A Nostalgic Moment for Obama in Jaxville
November 03, 2008 12:35 PM
JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA -- Standing in Veterans' Memorial Arena this morning, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., recalled for the crowd of roughly 9,000 a moment from seven weeks ago in this very same place.
In the middle of a riff on how Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., "just doesn't get it,” Obama said, "remember what he said when he was here in Jacksonville on September 15th?
"That day more than 5,000 jobs were lost and more than 7,000 homes were foreclosed on. The day before, former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan said we were in a 'once in a century' crisis. And yet, despite our economic crisis, John McCain actually came here, to Veterans' Memorial Arena, and repeated something he's said at least 16 times on this campaign. He said - and I quote - 'the fundamentals of our economy are strong.'...
"Florida you and I know that not only was John McCain fundamentally wrong,...the fact that he's out of touch, this out of touch on-your-own economic philosophy that says you should give $700,000 tax cuts to the average Fortune 500 CEO, $300 billion to the same Wall Street banks that got us into this mess. A philosophy that says we shouldn't give a penny of relief to more than 100 million middle-class Americans. It's a philosophy that will end when I am President of the United States of America."
The day McCain made that remark, September 15, McCain led Obama 47-46 in the Gallup Daily Tracking poll. Today Obama leads 52-41.
A September 9 Quinnipiac poll of Florida voters had McCain leading 50-43. Today's Quinnipiac poll has Obama up 47-45.
On September 7, an ABC News/Washington Post poll indicated that Obama only had a 5-point lead over McCain on the question of whom voters most trust to handle the economy, 47-42.
Just two weeks later, September 22, Obama led by 14 points in that same poll -- 53-39. Today in the ABC News/Washington Post poll that number stands at about the same, Obama ahead, 54-40
On September 22, asked in the ABC News/Washington Post poll who you think better understands the economic problems people in this country are having, voters chose Obama overwhelmingly -- by 24 points, 57-33. The number today is basically the same, 57-38.
Now of course that one moment in and of itself didn't cause this shift in dynamics. But the Obama campaign strongly believes that it played a significant part.

I've never understood this so-called $700K tax cut for the average Fortune 500 CEO. Where does that figure come from? To the best of my knowledge, McCain has never proposed doing anything on personal income taxes other than keeping the current rates in effect. Where does the $700K come from? How is it calculated? Has any member of the press ever asked Sen. Obama to defend this figure? Did he just pull it out of his ass, or is there some sort of data to support his contention? I read pretty extensively, and somehow I have missed this being discussed anywhere. I'd appreciate any information anyone can provide.

Madashell in VA you said: "No, Brad you are WRONG. It's wrong for anyone who has ONLY LISTENED TO THE SOUND BYTES of Rev. Wright's sermons to make any judgement about him. Unless you have listened to his sermons in their entirity"
Do I have the right to judge others?
Yes, if that person calls themself a Christian and much more so if the person calls himself a Reverend of any Christian church. It is a leap of supposition for you to assume what I have or have not listened to.
Lets look at objective facts we have about Rev Wright: he has made statements that are bigoted, prideful, arrogant and blasphemous. I assert the Rev Wright has LIED (the only way thats not correct is if he is deranged and incoherent). Biblically, all lies come from Satan. And biblically we Christians are to be humble and there is a level of decorum to be maintained in any church that claims to be Christ centered. Violating this means Rev Wright rejects the authority of Christ and curses Christs standing.
Rev Wrights church has given a lifetime acheivement award to the infamous Luis Farrakhan, president of the nation of Islam. Do you NOT have a problem with a so called Christian church giving an honorable award to a bigoted racist pig such as Farrakhan? who said "the white man is the descendent of the Devil"? And in the week of Sept 11, 2001 said he and the nation of Islam stand with the Taliban as one brotherhood, one people and the Taliban are great warriors against the evil United States... If you didnt know, the Taliban claim to be the purest form of Islam. And then there is Father Flager? (sp) who is a textbook example of an apostate, he also endorses Farrakhan as a great leader.
Christians are required to shred the lies of false teachings, Islam itself is a false teaching and exists on the earth as a disease to mankind, if Obama was a Christian? which there is no evidence Ive seen that he is, if Obama was, he would defend the bible and defend Christ and speak the truth about everything including that the teaching of Islam is Satanic, (since from a bible perspective this is an absolute).
So if you want to say you like Rev Wright? thats your choice, but Wright, if he was part of the Christian church should be cast out as a heretic and false teacher (since by this point he has been confronted about his false teaching and not repented).
Sen. Trent Lott? excuse me, but do you even know who this is? People hate Tom DeLay mostly because they hate God and hate what DeLay represents with his Christian faith, especially when it comes to abortion (abortion is the Satanic ritual gruesome murder of children newly born or unborn). But Trent Lott is mild mannered and was argueably too nice in the Senate, I suspect youre thinking of someone else.
What did I do for the community? thats such a canned and presumptive statement, I did something and was not blogging all day, note the post times.

