Troopergate Report Concludes Palin Abused Power
October 10, 2008 8:52 PM
Supporters of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin say it's all just politics cooked up to hurt her, but the special legislative panel convened to investigate whether Palin unlawfully abused her authority in firing the state's public safety commissioner, has issued its report, and the conclusion is she did.
The full 263-page report can be read HERE.
The AP reports that the bipartisan committee concluded that a family grudge wasn't the only reason Palin fired Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan, but was likely was a contributing factor.
Monegan has maintained that he was fired because he refused pressure by Palin to fire a state trooper, Mike Wooten, involved in a bitter divorce with her sister. Palin has called the investigation politically motivated and said she fired Monegan because of a budge dispute.
You can read more about the report HERE.

Manolete - Dream on!! Sarah Palin couldn't name a single newspaper that she reads. She couldn't name a single Supreme Court decision besides Roe v. Wade. She hadn't heard of the Bush Doctrine. These are easy questions. It might be comforting to think it was liberal bias that did this to her, but she brought it on herself. And the intelligent women I know are all pro-Obama.
As an aside, SJ, yeah, I've noticed that too. The spelling and grammar in the comments section has been going to the dogs for a while!!

This is a petty issue that will have no impact on the outcome of the election.

"Very bias, you are."
Small point here, but what is this new thing of people using "bias" as an adjective? "Bias" is a noun. It's something you have or don't have. If you have it, you're "biased."
I did say it was a small point.... I just can't help but notice how people don't seem to be able to spell or use grammar properly anymore.

Troopergate Inquiry finds Sarah Palin GUILTY.
Sarah Palin VIOLATED THE TRUST Alaskans placed in her and BROKE THE LAW as their governor when she fired a state official who had refused to dismiss her ex-brother-in-law from his job as a state trooper, according a legislative report released Friday night.
Ten republicans and four democrats were unanimous in adopting the findings (as they were in initiating the investigation.)
Posted by: Bob | Oct 11, 2008 5:52:30 PM
Sarah hassled Wooten because of personal family ties, using her office to pursue a personal vendetta after a messy divorce from her sister.
Such poor judgement and such small time politics.
If Wooten hadn't been Sarah's ex-brother-in-law the matter would have been left to rest after Wooten's suspension.
Unfortunately Sarah chose to use her office to pursue a personal family issue. Not smart at all.
Posted by: pefros | Oct 11, 2008 4:10:16 PM
It's interesting how right wingers try to demonize the Democrats.
With Sarah Palin, there is no need to demonize her but only to acknowledge the lack of good judgement to try to carry out a personal vendetta against her ex-brother-in-law using the power of the office.
It's not demonic behavior, it's just petty and stupid. Small time mentality, and not that bright.

Emm: Please provide a link to credible proof that Obama spent loads of money to get people to talk. This investigation was started before she was picked for VP, which again brings into question Senator McCain's decision-making skills. Didn't he know about this before he chose her? If he did, why did he choose someone who would provide this kind of distraction?
And the fact that she gave the "First Dude" so much access and control is very worrisome. Yeah, Wooten doesn't seem like a prize, but that cannot excuse her using her authority in an inappropriate manner.
I'll bet she doesn't have the courage to face the media with an actual press conference to address the matter. She didn't do anything illegal, but this does bring up issues of character and truthfulness.
Posted by: Caroline | Oct 11, 2008 3:40:20 PM
The really sad part is Sarah is just so amateurish and dumb to use the power of her office to exercises a personal vendetta against an ex-family member.
That's just really small time mentality, and pretty stupid. And her bone-headed husband was worse.
Sorry, they're small-time politicians with petty intelligence. Way out of their league.
Posted by: pefros | Oct 11, 2008 3:01:27 PM
Is this the same panel that Obama spent loads of taxpayer money to pay the witnesses to change their story?
The guy was lousy at his job and needed to be fired.
Move along, folks. Nothing to see here.

The best home-land security is choosing Obama so the terrorists will not attack the terrorists-friendly President's nation-America. That way, the Country can save huge amount of money, and consequently we all get big tax-refunds.

Grey Matter, Alaska state law gives the Alaska State Personnel Board the jurisdiction over ethics issues. So back on Sept. 1, Gov. Palin requested that the Alaska State Personnel Board review the case. Gov. Palin attempted to block the Alaska state legislature's investigation because: (1) She knew it would be a partisan report, in spite of the committee being bi-partisan (and she was proven right); (2) The Alaska State Personnel Board is already reviewing the case.

