful companies and will add additional tax penalties for companies that are "caught" exporting jobs.

Therefor it will be in companies best interest to add new jobs and new plants overseas and existing jobs will not be "exported" but be allowed to wither away.

Foreign as well as domestic companies will be discouraged from setting up new manufacturing in the US.

Lowering tax rates for corporations will allow more US companies to be successful with tax revenues often rising more than any "tax break" loss of revenue.

Sue Ellen you do not have all of the facts correct. Someone who has waited till they are 40 to try and get health insurance more than likely has a need beyond what is considered in basic underwriting. Coverage can more than likely be obtained but it could have some preexisting conditions exclusions which would be correct for someone who has never paid into the insurance market and more than likely will be looked at as trying to use the insurance market in a adverse manner. Allowed to buy coverage would or could have a negative effect on everyone else who would end up paying more

Posted by: William | Oct 7, 2008 11:10:20 PM

McCain seemed bitter that he had to debate at all. Perhpas he would rather be king.

Posted by: jtee | Oct 7, 2008 10:54:35 PM

I'm greatly disappointed by our two canidates, and I would really like to NOT vote for either of them, but sadly one of these two canidates are going to be our next President, so with great regret, I will fulfil my duty as a citizen of the the U.S.A and vote for one of them. I do hope though that our next election in 4 years, produces better canidates that I can trust and be proud of.

I believe Mr Obama won this event. Mr McCain still fails to stand up with his parties failures of the past 8 years. We don't want more of that! Then he argues Mr Obama has no experience and doesn't know what he is talking about, which is exactly what we are worrying about with Mrs Palin especially as next in line for the presidency behind an elderly president. Obama is comfortable with this style of addressing the public and appeared more presidential to me. Mr McCain has that strange smile that is sometimes insincere and much like the Bush grin we are all too happy to see leave soon.

Our nation was partly founded on taxation without representation, now it seems to be taxation with representation. Why does the common person, who pays most of the taxes, has to pay for the mistakes our government makes in spending and all the special projects that line the pockets of congressmen and the Whitehouse.

Posted by: Diana | Oct 7, 2008 10:38:11 PM

What don't you know???...Mc Cain answered this extremely well. Like a true leader.

If Barack mentions Michelle one more time ...First she was the wisest person he knows then she knows what I don't know...she should be running not him.

Posted by: i am so I can!!!! | Oct 7, 2008 10:35:11 PM

I work at a nursing home and I would like to know what you are going to do with the long term care for are elderly. There is more money for are hospitols toget them well soon. Do you care about are elderly or do you think once they are put in a nursing home we should forget all about them because they will die sooner or later.

Posted by: Adam Cargile | Oct 7, 2008 10:35:04 PM

I would agree that McCain has won the debate. Obama is a great speaker -- but there is nothing of substance in anything that he states. He is the definition of the "spin". The question asked was -- would you support Israel or wait for the UN. McCain answered with what he would do. Obama did not --he discussed the use of tools, leveraging assets, Iran and nukes and ect. He never aswered the question. This is where I struggle w/ him.

In addition, for a man that positions himself as the catalyst for change ... someone needs to look at his 3 mil assistance for the projector. Pretty difficult sell on this one ... really does not support the "change" ideology or the ability to apply reason.

Also, if you listen to his answer to -- what do you not know and how will you learn it -- he did not answer that one either. He gave the BIGGEST political stock answer that was coached.

Posting anti views as different people doesnt convince anyone that alot of people believe the same. Intelligent people know who is the best choice for America. Obama/Biden Time!

Posted by: Fairfax | Oct 7, 2008 10:29:25 PM

Sorry, you people really don't know much about the health care industry! Insurance companies pick and choose who to insure and what price they will ask you to pay. If you have ANY preexisting condition, you are rejected. You young readers, wait until you hit 40 and try to get insurance once they see you once played football or broke your leg skiing. You will defend the industry until you hit that brick wall!!!!

Posted by: Sue Ellen | Oct 7, 2008 10:25:47 PM

I give McCain 30% to Obama 70%. This race is over. Obama will be the next president of the United States. We republcan lost realty and need to re-group for 2012. I hope next time we are smarter and pick better candidates to represents us the GOP. Sarah Palin, is just to a good candidate..Is that the bedt we can do????Then shame on US AMERCANS. I WILL GLADLY CAST MY VOTE FOR OBAMA.

Posted by: Herry d Williams | Oct 7, 2008 10:23:27 PM

Obama is absolute wrong on health care. He proves his entire lack of how the industry is regulated. Health Insurance companies are regulated at the state level and include any coverage which is required by either the state or the federal government. In most case they provide much more than what is spelled out by law. They can hide in any fashion by moving from one state to another. More hot hot air which a lot of people will accept from the pulpit.

