American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee Asks Rahm to Repudiate His Dad's Comments
November 13, 2008 11:39 AM
Upon hearing of his son's new gig, the father of incoming White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was quoted in the Israeli newspaper Ma'Ariv, saying, “Obviously, he’ll influence the president to be pro-Israel. Why wouldn’t he? What is he, an Arab? He’s not going to be mopping floors at the White House.”
This has prompted a letter from American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee heads Kareem Shora and former Rep. Mary Rose Oakar, D-Ohio, to the junior Mr. Emanuel, congratulating him and President-elect Obama, saying they are "deeply disappointed by comments made by your father, Mr. Benjamin Emanuel."
The ADC, they write, "views this characterization of an Arab as an unacceptable smear. One can readily imagine the justifiable outcry if someone made a similar remark about African-Americans, Jews, or Hispanics, concerning cleaning the floors of the White House. Do the normal standards of decency and civility not apply when talking about Arabs? ADC asks you to disavow and repudiate these remarks publicly. We sincerely hope you will distance yourself from any demeaning characterization of any ethnic, religious, or racial group."
President-elect Obama is cc'ed on the letter.

UPDATE: A spokeswoman for Emanuel writes: “Today, Rep. Emanuel called Mary Rose Oakar, president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and apologized on behalf of his family and agreed to meet with representatives of the Arab-American community at an appropriate time in the future."

I have to agree with the comment from MARC R. I think the mop comment was about his sons influence in the white house. Don't get me wrong im sure dad has no love for arabs but that's not what he was implying.

Although I do not think Rep Rahm Emaunel should be held responsible for his father's words, I disagree with the proposition that his father can say whatever he wants...when one makes a public statement to a news media outlet, one should be held accountable for what they say especially if it is racist and targets, denigrates, or smears an entire ethnic group who are also American. Arab-Americans are both highly respected in their professions and highly educated as well as are important contributors to our country. There should be no place for such statements spoken about any group.

Can you imagine if a Republican had uttered these words? It might have started WWIII. It was wrong and Rahm's Dad (not Rahm) should have apologized. This has nothing to do with Rahm or Obama.

With Obama's lack of experience and Emmanuel's penchant for outbursts, and Biden's gaffes, we're in for a LONG four years.
I'd be laughing if the Dow wasn't tanking. The Dow would never jump with Obama talking about increased taxes and all of that. Some folks might be swayed by slogans, but Wall Street isn't. When you're talking about people's wealth, bumpersticker ideas are not going to cut it.
He's in over his head. It's Jimmah, all over again.

Duh. The Dems are masters of PC behavior. They're the PC party. That being said, it's ridiculous to want an apology from the person not even involved in the statement. I so hate grievance theater. I thought Obama was going to eliminate all this bigotry!

Hey, who DOESN'T have a family member or parent that's, how should I say it, off their rocker?
I'm not too terrible worried about this and I think that this is only news to the bottom feeders out there (of which there are many I suppose). I'm glad Rahm's going to talk to them and has apologized but I certainly hope we won't be subjected to a string of "outcries" followed by dog & pony show public apologies every time his old man opens his prejudiced mouth. The guy is obviously a nasty individual with nasty opinions. He's shown the world where he wears his hat so let's put him back in obscurity where he and his toxic opinions belong! :D

This is awesome. I felt a great relief after election day.
No longer can libs pound and pound and pound the Republicans.
You have ALL the power now. We expect PERFECTION. Otherwise, you will be treated EXACTLY the same as you treated President Bush.
By the way, when will our tax cut checks be mailed out? It had better be soon. I want mine. Obama promised! Over and over again, he promised!
Ah yes, nothing to do but watch and complain and nitpick and call names.
Sweeeeet!

Obama should just make a blanket apology now for all the stupid things that dems or their friends or relatives say about protected groups. He can include in his apology a sop to the same sex marriage crowd by scolding blacks who voted for proposition 8 in California. Just imagine folks, 4 years of gasbaggery by the new vice-president will have Obama in permanent apologetic mode.

This just keeps getting better & better. The next four years will be filled with apologies & hand wringing over politically incorrect statements made by democrat apparatchiks. With the dems in charge of everything we can just sit back & watch them all twist slowly in the wind.

They had a right to ask for an apology. The quote was completely unacceptable. I'm surprized that they got an apology out of Emanuel and I'm glad. Maybe there is some hope for peace.

I don't dare get into politics. I would have to spend all my time denouncing and repudiating things my crazy kinfolk say.

As a Lebanese, I find his father's comments nothing short of despicable and racist. However, President-elect Obama has our trust and we trust his decision to delegate Rahm Emmanuel, who honorably called ADC and I agree, most of us have different views than our parents.
Wake up world, reject hatred and racism from wherever it comes from.

I did vote for Obama. Maybe not the one I am seeing now versus the candidate. I am a democrat so I would never vote for McCain no matter how left he goes. I did not vote for Bush either. I also worked the polls for Obama and my senator. So go to hell. Obama should say something about the market as Bush is a lame duck.

Obama is not President yet. Stop blaming him for anything that goes on within the next 2 months. Bush doesn't seem to be doing too much. He's just willing to let this country go totally down the toilet. What a President he will be remembered as. A real shame!
