Bishops Fire Warning Shot Across Bow of HHS Obama
November 12, 2008 1:48 PM
One day after President-elect Barack Obama first spoke with His Holiness the Pope, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement expressing concern about the direction the pending Obama administration will take the nation as far as abortion is concerned.
The statement states that the Church is completely united and resolute in defending “the unborn child from the moment of conception,” with a particular opposition to the proposed Freedom of Choice Act, which would strike down many abortion restrictions and which Obama supports.
The statement also states that the election was not a referendum on abortion, and suggests that aggressive abortion-rights polices "would alienate many Americans and be interpreted by many Catholics as an attack on the Church." The bishops also expressed a desire to work with the administration on immigration reform, health care reform, education, religious freedom, and working for peace.
"Any one of us here would consider it a privilege to die tomorrow -- die tomorrow! -- to bring about the end of abortion," Auxiliary Bishop Robert Hermann of St. Louis said during a press conference at the Bishops’ conference in Baltimore.
Bishop Joseph Martino said his fellow bishops should be more outspoken in condemning public officials who are both Catholic and "stridently anti-life."
Martino is bishop in Scranton, Pa., which –- if you haven’t heard –- is where Vice President-elect Joe Biden spent his childhood years.
"I cannot have the vice president coming to Scranton and saying he learned his values there when those values are utterly against those of the Catholic Church," Martino said.
Yesterday, Obama held his first telephone conversation with Pope Benedict XVI. The Vatican described the chat as part of any "normal exchanges" between a new U.S. president and another world leader.
The same day at the Vatican, the Pope’s “health minister,” Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan of Mexico, re-articulated the church’s opposition to embryonic stem cell research, saying it "served no purpose" since adult stem cells are available for research. Obama has pledged to reverse the ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research.
Yesterday in Baltimore, the bishops also approved a new blessing for unborn children, the first specifically of its kind. By a vote of 223-1 they approved the Order for the Blessing of a Child in the Womb for use in the dioceses of the United States.

I'm not Catholic but I am glad that the Catholic Church is standing up for the rights of children. Society can only function well when it protects the rights of the vulnerable. There is nothing more vulnerable than a life in its earliest stages of progress.

We could solve a lot of problems such as poverty by putting people to death. Problem is, extermination is not an option... or rather, murder by any other name is a profoundly wicked sin.

It would make me listen more if the good folks who shout about being pro-life extended their feelings to protecting those fetuses in Iraq, Afghanistan and else where. Why are so many prolife people so adamantly pro-war? pro-death penalty, pro-guns??? BIZARRE.
Unfortunately I'm mostly stuck with the cynical belief that most pro fetus people are anti child. There are not organizations out there actively seeking out those poor women who seek abortions because they cannot afford another child - and offering financial help. When that happens I'll quit thinking that they are hypocrites.

Having trouble finding "seperation of church and state" in the US Constitution.
Maybe one of these experts on here can lend me their Constitution so I could read up.

i would like to be the first to congradulate president elect. BUT after reading all the posts tonite im just wondering what we are all thinking when we do post. we elected OBAMA. Let us sit in judgement on ourselves and ask forgiveness. After all it says in the bible to forgive and we will be forgiven. So lets go to our beds tonight and remember we all are accountable for all our words that come out of our mouths. i know im sounding holy art thou but the bible doesn't lye and we really need to remember that we WILL ANSWER TO OUR CREATOR WHEN WE ARE CALLED HOME. LOVE TO ALL.

time to seperate state and church. too many chiefs and not enought indians. churches already are exampt from taxes, vatican is a home built by gold and with never ending jihads (holy wars), church needs to do their thing and let president run the country. If we are all to respect one another and there;s many beliefs amongst the public, than the vetican needs to take it's place and respect that they aren't the only ones. Why aren't they helping the poor? why don't they have to disclose how much money thet take in. My grandparents left the church their fortune when they could have used money for charities or a home for the sick or abondoned children. I have faith there;s a higher power than us, but faith and government in my opinion don't mix. Bin laden is example of freak who tried to mix both and look where that got us. The church has been promoting repubs and now wants obama to listen up? come on. be own leaders and let the man deal with the presidency. Seperate church and state, please, or the church will lose members. deal with your own problems of the clergy malesting boys, yet you don't approve of gay marriages. you approve of gay affairs but not the marriages. people are no longer living in denial.

>>Consider what David says in Psalm 139:13-16: <<
Consider what the BIBLE says in Genesis 2:7, when God formed man: He “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and it was then that the man became a living being”.
So life according to the Bible does not begin at conception, et al, but only when the first breath is taken...IF you believe in the Bible.
I am a confirmed Catholic and now worship alone, sometimes in the Church..no longer at mass. I am pro- choice and voted for OBAMA! Yea!

I could not have thought of a more ruthless guise than to subvert the Church’s own problems behind a 30 year old debate and turn it into a lecture for the president elect. Why don’t you just threaten to beat him for being a sinner? That’s what my nun’s did in Catholic school. I don’t know what’s worse, abortion or chancing the odds that your children will be molested by those of the cloth. Those are innocent lives destroyed forever; children who are socially and emotionally dead forever. Dear Bishops, if I were you, I would focus your efforts on "taking care" (in a bad way) of those behind the cloak instead of blowing up clinics. This is the great paradox of your religion and political affiliation. You people and your followers will vote against your own interests (human life) and doctrine (less government) to sanction anathemas to those very beliefs…taking other lives and having government interfere with the most personal of individual decisions. Hypocrites! Find your nearest bridge and take advantage of its vertical dimensions. Whether you decide to cower as a living infection or take advantage of the bridge, you’re still going to hell!