I don’t know about other people, but I haven’t run across any interviews with economists on what McCain said. But these are two articles that discuss that he was correct: “No, Really, the Fundamentals of the Economy Are Strong,” (NY Times) and “The Economy Really Is Fundamentally Strong,” (Time). And the economy is forecasted to improve in late spring. If that Obama had had to talk about the strengths and weaknesses in our economy, and whether or not there was, long-term, a strong foundation, I wonder what he would have said.
And if the media had fairly covered the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac crisis, all of the coverage would also have included these angles: “Who Caused the Economic Crisis?” (Factcheck), “Fannie Mae and the Vast Bipartisan Conspiracy,” (Slate), “How Washington Failed to Rein In Fannie, Freddie” (Washington Post),
“Dodd and Frank, step down,” (Providence Journal), “If Not Now, When? (Hartford Courant), and “Senator Dodd’s Notion of Courtesy,” the last two of which discuss how Sen. Dodd has failed as promised to release documents related to loans he got from Countrywide, which was involved in the sub-prime mess. On the whole, the media has failed to inform the public on some parties who were involved in and responsible for this crisis.

To any of you and to all of you who want to judge Obama by what Wright said. African-American has dealt with this kind of belittling all our lives and will continue to do so until the Good Lord prickle you all HEARTS. Wright was speaking for themself and he is not running for president, ok , we agree with the rest of the world , that the man is an idiot, get over it ,because if Mccain get to be president we will have a problem bigger than Wright in the white house, there will be TWO DEMONIZE families in charge. And may GOD have mercy on us ALL!!!

No, Brad you are WRONG. It's wrong for anyone who has ONLY LISTENED TO THE SOUND BYTES of Rev. Wright's sermons to make any judgement about him. Unless you have listened to his sermons in their entirity, you know nothing. I listened to his entire sermons as well as saw him with Bill Moyers on NPR and he was terrific. Rev. Wright not only served his country [America] as a Marine who was highly decorated, but he has also served his community and built his very small church to a large church by his thought-provoking sermons. I have a feeling that most of those who now judge or rag all over him have never done even a tenth of what J. Wright has done in his lifetime for his country or his church. Furthermore, Rev. Wright has a superior intellect, is witty and quite charming, but unfortunately most people will not know that because they refuse to give him a moment of their time as the sound bytes were just too gripping for them to handle. This was WRONG in every concept of the word!
Being as I live in VA, today I awoke to see a new ad being run on tv by the GOP which brings out the J. Wright 'sound bytes' to prove that Obama is radical. Well, that is just NOT going to work now or ever. We have made up our minds and I personally find nothing offensive about Rev. Wright, and as a matter of fact, find that he has been very much maligned by all who think they have the right to judge him. They have treated Obama and Rev. Wright terribly.
As for Trent Lott, he is the most disgusting and reprehensible man in the senate and having to resign couldn't have happened to a more deserving man. Between Lott, DeLay, Gingrich, Stevens and a few others, I have been thrilled to see them have to go. We don't need these crooks in our public offices.
BTW, you were NOT present at any function for Obama, so until you are or at least a member of his inner circle whom he would confide in, I suspect you ought to look for FACTS [items that leave NO doubt for question] rather than ramble on about things you know nothing of. And tell me please, what good deeds have you done for your country or community today? Besides spreading rumors in blogs, I have a funny feeling, you have done nothing.

Factcheck
Does anyone bother to check out facts or just depend on the last email they got for their information?

