Clinton for State? -- New Yorkers Weigh In
November 19, 2008 1:09 PM
ABC News' Matt Jaffe reports:
It remains to be seen if Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., will be tapped by President-elect Barack Obama to serve as his secretary of state, but a majority of her home state voters hope she gets the nation's top foreign policy gig.
In a new Marist poll, 55 percent of the state's electorate said they wanted Obama to tap Clinton for the State Department job, while 31 percent believe Clinton should stay at her current post in the Senate.
Clinton, who fought long and hard with Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination, traveled to Chicago last Thursday for a secret meeting at the President-elect's transition headquarters and she might be named to the post within the next week.
A whopping 72 percent of registered voters predicted Clinton would do an excellent or good job at State, compared to just 9 percent who forecasted she would do poorly. Among Democrats, the number of people predicting the Empire State lawmaker would do well jumped even higher, up to 86 percent.
Even among Republicans, nearly a majority were confident that Clinton would excel in such a role.
And what of one of the chief obstacles in naming Clinton to head the State Department -- her husband, former President Bill Clinton?
About one in five New Yorkers believe the country's 42nd president would hurt his wife were she to become the country's chief diplomat, but 46 percent said he would help her and 32 percent didn't think he would be any factor at all.
The former commander in chief's finances pertaining to his presidential library and charitable organizations provide one issue for the Obama team to overcome, as are his numerous speaking engagements, as reported here last night.
Should Obama select the Empire State senator to lead State, 43 percent of people said they would like to see New York Gov. David Paterson name the state's Attorney General Andrew Cuomo to replace her, only 1 percent more than those who said they were not sure about their preferences for her successor.

Hillary is my Senator and she has done an excellent job. I had the opportunity to meet and speak with her twice this passed year. She is very warm and friendly and has a excellent sense of humor. She is intelligent and hard working and no one works harder than her for our country. I will trust her own judgement to make the right decision regarding becoming our Secretary of State. If she chooses to be Secretary of State I will cheer her on and be very supportive and happy for her. If she stays our Senator I will feel very happy and fortunate to have her representing and taking care of New York State.

Don't do it Mrs. Clinton. You are first-tiered, not fourth.

I don't think Obama deserves help from either one Clintons. He should stay with his change not with the Clintons'.

Chuck Hagel is the best man for the position. He is a republican but he believes in Obama Doctrine and has the intellectual curiosity that is needed in this complex world. During the primaries Hillary and Obama differed on one single issue: foreign policy. Hillary should stay in the Senate and push for the health care reform. Obama will sign Kennedy-Hillary Health Care Act...that's the change we need.

Bob Murray of Center for Naval Analyses is being mentioned for the #2 spot at State.

bill clinton should not have to give up anything,
sen. clinton should stay in the senate
and run for president in 12,
and obama should find a sos from his own group of people.
he already has enough people who were associated with the clinton anyway.
time for obama to leave the clintons alone.
obama, let the clinton' go on with doing their thing,
obama, you do your thing.

New York is the Empire State, not the Liberty State.

She will not be SOS, Bill Clinton will not give up his speaking engagements and or his library.
Colin Powell would make a great SOS.
