Former IRI Chair Defends Khalidi
November 03, 2008 11:58 AM
R. Bruce McColm -- past president of the McCain-chaired International Republican Institute (IRI) when it first granted money to an organization co-founded by Rashid Khalidi -- e-mails Ken Silverstein at Harper's and pushes back against the attacks on Khalidi from Sen. McCain's campaign.
(More background on this controversy HERE, HERE and HERE.)
McColm writes:
"Rashid Khalidi was well known for his criticism of Yasir Arafat. He never was a spokesman for the PLO and was a professor at the Institute for Palestine Studies and a professor at American University in Beirut," McColm writes. "He was the founder of the Center for Palestine Research and Studies. I was President of IRI during 1993 through 1995. The Clinton Administration wanted the various NED-related institutes to begin working on the West Bank.
"All our proposals had to be approved at board meetings with John McCain in attendance and in agreement. John did think highly of these grants. IRI didn’t really want to work on the West Bank in any activities of political development. Two pro-Israel board members -- Dr. Jeane Kirkpatrick and then-Senator Connie Mack of Florida -- were skeptical of such an enterprise. IRI decided to fund the Center for Palestine Research and Studies because of its academic bent and the fact that it would conduct attitude surveys -- polls on socioeconomic attitudes on the West Bank.
"Press accounts have the first grant being given in 1993 -- I remember slightly later than that. Whether Khalidi actually did the research I do not know but we were aware of his reputation and his 'moderate' stance to the issues. McCain moved the approval of the first grant with the acceptance of Dr. Kirkpatrick and Senator Mack. Over time, the Center conducted over 30 polls for the IRI. My understanding was that grants extended far beyond my tenure to l998.
"It was always my understanding that Khalidi was directly involved in the research. We were impressed by the initial polls and analysis. So obviously IRI continued to believe in their work after I left. Ironically, it was Khalidi’s academic background and his known coolness to the PLO that attracted our interest. How strange to see the McCain campaign use Khalidi as a 'type of terrorist' with whom Obama hangs around."

R. Bruce McColm stated "Rashid Khalidi was well known for his criticism of Yasir Arafat. He never was a spokesman for the PLO" is a bald face lie!
McColm is a Well Known Promoter of CommunistS and Terrorists. He is a Mole that has wormed himself into key positions and has a secret agenda, along with the former PLO Spokesman(something McColm denies which Rashidi was) Khalid Rashidi.
How else can McColm explain his actions as an official of the IPC or The Iran Policy Committee which promotes the Iranian Communist MEK (MKO, PMOI, NCRI, Rajavi Cult, or Pol Pot of Iran) terrorists, the murders of American military officers, and Rockwell International employees?
Khalidi most certainly is a former spokesman for the PLO when it was listed as a Terrorist Organization, and his wife future Mona was also an official of the PLO. He and his wife Mona who lives in Chicago, head the AAN, an Arab organization that supports the PLO with Funds from various people and groups (Obama and Ayers provided them large amounts of money in the past from the Woods foundation) according to a former AAN employee.
Khalidi was quoted as telling the Sun Newspaper Khalidi that “Killing civilians is a war crime. It’s a violation of international law. They are not soldiers. They’re civilians, they’re unarmed. The ones who are armed, the ones who are soldiers, the ones who are in occupation, that's different. That's resistance.”
The Sun editorial argued that by failing to distinguish between Palestinian combatants and noncombatants, Khalidi implies that all Palestinians have this right to resist, which it argued was incorrect under international law.
McCone defending Khalidi amounts to nothing but a Mockery-as they are Both part of the same ilk!!

You would think that the McCain campaign would see these attacks aren't working. But then when you are inept as they are why would you.

Just shows that McCain is now saying whatever his staff gives him to say. Which doesn't say much for his judgment in choosing those people.

So many of you GD people blame the congress for everything, but you fail to remember that the congress is unable to pass any legislature since they have no majority and are held back by the Republicans. Once this election is over and if they acquire the Dem seats required to block the Pugs, then they will be able to get things done. If they don't, then everyone will have a 'legitimate right' to slam them hard and we will. Until then, there's not much they can do.