Posted by: William | Oct 7, 2008 10:20:43 PM

Obama's health care plan will bankrupt America...and then, he wants to place fines on parents that can't afford insurance for their children...is this guy nuts?

Posted by: david from texas | Oct 7, 2008 10:20:05 PM

I am so sorry. McCain again lost this debate. I just dont undestand what are they are doing to this man. He looked and acted old. Barck Obama looked very presidential and responded well to the questions. I am an independent voter and tonight I dont need no further proof. I will vote for the best ticket Obama/Biden.

Posted by: Anthony Penrose | Oct 7, 2008 10:19:38 PM

Blah, Blah,Blah. Both candidates are distracting us from the issues we are concerned with such as AFFORDABLE health care and fixing this hugh economic mess. They are devoting more time to Pakistan than the important issues for Americans. Frankly, I am tired of being the World's police at the expense of our citizens.

Posted by: Sue Ellen | Oct 7, 2008 10:19:37 PM

McCain is ripping Obama to pieces in this debate. Obama is clueless!

Posted by: david from texas | Oct 7, 2008 10:18:04 PM

As a republican if this was to be a game changer I dont see it. In fact I thought I McCain was to shime on this type of format. I did not see nothing new tonight. I know now for sure who to vote for and thats not John McCain. He sounded like a grumpy old men.

Posted by: Mike-Pa | Oct 7, 2008 10:16:02 PM

“I saw no evidence of a radical streak, either overt or covert, when we were together at Harvard Law School,” said Bradford A. Berenson, who worked on the Harvard Law Review with Mr. Obama and who served as associate White House counsel under President Bush. Mr. Berenson, who is backing Mr. McCain, described his fellow student as “a pragmatic liberal” whose moderation frustrated others at the law review whose views were much farther to the left.

Posted by: Fairfax | Oct 7, 2008 10:15:58 PM

they are talking jibberish i need more facts about the economy and health care to make sure that my childrens future will not be a waste.

Posted by: vaughn | Oct 7, 2008 10:11:12 PM

Who is willing to step up and show some real courage and set significantly lower spending limits on Presidential, Senatorial and Congressional races. Additionally, set strict camapin time limits in order that there is someone in Washington to do their jobs. Spending is out of control and campains are continuous from one election to another. How can we solve our National issues when politicians are totally focused on raising money and campaining?

Posted by: Real Courage | Oct 7, 2008 10:07:45 PM

Is health care costs up because of nuisance, lawsuits, is this one of the reasons for escalating health care costs.
after all, most of our legislatures are attorneys and want to protect their own kind. What oversights do we have to check the increases in health care costs.

Posted by: Robert Hack | Oct 7, 2008 10:06:29 PM

Health Care: Obama gets it, McCain does not. No matter how much money the government wants to give us, if we have no health insurance company who will take it, what good does that do. And, the insurance industry is VERY selective which is why so many are uninsured! Plus, the older you get, the less they cover even if you have been healthy for years...

Posted by: Sue Ellen | Oct 7, 2008 10:06:09 PM

for heavn's sake please stop talking to me as if I were your personal friend or demented. I am neither. I cannot stand being talked down to Mr. Mccain

Posted by: amie benir | Oct 7, 2008 10:03:49 PM

How do I get questions sent to the live debate to be asked?

Is there a site or phone number?

Posted by: Adam | Oct 7, 2008 9:59:51 PM

I"ll tell you all what !!
how about we the people take that 850 billion dollars and split it up between all tax paying adult american citizens ?
I for one would pay off my mortgage, pay off all credit card debt! buy a new car ( energy friendly of coarse !! )
and turn the furnace on b4 dec 24th ..
that is probubly way better than any fanny and freddy will do with it !!
ps I could then afford to buy american and snub my nose at all of those cheap foreign products that are painted with lead and filled with chemicals !!! to kill us all !!
show me the money or put it back !!!!!!

I am a middle age Grandmother of two beautiful children. In this county we have a growing population of first generation parents raising their second generation. In some cases the drugs, some cases lack of educations, some cases parents were lost to gun fire. what ever the case we are raising these children. WHY CAN'T WE GET A TAX BREAK, EDUCATION INCENTIVE. My oldest grandchild has a reading challenge I invested over $5500.00 in a tutoring program ( because in two years of waiting Reading Enhancement Programs make it in the schools budget. NOT FAIR

Posted by: so tired | Oct 7, 2008 9:54:09 PM

What about the middle class that does not have any children.. Get real.. I am one of those losing my home, and the cause is loss of work. Not a bad loan..

Posted by: beverly nealis | Oct 7, 2008 9:53:58 PM

The thing to keep in mind ... questions are placed and scripted. Thereby, allowing the canidadtes to prepare for the debate prior to. The issue ... is not about who performs best. The issue is more about who will you place in your cabinet that will devise and advise on policy and course correction. The President is not a sole source of decision making ... just a cog in the wheel -- that the powers that be -- elect. Also, does anyone find it quite funny that neither of them can respect the limit of time.