Yes, I am laughing at what the pope says, "the democratic party the party of death". How absurd. If the pope told you to jump off a bridge or you won't go to heaven would you believe him and do it. Even though I'm catholic I do have a mind of my own, we all should.
Posted by: d | Oct 11, 2008 12:12:00 PM
I am not specifically a Palin supporter but want to make just one thing clear: As long as the areal residents overwhelmingly support the politician, that politician must be considered to be doing great job for the residents, and that's all about the value-measurement of politicians.

What McCain needs to do is present a clear case like an attorney would do-- lay it out why Barack Obama does not have the judgment to be the commander and chief of our forces or has the judgment to correct the economy with imposing higher taxes or to make the best decisions for pro american policies across the world-- due to some of his bad decisions with groups who have been destructive and hate America's ideals. He can tell people he will go after the ones who committed the crimes on Wall Streeta nd Congress and put them in federal prison. He needs to do this now. Palin is hated by the people in DC because they know when she comes in, many agenices will be cut, gone..why? to bring down the abuses and control wasteful spending.
Posted by: Christie | Oct 11, 2008 11:30:32 AM
Keep dreaming Christie. The rallies she holds are heavily conservative. Even the republicans know that's all she appeals to now. You have me laughing at what the pope says though. And I'm a catholic.

"Geez, why did she fight so hard to block the investigation, then? "
Google "Troopergate" and read the misleading headlines. Then ask yourself the same question again. The Press has found her guilty, based on a meaningless report, released by a panel that has no authority to take further action.
Posted by: rob | Oct 11, 2008 11:20:00 AM
Christie, no one except the base cares about Palin. Her negatives among independents have gone up. And they are the ones she needs to reach. Posted by D-------------------------
Really? I don't think so. The Pope has been outfront saying that the democratic party represents "the party of death" That speaks volumes. Palin supporters are calling into talk radio and are saying they are democrats/independents who support her. You cannot make a blanket claim. Election day, we will all speak about what is happening to our values and direction we are going as a people and crimes being covered up on both sides.

As a result of your intentional omission of the most important language of the report, your readers (most of whom will never take the time to determine what the committee actually decided)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Legislative Panel {not a committee} did nothing but releaese the report. This is from ABC News:
i>"I'm going to vote to release it, but it's not a vote in total agreement" said Republican Sen. Gary Stevens. "There's not a consensus for the conclusion," said GOP Rep. Bill Stoltze. He said he expected there would be "robust and vigorous intellectual debate on that in other corners."
As for hearings to determine if Palin actually abused her power:
"To me, that's the smaller issue of all this" said Democratic Rep. Les Gara, who has been an outspoken critic of Palin's. Any action against the governor would properly come from the state personnel board, said Gara.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
In other words, all they did was vote to release Branchflower's Report. They offered no opinion on the findings. Gara, a Democrat, pretty much admitted that this is a personnel issue under Alaska Law. It appears unlikely the Legislative Panel will take any further action.
Posted by: rob | Oct 11, 2008 11:14:59 AM
Palin is now denying she did anything wrong.
Geez, why did she fight so hard to block the investigation, then? Let's remember the panel was made up of 10 republicans and only four democrats. And the investigation started way before McCain chose her.
Can she just admit it? It really seems quite clear she did something fishy, no matter what she says. I quite frankly find it strange that instead of reporting the "abusive" Wooten to the police on charges of criminal intimidation, she tried to get him fired from his job. The logic just isn't there.

"Between March 23rd and October 1st, various groups, including ACORN, submitted over 252,595 registrations to the Philadelphia County Election Board" with 57, 435 rejected for faulty information. "Most of these registrations were submitted by ACORN, and rejected due to fake social security numbers, incorrect dates of birth, clearly fraudulent signatures, addresses that do not exist, and duplicate registrations. In one case, a man was registered to vote more than 15 times since the Primary election."

The biggest anger should be where the most corruption is which is MUCH bigger than Watergate (which was all politics), is the HIGH crimes in Congress over this cover up what happened with Fannie and Freddie to Countrywide to ACORN. I pray this all comes out and takes it in every direction to Obama, Pelosi, Dodd, Reins, Franks even to Paulson and Chris Cox. Makes you wonder the economy is in ruins, politicans are becoming dirty rich, Obama is close to America haters Scary. It explains to me perfectly why people are angry.