Well what else did you really expect from McCain regarding Khalidi since everything about his campaign has been either a LIE, SMEAR, OR DISJOINTED VILE NONSENSE? Anything that he could accuse Obama of - even if he had to make things up - McCain would LIE and SMEAR thinking he's gaining points in the polls. He forgets so easily that the internet is here [since he doesn't know how to use one it would be easy for him to forget] and we can check out everything he says in a moments time. Since he is incapable of leading his campaign, how can anyone truly expect him to LEAD OUR COUNTRY out of its current quagmire? McCain and Palin have NEVER stated one policy, plan or program that their administration would put forth for the American public and here it is the day before the election. I learned a long time ago not to hold my breath waiting for them to say anything constructive especially after seeing Palin's interviews with Gibson and Couric. H*ll she can't even construct a concise sentence, so how would she ever be able to construct a plan for the country? I suspect in Alaska, she gets the "suckers" in her government to do all the hard work while she takes all the credit. And McCain is just like her; he hasn't worked in 26 years otherwise he would NOT have allowed our financial industry to continue with NO REGULATIONS in place to protect consumers and we wouldn't be in this financial mess. [And he now wants us to believe that he has changed his core beliefs to think he has become a REGULATOR. Yeah, right!]
Oh what a web we weave when first we try to deceive! That's appropo for McCain and Palin. Once a LIAR, always a LIAR! That also fits for them!
I am so sick of the GOP and all the wrong, mean and vile LIES they stand for and have stood for over the past 8 years. I can't understand how any citizen, no matter in which state they live, could actually vote for another Republican LIAR to become POTUS. It's simply mind boggling!] I guess some people don't learn at the same fast pace as others!

Mary OK
why not just make the official state religion Catholicism ? ... especially since it's 'been around for centuries'.... why even bother with the Bill of Rights and the Constitution when you can have church doctrine.... burn em' and dismember 'em if they don't believe......

It's not so strang that McCain used Khalidi as an attack point, because McCain's whole campaign has been one strange trip.
This guy has zig zagged so much on the campaign trail the Straight Talk Express should have been pulled over long ago for reckless driving.

How many good names have been smeared on McCain's quest for the White House, especially Obama's.

blue: You forgot just one little detail: The Democratic Congess approval rating is even lower.

George W. Bush now holds the record of the lowest approval rating ever recorded for a sitting U.S. President. Additionally, he also holds the record for highest disapproval rating ........
Congratulations 'W'.......... don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Schadenfreude:
.. is the gleeful joy you experience when someone else gets his just desserts or has his comeuppance.
I believe I am experiencing this, lil bit guilty about it....... but I am enjoying seeing republicans SQUIRMING and flailing about like chickenhawks without heads........

what is it about you Republicans that there is always a tape 'somewhere' that has 'something'
to 'expose' Obama..... your the 'only ones' in the world with 'secret info' direct from right wing fringe blogs... what a joke!
if your looking for things to 'expose', try the last 8 years of Bush & Cheney..... more than enough work to keep yourselves busy for a long while.

"...Jesse Jackson: Under Obama, 'decades of putting Israel's interests first' would end." According to Jackson, the "Zionists who have controlled American policy for decades" will lose clout."
Don't believe these quotes are real? Do a web search then.

On the campaign trail this fall, Senator Obama has said, "I am a big proponent of clean-coal technology and I want us to move rapidly in developing those sequestration technologies that are required. A huge percentage of our electricity is generated by coal. What we need to do though is to put clean coal technology on the fast track and that means money. It means investment in research."

I can see where Obama learned his behavior and mannerisms.
The arrogance and smugness. The mocking, lecturing, and holier than thou attitude.
Twenty years with Rev Wright and Father Pfleger.
Obama had to enjoy their company and ideals to hang around them for so long.

I hope Khalidi files a law suit against McCain - Palin for defamation of character, etc. Both are pretty despicable people that could care less about who they hurt!
To claim Khalidi is a terrorist when he is a well respected professor at Columbia University is stooping very low.

I want to know about the real anti-Americans, the AIP.
Why isn't the MSM interested in this?

It is nice to defend Khalidi. But it is a strawman.
There is a tape of Obama at a Khalidi event, reportedly attended by Khalidi's friend Bill Ayres, at which very anti-Semitic things were reportedly said.
Obama originally tried to say that Khalidi is merely a guy whose kids go to school at the Lab school. It's the same thing Axelrod said about Ayers, which turned out not to be true.
The tape the LA Times is hiding would be interesting because we'd see Obama's behavior, not Khalidi's.
Posted by: MayBee | Nov 3, 2008 12:28:05 PM
Right. And that has been the point of the people who are urging the LA Times to release the tape. Khalidi is only a side character in this story. It is what is said by the people at the dinner and Obamas' reaction. It's a safe bet Obama didn't display any political courage at this dinner. When has he ever. (See what Democatic Rep Jerrold Nadler has to say about Obama's lack of political courage in Jake's entry on that topic.)