Posted by: Tim | Oct 7, 2008 9:53:30 PM

Obama is it a commodity or not...he beats around the bush and wastes his time giving too much info on how he gets asked this question blah blah blah

Posted by: i am so I can!!!! | Oct 7, 2008 9:52:53 PM

IS this debat about answering the questions or pointing the finger?
Enough!!!!

Posted by: Maria | Oct 7, 2008 9:43:13 PM

McCain's nastiness turned me off in just 1/2 hour. Does anyone wonder beside me why it is so necessary to be as nasty to be a politician. Palin is as bad or worse? Are they trying to tell us they are afraid.

Posted by: montana | Oct 7, 2008 9:42:29 PM

Did Obama get elected to the seat that he holds. I found out that a women had that seat, she took ill.Obama got enough signatures to take her place. When she got well, she could not get her place back. Is this true.

Posted by: j smith | Oct 7, 2008 9:42:15 PM

Is it too much to ask for a direct answer to the questions? Both candidates are skirting around the questions with their own agendas. It is truly disgusting...why even bother with questions?

Posted by: Dianne Ray | Oct 7, 2008 9:41:57 PM

If Obama is for the working people than why was he above shaking my hand when I flew him to the Nov 07 Democratic National Convention in Las Vegas. I put my hand out he snubbed his nose at me and walked by!!! I was beneath him because I only make 40 a year.

Posted by: Bryan | Oct 7, 2008 9:41:44 PM

Why does McCain struggle to say the word middle class?

He just tried a Palin trick on the medicare question.

Posted by: Craig A | Oct 7, 2008 9:41:35 PM

Leadership is about taking action and inspiring others to take action when no action is being taken. What I have heard tonight -- is nothing that makes me believe that either of them can lead. Obma continues to state -- I sent a letter to this person -- or I called Wall Street -- and no one did anything. Please ... what are you doing in Washington other then displacing blame for the actions that you took -- or did not take. In either case, it is an inditement of one's ability to lead on the grand scale.

Posted by: Tim | Oct 7, 2008 9:39:30 PM

Could Sarah Palin be any worse than Dan Quayle remember he served as Veep und Bush Senior????

Posted by: i am so I can!!!! | Oct 7, 2008 9:37:15 PM

Cough cough...some of us take time to make decisions on something this draconian . And sometimes things come up that have not come up before that can change the perception and the reality of who the candidates are.

Posted by: i am so I can!!!! | Oct 7, 2008 9:35:00 PM

You have think about this if something happens to old Granddaddy McCain then ding dong Palin takes over...now do you really want that??

Just cause she popped out a few kids doesnt mean a dayam thing to me. So what!!! How is McCain going to check out all these government programs?? You just gonna cut all programs that might help keep our children off the streets...that is really stupid.

sit down and let someone else do the job McCain

Posted by: taylor | Oct 7, 2008 9:30:40 PM

anyone who hasnt already made up their mind by now , is a moron. who cares about a silly debate , the issues are clear enough and each candidate has a stated position ,even if one of them DOES go back and forth with the winds of favor...

i dont care if mccain says jesus is going to show up and fix things, obama is still getting my vote.

Posted by: bah | Oct 7, 2008 9:16:55 PM

It's nice for Obama to join McCain finally in a town hall meeting.

Posted by: Patrick | Oct 7, 2008 9:07:40 PM

"Multinational Monitor" published by the Not-For-Profit organization can show you difference between Obama Plan and McCain Plan for "Health-Care." It may be better to contact the field's experts rather than voicing-up our own opinions.

My small IRA is down 44% over the last year. I was counting on it to supplement Social Security, if I live long enough to get it. I don't blame anyone but myself for the loss. But I am disgusted with Congress for embarrassing my country with that dysfunctional bailout legislation.

Posted by: Indy | Oct 7, 2008 9:00:15 PM

I guess Asia has no confidence in an Obama Presidency either. This financial collapse started when obama was declared a lock to win it.

Posted by: geevill | Oct 7, 2008 8:55:29 PM

Commission on Presidential Debates sucks. They allow no third party competition. What a joke this is.

Posted by: Huh | Oct 7, 2008 8:52:14 PM

Well if either one of these men can hit the right note on the economy tonight they get my vote. I don't want to hear Americans are losing their homes and this is what I will do to prevent this...they can't do anything for months and this is taking place now...I want to hear how Barack can do some of the programs he wishes to institute if there is no money ...I want to hear that this is a near collapse of our monetary system and a worldwide crisis that is going to require tough decisions, really tough decisions and this is what I will do to keep us afloat...til this is resolved...that's what I want to hear. Hard facts not big dreams. We are terrified in this country when our financial assets become radioactive; we will react to the one who shows us that we will survivie this kaka fest.
