Bill Clinton on Secretary of State Hillary

November 19, 2008 2:41 PM

The former president at the dedication of the RFK Bridge in New York City today, was asked what he thought would happen.

"Whatever they want," he said. "This is a deal between the President-elect and Hillary. You should talk to them."

Remember when political experts at Time, Newsweek, National Review and others wrote that Obama would be forced by conservative & moderate Democrats and Republicans in congress to move to the "center" rather than embrace the "far left". Well it's happening. In today's LA Times an interesting headline: "Antiwar groups fear Obama may create a hawkish Cabinet".

Here are some examples:

1. Obama has already backed off his campaign rhetoric about withdrawing troops within 16 months of being elected. Now he's said he will " meet with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and my national security apparatus* and we will start executing a plan that draws down our troops". No surprise here. The Iraqi government and the US have been negotiating a pact to withdraw US troops from Iraq for several months.
2. *Hillary Clinton is likely to be appointed as Sec'y of State. She's a born again hawk who voted for the invasion of Iraq and never really backed off her support of the war during her campaign for President.
3. Retain Defense Secretary William Gates* (a Bush appointee), also a hawk.
4. Also on the short list for a cabinet post, Sen. John Kerry, a hawk who voted for the war.
5. Sen. Richard Lugar, a Republican, a hawk who voted for the war is on the short list for a cabinet post.

Like everyone knows, on the campaign trail, the candidates say whatever will get them elected, but once elected the realities of Washington and the need to work with both sides of the aisle become part of the harsh realities facing any new president.

Political experts have long discussed the truly conservative nature of the American people. Everyone, regardless of party affiliation, wants a secure US free from terrorist threats or attacks, any country unfriendly to America to not have nuclear capability and everyone wants lower taxes, which makes it very difficult to pass sweeping measures that come with high costs such as universal healthcare and immigration reform.
We are in troubling times, but observing how are new commander-in-chief and his cabinet respond to the issues facing our nation will be very exciting. Stay tuned ....

The MSM is creating the drama. All parties involved have had NO COMMENT. Bill is right, it's between Obama and Hillary. How about waiting until something concrete comes from it instead of creating a drama where there is NONE!

Dow drops below 8,000 for the first time since 2003
===================

Heeeeeeelp, Hillary. It's S.O.S. time. It's economic S.O.S. We need you.

Had they listened to you one year ago, not to give the $300 billion away and used to target banks and mortgages, the Dow would still be above 14000.

Help, Hillary!

I like others who have posted don't understand. You say clinton is the drama you reporters are the drama. What did you want President Clinton to say?

Posted by: rachel | Nov 19, 2008 4:10:02 PM

Go Bill! Go Hillary. If Obama don't pick Hillary than it is Bobby Jindal 2012.

It's pretty clear that Hillary Clinton hasn't decided if she's going to take the position yet, and it's no wonder. If she DOES the take the SOS, the job lasts only 8 at most. She'll be 69 at the end of it. If she stays in the Senate, she could continue to work as a Senator for another 10 years or so, depending on her health, AND by then, she will most likely have the charimanship of a powerful Senate committee. ON the other hand, it's obvious that she's well-known around the world, and she would probably have a positive influence.

We want the Clintons. The stock market dropped another 400 points.... Wwwooo.....

This bonehead brought no confidence to the market, tanking almost 30% since his election.

S.O.S., Please, please take the job, Hillary. Only the Clintons can save us from this economy. Even as S.O.S., it is still a call you can answer to save the economy.

Barack and I both think Hillary would be an excellent SOS. This would keep her mouth shut and make her too busy to run for president. Good choice, Barack!

Of course Bill will comply and Hillary will take the job!

This is really another Clinton presidency. Obama is totally inexperienced but he is choosing the people who can help him with his training wheels! :)

Hillary will be an excellent Secretary of State!

And, by the way, Obama is white except for that little bit of black pigment. he was raised white, schooled white and thinks white.

Why do you think JJ cried?

Some advice for ABC and their political reporting team. There are two senate races still undecided which I would like to read about and get information on. Instead of wasting your time and my time on this type of Bill Clinton garbage, do some real reporting and investigating into the two senate races that have yet to be decided.

I usually like to add my two cents to jakes articles,
but all the post just said it for me.

this is just great, and so much fun,
and beginning to worry me.
i voted for obama because hillary said he would be good, mccain and palin were no option, and i wanted to be part of the historic event.
never did i think that obama would be hiring people who had worked for the clinton'
i thought for sure, with his new face, he had a lot of new faces waiting in the wings-to take us not just away for
bush "His Dumminess"-but actually in a whole new direction. and that obama really had some NEW ideas about how Washington should be run.
it seems his ship has run aground before it could get launched.
In light of all of this
Sen. Clinton should stay in the senate.
bill should continue his work
and obama needs to move on from the clinton's

he is going to seem like he really can't do the job without them.

obama leave the clinton' alone.

well, i put half a cent in.

Is that an emergency call?

I agree: WHAT'S THE POINT OF THIS BLOG?

Isn't there anything else you can write about?

And why should the media be talking to Bill about this?? This reminds me of what George (from ABC) asked: What would Michelle Obama think about Hillary becoming SoS? Who cares what Bill or Michelle has to say??

This is between Obama and Hillary!

Posted by: DMK | Nov 19, 2008 3:22:52 PM

Why is the media hounding Bill.

Leave him alone.

After his wife lost he did his best to get Obama elected and give the Dems the White House, so you guys should just lay off my Billy.

He has made the necessary concessions for his wife to become Obama's SoS (yep S.O.S).

The New Clinton administration is going to be GREAT, As naive and inexperienced as Obama is he needs someone in proxy to run this country
The Clintons are ready to serve and Obama is smart in filling his post and advisors with Clinton people...

Posted by: like it or not here I come | Nov 19, 2008 3:11:33 PM

What is the point of this brief blog? The former President stating the obvious.

Fascinating.