I am not fond of Mc.-Team, but I also hate (Obama/his wife)'s personality very much. Mike!
Rev. Louis Farrakhan: "You are the instruments that God is going to use to bring about universal change. And that is why Barack has captured the youth. And he has involved young people in a political process that they didn't care anything about. That's a sign. When the messiah speaks, the youth will hear. And the messiah is absolutely speaking."
Certainly sounds like Rev. Farrakhan is calling Sen. Obama the messiah in that comment.

Good Morning,
Sarah Palin has not been found guilty of anything. The Branchflower Report is just his report; nothing more, nothing less. He concluded that the primary charge against Sarah was groundless.
Branchflower offers the opinion that Srarah abused her power by not stopping Todd Palin from inquiring about Trooper Wooten's hearing. He concluded that Todd Palin was trying to get Wooten fired, to settle a fammily score.
That is only Branchflower's opinion. It is sort of like when Ken Starr completed his report, and concluded Bill Clinton had committed an impeachable offense.
Posted by: rob | Oct 11, 2008 10:14:17 AM
You notice that the media keeps reporting that Obama is way ahead in the polls yet the stock market continues to tumble. In the media, they tell us that wall street is main street. People are angry because of the corruption and Obama's party and he was in the middle and no one is being punished for the crimes. They want McCain to promise to go after the corruption. Palin did nothing illegal and May God bless her for standing up to that employee who had no ethics whatsoever. The state trooper never got fired. He should be fired. He's a poor excuse for a cop. I am glad the other man was fired. He deserved it. I don't blame Todd at all after the guy made threats to his wife's dad. The dems lead this towards Palin. The public will support her for standing up to the man who has no ethics as he supported a cop who hurt the kid.

Jake: This post is just the type of junk-reportage that feeds the public distrust of the media and the belief that organizations such as ABC are simply incapable of objectively reporting facts.
You state: “The AP reports that the bipartisan committee concluded that a family grudge wasn't the only reason Palin fired Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan, but was likely was a contributing factor.”
Can you please explain why you, in your capacity as ABC News' Senior National Correspondent, intentionally failed to provide your readers with the actual decision of the committee which appears in the short sentence immediately following the reference to “a contributing factor:”
I find that, although Walt Monegan’s refusal to fire Trooper Michael Wooten was not the sole reason he was fired by Governor Sarah Palin, it was likely a contributing factor to his termination as Commissioner of Public Safety. IN SPITE OF THAT, GOVERNOR PALIN’S FIRING OF COMMISSIONER MONEGAN WAS A PROPER AND LAWFUL EXERCISE OF HER CONSTITUTIONAL AND STATUTORY AUTHORITY TO HIRE AND FIRE EXECUTIVE BRANCH DEPARTMENT HEADS.
The committee investigation was instituted to determine if Palin did anything unlawful in the firing of Monegan. You have obviously and intentionally “reported” only a "likely" investigative “finding” of the committee. On the other hand, you have intentionally failed to provide your readers with the ultimate result – the final decision of the investigation: what Gov. Palin did was both “proper” and “lawful”.
As a result of your intentional omission of the most important language of the report, your readers (most of whom will never take the time to determine what the committee actually decided) leave your post with a totally incorrect impression. Why do you do this? Do you simply not care what this type of “reporting” is doing to your profession? Would you please explain in your next post?

Sharon,
Give me a break. Your arguments against Sarah Palin are weak and grabbing at straws at best. Again we are talking about the man at the TOP OF THE TICKET.
If Sarah Palin is a cult of personality then tell your Obamabot pals to stop talking about her and devoting SNL time to her. You guys are the one's who made her famous by attempting to smear her from day one. I have no problem with you guys helping your candidate but the Obama camp has ZERO objectivity when it comes to any issue.
Obama camp whines and demands that McCain controls his crowds and anti-Obama spin ,while Obama never said one word to his minions of supporters like Madonna, Sarah Bernhart and others who spewed venom on Sarah Palin saying that she should be gang raped by black men if she ever sets foot in New York City. Obama never attempted tp apologize for the lipstick comment. Yet when McCain says "That One" everyone goes all berserk.
Posted by: OTown | Oct 11, 2008 9:48:28 AM
Obama goes on about "predatory lending" but it was Clinton who pushed Raines into making more risky loans to those who could not afford them.
Then Obama hired Penny Pritzker, the Queen of the SubPrime mortgage market, as his Finance Chariman.
JIm Johnson, head of Countrywide and another Fannie CEO, was also on Obama's team.
These people destroyed the financial sector of this country and they wer and are Obama team members and advisors.
Obama wants to do for the rest of the economy what these guys have done for Wall St.
Never mind what Obama says- this is what he's done.

