Cabinet Thoughts

November 27, 2008 5:45 PM

Writing at Slate, Fred Kaplan likes the idea of PEBO keeping on Defense Secretary Robert Gates -- "the move is a stroke of brilliance—politically and substantively," Kaplan writes.

"In his nearly two years at the helm of the Pentagon," Kaplan writes, "Gates has delivered a series of speeches on the future direction of military policy. He has urged officers to recognize the shift in the face of warfare from the World War II legacy of titanic armored battles between comparably mighty foes to the modern reality of small shadow wars against terrorists and insurgents. More than that, he has called for systematic adjustments to this new reality: canceling weapons systems that aren't suited to these kinds of wars and building more weapons that are; reforming the promotion boards to reward and advance the creative officers who have proved most adept at this style of warfare; rethinking the roles and missions of the individual branches of the armed services; siphoning some of the military's missions, especially those dealing with "nation building," to civilian agencies."

In the New York Times, David Leonhardt takes a second look at NEC director-to-be Larry Summers, n noting that there "really is no precedent for Mr. Summers’s role. He is a former cabinet official who has also done well-received academic research on many of today’s pressing topics. Whatever his flaws, he has the kind of mind that the Obama administration will need. In the best case, Mr. Obama will encourage Mr. Summers to play the role of fearless truth teller. And Mr. Summers will be sure to surround himself with his own squad of truth tellers."

At the New Republic, Eli Lake wonders if Secretary of State nominee Hillary Clinton would clash over Israel with National Security Adviser Gen. Jim Jones (Ret.).

"In August, Israel's leading newspaper, Ha'aretz, reported that the draft report [of a study of Palestinian security forces, written by Jones] challenged Israel's conception of its security interests in the West Bank as being overly broad, and that the IDF in particular was too dismissive of the Palestinian security services," Lake notes. "The newspaper quoted one IDF officer as saying he expected the report would be 'very harsh, and make Israel look very bad.'..."

In a recent interview, "Jones said that the Palestinians should be granted increasing degrees of local sovereignty over the West Bank until an independent state is born--with an emphasis on giving the Palestinians experience with governance. On Sunday, Ha'aretz reported that Jones favors dispatching a NATO force to keep the peace in the interim. That's a plan that the Israeli government would likely fiercely resist on the grounds that the Jewish state's defense doctrine has always spurned the presence of foreign troops on its territory and that it could be a reprise of the disasters of the U.N. mission to Lebanon.

"Now, consider his potential nemesis, Hillary Clinton. ...since becoming senator, she's been a persistent critic of Palestinian media and schooling, an issue that has traditionally been swept under the rug by the State Department and a central argument the Israeli right has used to warn against the delusions of the Oslo process. Clinton has described the teaching of anti-Israel views in Palestinian textbooks as 'child abuse,' and held hearings on the topic in an effort to get the Bush administration to do more on the issue.

"By focusing on the underlying tenets of Palestinian culture, Senator Clinton has in a way made common cause with the Bush administration hawks. While General Jones wants to take steps now to empower Abbas and his Fatah party to take over a Palestinian state, Clinton is asking if even the Palestinian moderates are ready to govern."

Some interesting reading...

Ha, rumors about Chris Mathews from MSNBC to be nominated as head of FCC?????

Can't you believe that?

I wonder if Chris can control the tingling of his legs any time he gets closer to Obama!

jack sparrow;

while I sympathize with your premise of 'gettin' the pirate bad guys'....... exactly who is the 'international community who can restrict who is allowed out of those ports' ?

Why don't the companies themselves who own the ships supply their own 'security'....

Brief trip off-subject:

Let's talk about those pirates for a moment... I understand that it is difficult or impossible to find pirates in lawless and/or hostile countries.

Maybe it isn't possible to follow the ransom money.

However, pirates need boats. Boats are not invisible. We have satellites, armed drones, and jets and all the rest. Why can't or don't we just sink all of their boats?

Or blockade their boats.... if a country cannot or will not stop pirates from operating out of their ports, then the international community can restrict who is allowed out of those ports.

Anyway, that's my grand suggestion to the world. No boats for pirates.

I am picturing in my mind Obama and Hillary both getting together to break the ice by playing a friendly game of Risk ("the world domination board game").

I am also picturing them BOTH cheating like there was no tomorrow.
And bickering.... over who has the Middle East "territoty", but of course!

Cynical black democrat: too true, it's very entertaining watching alliances shift like sand. And listening to devotees say "that's what he meant all along, you just heard wrong because you don't liiiiike him, you hater!" And of course, say that everything is the fault of the GOP. Like the other side doesn't play the same game with different trigger-buttons.

It IS all a game, and people DO want to be duped and diverted.