I am so glad Obama is in. Jesus never ran for political office. HE never tried to make his advice law. He never went to Casear and told him what to do. Jesus never said abortion was a sin. Jesus never gave anyone authority or marching order to force anyone to carry a pregnancy to term against their will. Abortion is NOT a cause of Christ. fact. Jesus spoke of those causes he was concerned about. Jesus said divorce was a sin. How about we outlaw that?? where are catholic preists, evangelical ministers not trying to outlaw divorce FIRST???? becuase it's not easy? so what? It's Jesus' words. Hypocrits. Stop trying to legislate your own made up ideas of what Jesus cared about. Your religious views do not deserve to be laws of the land no more than a catholics no more than evangelicals no more than mormons no more than muslims. Stand down all of you. We do NOT make laws based on religious views. Abortion will remain legal. If it's against your religion, dont get one. The rest is between women and their personal relationship with God.

oh SHUT UP with the 'unborn' definition. they are not UNBORN they are UNDEVELOPED!!!! UNDEVELOPED!!!! If you 'birth' a fetus anytime before 27 weeks it does not survive. It's not "BIRTH" that is needs, it needs DEVELOPMENT! It's an UNDEVELOPED baby. UNDEVELOPED!!!!!! let's be accurate is nothing else, shall we????? Bishops want to force girls nad women to develope babies against their will. period.

President elect Barack Obama strikes me as a strong man with a strong mind and I do not think that he will allow a few men in dresses to "ruffle his feathers". The Catholic church need to focus on their mess(priest interfering with little boys) and leave Obama alone..why do big masculine looking men have to be walking around in dresses! something about that doesn't sit right with reality. Most Catholics don't study the Bible they depend on the priest for every thing..If Catholics study the history of the church and study the Bible they will run from that church so fast the so called demigod(Pope)would be amazed and he himself may leave. The headline should be "You priest leave little boys alone" not a headline threatening Barack Obama.

AbeLincoln.. Agreed. It is difficult to adopt here. Which is proof that our foster care system is NOT working. We need to put forth the effort and, god forbid, the funds to make it a functioning system that HELPS children find loving homes. One of the first things we can do is overturn any and all laws prohibiting certain people from adopting, like homosexuals and single people. I am a firm believer that every child should be a wanted child.
For some reason a lot people have this feeling that women who have abortions are either slutty or irresponsible.. which is so not the case. It's not a matter of class or intelligence. I get tired of hearing people preaching that zygotes are people too. Even if that zygote was conceived forcibly by rape or incest. I mean do people really think that these women WANT to end their pregnancies. Do they think that girls go out looking to get pregnant just to abort? I mean COME ON!!!
We are living in a world that has sooo much evil in it. We allow men to rape women and then walk free after a year in prison and 6mos. in a recovery center.
How many times in a week or a month do you read about women and young girls abandoning their babies? Or killing them? That is a better alternative? I mean pro lifer's preach about not aborting an unwanted baby but they're also the same one's not TEACHING sex ed. Not wanting contraceptives sold in schools... It's like if we pretend that it's not going to happen it won't.
WAKE UP! To quote Ani DiFranco- the pro lifer's "Keep pounding their fists on reality hoping it will break but I don't think there's one of them who leads a life free of mistakes."

"Just wanted to point out that the Freedom of Choice Act, that Obama says he will sign, will take away our rights as parents to even know if our daughters are having an abortion. Your 14-year-old could have this medical procedure and you'll never know."....if your child ever CHOSE to have an abortion without telling you, you have screwed up ROYALLY as a parent. I know too many kids who WERE abused by either a parent or a relative, an uncle, or a mother's boyfriend, and their parents woudl not be on their side. The incidences of child abuse in step-fathers is HUGE! Look it up. and very sadly, the mother often takes the side of the boyfriend. In a healthy household where your children trust you, this is not an issue. Of course they woudl coem to you if they are in trouble. IF you have done something that makes you think for a moment your child would NOT come to you, then maybe YOU need to address that. That's YOUR problem. Fix it.

The Catholic church is the biggest religious hoax ever perpetrated on mankind. Why don't you men in dresses clean your church before threatening Obama!

Dear Pro Choice not Pro Abortion at 9:05 PM: The problem with adoption is the agencies. This is why so many couples go over seas to adopt. Just look at the celebrates and see how many have done so. Abe Lincoln

>>Well when a religion tells me that their God loves me but if I don't worship their way I am going to Hades (don't want to get booted off) that to me isn't preaching love, that is preaching hate<<
AMEN. I am Catholic and am sick and tired of my priest telling me who I can vote for. The Catholic church needs to stick to religion, stay out of politics and worry more about their priests that have been molesting kids.
Am sick of pro-lifers blah-blahing about abortion. What about all the poor kids killed and maimed and lives lost because of "Shock & Awe" in Iraq??? Didn't hear one word at mass decrying THAT horror when it happened.
My Italian family no longer attend mass because of these things and I have also stopped going. The Catholic church no longer satisfies my need to worship God in peace. It has become a dictatorial dynasty.

The bisjop can tell me what to do with my body when he has a 9-pound baby by natural childbirth. Or changes a diaper. Or gets up in the night with a kid with colic. Ot takes in a kid who is on the streets with no where to go. Until that time - he has nothing to tell me at all.
And the same goes for the Dalai Lama. And the little boys the Mormons call elders. And the old business men they call Prophets.

There are 500,000 kids in foster care right now. If you're so worried about the right to life why not adopt or foster one of these kids who has already been given the gift of life but not love.

Yes, I agree. I think Jesus would be horrified if he returned to find the supposed head of his church living in palace splendor amongst the greatest treasury in the world, while millions in the world go hungry and suffer needlessly. The Pope does not follow in the shoes of the fisherman from Galilee, nor should his bishops dictate the will of the American People.