Obama’s relationship with. Tony Rezko is problematic. Rezko is a Syrian Arab who helped Obama purchase his home. In addition, Rezko was in partnership with NOI founder Elijah Muhummad’s son, Jabir.
This newest revelation about Obama’s close ties to the Nation of Islam raises serious questions about his own faith and his views on whites, Israel and our nation’s war against Islamic fascism,” said TVC Chairman Rev. Louis P. Sheldon. “Just how many Nation of Islam racists will fill an Obama Administration should he become President of the United States?”
The Nation of Islam is a radical anti-white, anti-Jewish organization, founded by Elijah Muhummad.

Farrikahn sounds alot like the "end times" nuts from Sarah Palin's church.
“Brothers and sisters, Barack Obama to me, is a herald of the Messiah. Barack Obama is like the trumpet that alerts you something new, something better is on the way,”
In any case, there is an actual quote, putting in context what you hear on the heavily edited clip that supposedly has him saying that Obama is the Messiah. In fact, he doesn't really say that at all.
Frankly, I'm not surprised that the Republicans get it wrong, AGAIN!
Posted by: Mike | Oct 11, 2008 9:38:47 AM
O Town -
The same "cult of personality" issue you bring up about Obama can also be said of Palin. We have only known her six weeks and the Republican base is following her without question. They have eaten the "moose stew" and fallen under her spell.
At rallies last week she kept asking, "Who is the real Barack Obama?" Well, who is the real Sarah Palin? The good ol' gal hockey mom or a petty, vindictive normal politician who uses her office to try to settle personal scores?
So, how about Todd Palin was a member of the AIP gate? The Palins sit in church and listen to hate speech gate? Vicki Eisman gate?
There are plenty of shady connections and guilt by association charges on BOTH sides. And McCain's campaign manager was involved in Freddie/Fanny, so they don't want to go there.

Do you think it's ethical for Obama, on the US dime, to go to Kenya and and campaign for Raila Odinga?
Odinga, who's campaign is about (surprise!) change, is an Islamic Supremacist who wants Sharia as the official law of Kenya and wants Christianity outlawed in Kenya.
Obama campaigned for him in 2006.
Anyone want to explain this?

This is how BO’s economic advisor rolls:
Franklin Raines, the former top man at Fannie Mae, bought a three-bedroom, seven-bath penthouse condominium in the West End’s Ritz-Carlton Residences for $4.9 million. The condo has a rooftop terrace with a hot tub, a butler’s pantry, and three parking spaces. Raines, director of the US Office of Management and Budget under President Clinton, was CEO of Fannie Mae from 1999 to 2004.

Do you know what a personality cult is? Do you know what it means when an individual is referred to as “the Messiah”?
It means unquestioning, unfailing allegiance. It means dying for the “Messiah” if it comes to that. Farrakhan has justed elevated Obama to the status of divinity among his followers ( Nation of Islam ).
This “divine” endorsment for Obama comes from a man who organized (or attempted to) the “Million Man March” (was this march really about “individual empowerment” or empowerment for Farrakhan?)and who has no love for Jews or white people ( I know, I’ve read their hate rag). According to Nation of Islam, white people are the obscene product of a mad scientist some two to three thousand years ago.
“Politics of Fear” is becoming a tired response to legitimate questions ABOUT obama and is desensitizing to some very real dangers.

Sarah Palin referred to her family as Alaska's first family, an elitist remark if I ever heard one. I guess she thinks of herself as Sarah 12 pack instead of Joe 6 pack, you know, just somewhat better than the rest of us. Heavens to Betsy, this woman is just a heart beat away from being president, scary, but after all it is Halloween.

You would figure with all the "BAD BAD" things the Republicans have done the past 8 years - the ANOINTED one would be up by 20%. Be afraid come election days my Dem and liberal friends! If the ANOINTED ONE has not closed the deal already and you have 9% undecide at this late stage it is NOT looking Good for the ANOINTED ONE!
UTICA, New York – The latest Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll of likely voters nationwide shows Democrat Barack Obama enjoys a small lead over Republican John McCain, with little change coming in the last day of a three-day tracking poll of the race.
With the Dow Jones Industrial Average taking more than a 1,000-point swing Friday and Congress adjourned until after Election Day, likely voters were little moved one way or the other, the poll shows. About 9% remain undecided with 24 days until the election.
The rolling telephone tracking poll, including a sample of 1,208 likely voters collected over the previous three 24-hour periods spanning four calendar days – approximately 400 per 24-hour period from Oct. 7-10, 2008 – shows Obama holding a lead now of 3.8 percentage points, virtually the same as his 4.2 percentage point lead yesterday

If Obama applied for a federal job, HE WOULD NOT PASS SECURITY CLEARANCE AND HIS APPLICATION WOULD BE REJECTED.