Blip you said: "However, if you listen to a lot of Republican propaganda about "socialism" and "communism" and "Joe the Plumber"-- I can totally understand why you would be scared of Democrats. Unfortunately, the propoganda is a bunch of hogwash"
NO, youre wrong. The proof is in Obama's own books and in the fact he attended the Rev Wright church 20 years, these 2 are solid proof and the speculation goes out from there, and then the leftwing media will NOT ask these questions.
Remember Sen. Trent Lott (R) ?
he said at a private birthday party for another senator that senator would have made a great president. the leftwing media went into overdrive saying the now late senator supported segregation back in the 1940s, ergo a total racist pig and Trent Lott said positive comments about him! Lott had to step down from his post in the Senate as leader after weeks of continual bashing by the left over racism.
Yet Obama's church is millions of times more actively racist and the leftwing media stands silently and nods, where they went ballistic over Trent Lott one of, or perhaps the most unfair political lynching in US history.
Bill Ayers who is solidly linked to Obama? the proof HE is a Marxist is indisputable
Now you lefties may be socialist and be happy with communism and Marxism but tell the truth, dont deny what you really believe, you know Obama is a closeted socialist, Bill Ayers recently said he is an anarchist and Marxist to this day.
Will Bill Ayers get a high visibility post in some (God forbid) Obama cabinet? no, probably not. But the past interaction is there, its proven, if we learned anything from years (decades) of UFO chasing and chasing stories of UFO abductions? its that you follow the story until it ends, does it end with rumor babbling from some wacko? or does it end with legitimate links and proof to events in history?
Obama's friends Bill Ayers and his wife dedicated their anarchist book to the man who assasinated Robert Kennedy. Its in the book in a list of dedication names. Thats as extreme anti American radical far left violent psychotic murderer as it gets, and thats one of Bill Ayers hero's, and Bill Ayers hosted Obama's launching of his political career which Obama denied at the debates with the totally guilty and dishonest body language.
Let Obama take a lie detector test about it? aint gonna happen. Let the media make that into a 24/7 news story until he admits the truth? aint gonna happen.
I find the practice of believing in unfounded rumor to be disgusting, anyone who floats lies about Obama should be called a liar. But Im satisfied there is enough evidence in the overall theme of the claims against Obama and his ties to radicals, to say there is no way Obama could or should be qualified to be President, and the media has disgraced journalism by using their power to hide facts American voters need to know about Obama.
That means voters have to dig and find the facts themselves

What a punk, daring to question "the one"! He wouldn't pull that garbage once Obama's National Security Force is up and running, I'll tell you that much.

Republicans are quite happy to get by on other people's money.
That's why they work in the banking and finance sector.
You push around other people's money for a fee. You use that fee to buy stocks, which surge in value every time you put an American out of work and hire someone in a third world sweatshop.
If you ask me... the middle class do plenty of hard work. Yet all I hear from Republicans is how they whine too much. And how their whining will scare rich people. And how if they keep scaring rich people, they will be punished.
It's sad that so many think America is just about money.

Riley...
You picked a bad time to quit the Democratic Party.
I was a Republican until I started paying close attention.
And if you look at the history of Democratic policy, their approach to taxes has been much more conservative under Clinton... and they will be about the same under Obama.
If you were going to switch parties based on taxation and social services, you should have done that years ago. Because their philosophy is really quite a bit more fiscally conservative than it used to be.
However, if you listen to a lot of Republican propaganda about "socialism" and "communism" and "Joe the Plumber"-- I can totally understand why you would be scared of Democrats. Unfortunately, the propoganda is a bunch of hogwash.

As I mentioned earlier... The anti-Obama coal smear would be debunked, and it has been debunked.
The quotes are entirely taken out of context. There is no secret plan to bankrupt the coal industry. In fact, Obama's cap and trade plan is remarkably similar to the one put forward by McCain.
Second smear, Obama gave McCain the middle finger. He scratches his face momentarily, and for a brief second uses his index finger before switching to his middle finger. It is not directed at anybody. It is a video clip of a guy scratching his face, like billions of people do every day.
My only question is this? What's the next baseless smear going to be?
Posted by: Blip | Nov 3, 2008 2:16:03 PM
I've been a Democrat all of my life but not anymore.
I want no part of the new Democratic party led by Obama.
As someone said--this is not my father's Democratic Party.
It's no longer "ask what you can do for your country"--it is what will it do for me.
obama is creating a generation that will sit back and let the gov't and those who make over $150K take care of them.

Polls and the lead?
abc and the other networks are in the box for Obama. The biased pro Obama coverage is SO BAD in 2008 that it will lead to changes in the future.
Knowing that the mainstream media is doing all they can do to elect Obama means your vote is taken away, its stolen. You dont have the sense to vote right, the mainstream media is deciding for you, for the greater good. By claiming to be unbiased, the media is feeding American voters a hard partisan biased leftwing democrat pro Obama stream of misinformation, stealing your vote.
If they were fair? they would show both sides and let you choose. they want Obama to win SO BAD they are telling you they are unbiased but are hard biased for Obama.
Another thing, since they are working to steal votes and mislead voters, they are trying to say the McCain side is losing by double digits so dont even bother to vote, then saying to the Obama folks, hurry and vote early, vote as many times as you can get away with!
Its as if the news companies are lying then saying its okay because its 1st amendment free speech, and lying is protected free speech, even under oath or even when claiming to be unbiased its okay to lie and be biased.
Obama is tied to radical extremists, really, why does the left not understand?
You on the left may want your democrat candidate in power, its probably going to happen in the future, but NOT Obama!
Many of us could have settled with Hillary because we know she was there and we know what she is about, so it will be like the 1990s probably. I want McCain to win but with Hillary it wouldnt be such a scare on the national security side.
Obama said just after 9/11 that if the political climate got negative he would stand with the Muslims! its in one of his books, why hasnt the mainstream media asked him about that comment??
Hillary I could have tolerated, Obama? not a chance. vote McCain for 2008, democrats pick someone better next time.