McInsane: I will repeat what I have already said. Apparently you are not reading all of the leftist commentary in which people are saying they were duped. The Nation had an article with that very title. David Sirota at Open Left has been having daily panic attacks over the cabinet selections. Dissident Voice, The Progressive, Salon, and even Huffington Post hav all run: he's not changing and is not leftist articles. So, I applaud you for seeing reality, as I did. But you need to see the reality that others saw rather than dismissing it altogether.

And if you do not think leftists were saying he would be leftist, read Alternet, National Journal, Naral, MoveOn, Huffington, Daily Kos, etc. All of those blogs/websites portrayed Obama as a left/liberal, not as a centrist in the mold of Bill Clinton. IN fact, they railed against HRC on the grounds that she would be just another fake liberal like her hubby. Funny - that narrative completely changed when PUMAs threatened to boycott the party. Suddenly, the gospel said that Obama and Clinton are indistinguishable....

This has been very entertaining. I enjoy watching the social narratives going on. At the end of the day, it's all BS. All Obama and any other politician wants to do is keep their jobs and have power and influence....

I have said from the start that Obama was not a liberal he tends more to the center.

What I can not understand is the negative approach of the RNC. If the RNC doesn't watch itself it will become obsolete. Americans wants things to happen, we are in anticipation of a change from the Bush Administration, and a pragmatic approach to government. I see that in Obama.

While I do not agree with the left, they are easier to work with, and more accommodating then the right.

Obama has done more to be positive in the weeks since the election then Bush has done in 8 years. More power to him.

cynical black democrat,
The left (myself included) were never duped by Obama. Anyone paying attention knew that he was/is a centrist. I honestly don't know of anyone except republicans who expected him to lead as a liberal.
That doesn't mean that we on the left won't use the leverage from helping get Obama elected to demand he meet us on some issues.

Also, it's very likely that Susan Rice (a black woman) will be in obama's cabinet which blows your theory that Holder will be the only black cabinet pick.

I love how the right is trying to cause controversy where there is none.

volim - I'm not a Republican. And there is a huge difference between the "left" and "communists." Yes, I followed the election very closely. I was referring to the Democratic primaries when progressives cast Obama as much more progressive than Clinton. Some lefty sites, including Daily Kool-Aid would constantly say she is "more of the same." Translation: She's Bush-Lite. Even the Lord Obama himself conflated the Bush and Clinton administrations in his "bittergate" comments.

Apparently, the Clinton-era was not as bad as the left portrayed it -- at least not to their savior. But many of them have now dropped him. Apparently, you have not been reading progressive sites. Go look at the debates over Obama betraying the Left. In particular read Open Left, the Progressive, Salon, and Dissident Voice. Even MoveOn.Org, one of Obama's biggest cheerleaders, is now staging a silent protest to make sure that candidates remember who helped them get elected (their words, not mine). The protest is general, but really about Obama, according to sources.

"I surely hope Hillary turns the SoS offer down. If she goes in, she will be muzzled and her thoughts and beliefs will be overturned."

If Obama wanted to be more self-reinforcing on foreign policy, he would have chosen Richardson or Kerry. Fortunately, he's not placing himself within an agreeable bubble. Hillary Clinton muzzled? Maybe in a parallel universe that could happen.

Posted by: kat | Nov 27, 2008 8:55:48 PM

cynical black democrat- are you kidding? The ONLY people who ever claimed Obama was a far left, communist were the Republicans. The majority of the liberal left knew exactly who they were voting for and what they were getting. That probably is because they knew Obama's voting record and actually listened to the debates. Anyone who followed the election could have predicted every single one of Obama's cabinet picks. Not one has been a surprise, except maybe to the Republicans. The liberal left knew that Obama would be a progressive President who would govern from the center. The liberal left ( including Kos Kids) wanted Hagel, A REPUBLICAN, to be Sec of Defense or Gates to stay on. You Republicans are hysterical.

I surely hope Hillary turns the SoS offer down. If she goes in, she will be muzzled and her thoughts and beliefs will be overturned and she will be told what to do. She is most valuable in the Senate. She will be heard there.

Obama's cabinet is a reflects his own ideology. He totally duped the Left into thinking he was "one of them," when he is a centrist-to-right politician. This is what karma looks like. The Left was so sexist against Hillary Clinton. I said all along that freedom cannot come when it is based on sexism and false charges of racism. Well, guess what: I was right. Obama is going to run things exactly the way he wants to run them. And that means he will reward the corporate support he had. He will continue to nominate people who supported him or people connected to people who supported him. And he will nominate the "first black AG" but Holder will be the only higher-level black appointee. I love it. This is exactly what I thought would happen. A conservative/moderate man won over a gullible leftwing. LOL

It seems like Mr. Obama will continue to lie where possible - his cabinet will be full of hawks. He also may be a hawk talking as a sheep.