America is a country founded on the rule of law. Sarah Palin took an oath to unphold that rule of law stated clearly within the Alaska Constitution. She broke the trust of the people. She commited an ETHICS violation which is exactly what she says she would stop in Washington. Her credibility is now totally GONE. I can not believe the posts I read here turning a blind eye to a clear violation of a founding principle. This is more of the same Republican garbage that has led us into this ditch. ENOUGH !!!

the trooper maybe a vile person, AND
since/if he was/is such a vile person,
there should have been no problem with the palins having this man punished without THE PALINS-using the back door of her gov. office to do it.
poor judgement.
the big wigs of the rep. party, who have some intregrity and standards that they live by, were unsure about palin in the beginning, these good, hard working republican, who have made politics their business, are NOT going to sully their long build careers on Sarah Palin.
needless to say mccain and his bad judgement of picking palin (brilliant political stunt-which is now blowing up in his face) has the rep. party in a tight spot.
what about all of the republicans running for re-election at the local level, who have not abused the power of the office they hold, to do anything?
it is not fair.

Todd Palin's outsize role in the mess. Branchflower said it was out of his jurisdiction to pass judgment on the First Gentleman, but his report paints an extralegal role for Todd Palin that would have made the Hillary Clinton of 1992 blush. In the report, the head of Gov. Palin's security detail says that Todd spent about half of his time in the governor's office — not at a desk (he didn't have one), but at a long conference table on one side of the office, with his own phone to make and receive calls. It became a shadow office, the informal Department of Getting Mike Wooten Fired.
It was at that long table that Todd Palin first scheduled a meeting with Walt Monegan, days after his wife's administration began. He showed Monegan three huge binders of evidence against Wooten, including a picture of a dead moose that had been shot illegally. After Monegan came back saying that there was no new actionable information, Todd began a very visible campaign of stewing and fuming, trying to get access to personnel files, calling up and down the Public Safety org chart.
The report also raises the suggestion that the final incident that led to Monegan's firing was perhaps the most (unintentionally) hilarious part of the whole saga. In the run-up to Alaska's 2008 Police Memorial Day event, Monegan visited Palin in Anchorage and brought along an official portrait of a state trooper in uniform, saluting in front of the police memorial in Anchorage, for Palin to sign and present at the event. The trooper? Mike Wooten.
Palin signed the photo and didn't say anything, according to Monegan's testimony, but later cancelled her attendance at the event, sending Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell in her place. The head of her Anchorage office followed up with a call to Monegan berating him for his insensitivity. (Monegan swears he didn't know it was Monegan in the picture, and that he didn't even know what Wooten looked like.)
Shortly after that incident, Monegan's fate was cast. But even then, Palin's staffers were blithely adding more evidence to Troopergate. When Monegan's potential successor, Chuck Kopp, asked Bailey, the Palin staffer, why Monegan was being fired, he was told simply: "Todd is really upset with Monegan."
So what does this say about the possible Vice-President of the United States? Certainly not as much as her enemies would have hoped. She was only directly involved in a small bit of the pressure campaign — a meeting or two and a couple of emails. She can thank Monegan for not having her hands dirtier; it was he who told her to keep herself at "arm's length" from any Wooten conversations.
But even though she won't likely face any legal repercussions, the amateurism and cronyism of her brief administration hardly leaves Palin sitting pretty. Troopergate's final verdict may be even more damaging than a rebuke: her administration was, at least this regard, just as self-motivated as the Washington fat cats and lobbyists she hopes to unseat.

You do notice she was found not in violation of firing the guy only letting her husband be involved! If that was my brother in-law I would have shot him!
You do also notice that none of the mainstream media is saying ANYTHING in reference to Rezko talking to the FEDS, or Obama and ACORN! Wonder how it is ok for OBAMA to forget to tell the FEC about $800,000.00 he gave to ACORN from his funds and pushed it off as a clerical error!
Rezko / Ayers / Rev. Wright / Farrakhan / ACORN and the list keeps growing

I just don't see it. Anyone with half a brain can see that this trooper was a vile person. He physically abused his own and drank beer in his squad car. Those are the only two things I can remember, and the list went on. He'd been reprimanded so many times for serious infractions-he should have been fired LONG ago. She did the people of Alaska a favor.
