Former IRI Chair Defends Khalidi

November 03, 2008 11:58 AM

R. Bruce McColm -- past president of the McCain-chaired International Republican Institute (IRI) when it first granted money to an organization co-founded by Rashid Khalidi -- e-mails Ken Silverstein at Harper's and pushes back against the attacks on Khalidi from Sen. McCain's campaign.

(More background on this controversy HERE, HERE and HERE.)

McColm writes:

"Rashid Khalidi was well known for his criticism of Yasir Arafat. He never was a spokesman for the PLO and was a professor at the Institute for Palestine Studies and a professor at American University in Beirut," McColm writes. "He was the founder of the Center for Palestine Research and Studies. I was President of IRI during 1993 through 1995. The Clinton Administration wanted the various NED-related institutes to begin working on the West Bank.

"All our proposals had to be approved at board meetings with John McCain in attendance and in agreement. John did think highly of these grants. IRI didn’t really want to work on the West Bank in any activities of political development. Two pro-Israel board members -- Dr. Jeane Kirkpatrick and then-Senator Connie Mack of Florida -- were skeptical of such an enterprise. IRI decided to fund the Center for Palestine Research and Studies because of its academic bent and the fact that it would conduct attitude surveys -- polls on socioeconomic attitudes on the West Bank.

"Press accounts have the first grant being given in 1993 -- I remember slightly later than that. Whether Khalidi actually did the research I do not know but we were aware of his reputation and his 'moderate' stance to the issues. McCain moved the approval of the first grant with the acceptance of Dr. Kirkpatrick and Senator Mack. Over time, the Center conducted over 30 polls for the IRI. My understanding was that grants extended far beyond my tenure to l998.

"It was always my understanding that Khalidi was directly involved in the research. We were impressed by the initial polls and analysis. So obviously IRI continued to believe in their work after I left. Ironically, it was Khalidi’s academic background and his known coolness to the PLO that attracted our interest. How strange to see the McCain campaign use Khalidi as a 'type of terrorist' with whom Obama hangs around."

Rockychance...

You shouldn't speak on behalf of Jewish people. How can you say they are against Israel? To read the actions of American Jews through the biblical lense, as if to suggest they are betraying God and betraying Israel by supporting Obama, presumes an awful lot.

Thanks for reporting this.

It is just these sorts of 11th hour attacks that irk me.

The last few days have been filled with them.

The latest: Obama wants to bankrupt the coal industry.

Most people hear these things and do not have the time or energy to research them. The McCain people have their volume turned up to 11, so it is really hard to speak reasonably about these sorts of baseless attacks.

It is an effort to try to cheat their way towards a narrow victory.

My hope is that by now people are conditioned to expect bogus attacks during the days before an election... and that there will be a backlash.

Thanks for reporting this, Jake. This whole ginned-up story was another phony attempt to associate Obama with "terrorists." Since the William Ayers attempt had limited success, they decided to find an "A-Rab terrorist," nevermind that McCain's association with the well-respected Prof. Khalidi's was more substantial than Obama's.

It is obvious why so many responsible Republicans have come out against McCain-Palin even when they disagree with some of Obama's philosophy. They just can't support a disonest, hypocritical, morally- and intellectually-bankrupt ticket. It's a shame that not all of your commenters have the same high standards of these honest, principled Republicans.

The L.A tape? has nothing to do with the Obama campaign. You shouyld direct your comments to the LA Times and stop attempting to use it as a tool to attack Obama....that hasn't worked up to now or are you also ignoring ALL the polls regarding negative campaing message?

Too late on Nancy Pelosi being near the political process...she is there and has been for a while.
As for her remark on when life begins? That's a personal decision we all have to make and should NEVER allow anyone else to make it for us.

As a Republican? IF I were voting for McCain? I would be offended that the McCain campaign thought I, as a voter, was so stupid that I would not educate myself on the facts regarding their remarks.
I chose, as a Republican, to vote for Obama after the Palin pick so thank goodness I no longer have to fact check my candidate to see if he is lying to me.

Actually, a good reason for Catholics to shun the Democrats this year is Nancy Pelosi's Meet the Press Interview in Denver. Why she decided to describe the Catholic Church's position on when life begins as an open, debatable matter, is beyond me. The Denver archbishop had a statement about it read at Sundy mass before the program ended when aired on the east coast.

Anyone who misrepresents their own Church's centuries old position is either untrustworthy or a total dimwit. I don't want her anywhere near public policy.

Why can't we see the LA tape if all is peace, love and the American way?

Posted by: Barackula | Nov 3, 2008 12:44:40 PM

To paraphrase Tom Tole, the McCain campaign is nothing but a bridge of lies to nowhere. But this is the problem with the GOP in general. They are a problem bankrupt of idea. The entire McCain message can be summed up in one sentence: "Don't vote for that socialist, communist, fearsome black man." McCain has ZERO policies, ZERO solutions and ZERO ideas to get us out of the mess we are in except fear and smear and more of the same policies of his buddy Bush. What a sad, pathetic and dishonorable old man!

The American Jews who support Obama do not support Israel and Israel has a history of it's own people turning against their God and it seems the American Jews do not support Israel at all or they would not support Chairman Obama as he smoozes with the Iranians, Palestinian Hamas and Hezbollah-all who hate Israel, Obama will give to. I support Israel because I believe that God gave them that land and I do not care what American Jews say, they are wrong to support Obama and as he turns against Israel, all the world will see his true Muslim leaning self!

Fox Noise had quite a run with this story last week. They had one of their "reporters" in Khalidi's face telling him he is at the "center" of the American Presidential Campaign and needed to answer to his "association" with Obama! Leave it to Fox to try and make a mountain out of a molehill. They love the smear, fear, and slime. It's what they base their "news" on.

Personally, I am more interested in Ayers's presence at the dinner and what was actually said than the fact that Khalidi was the subject of the praise...

However, McCain's camp should likely not be attacking the relationship with Khalidi per se...frankly, determining the actual nature of Khalidi's relationship with the PLO and whether or not he tacitly or openly supports terror is confusing...there is not that much info out there.

Posted by: Wade | Nov 3, 2008 12:29:53 PM

It is nice to defend Khalidi. But it is a strawman.

There is a tape of Obama at a Khalidi event, reportedly attended by Khalidi's friend Bill Ayres, at which very anti-Semitic things were reportedly said.

Obama originally tried to say that Khalidi is merely a guy whose kids go to school at the Lab school. It's the same thing Axelrod said about Ayers, which turned out not to be true.

The tape the LA Times is hiding would be interesting because we'd see Obama's behavior, not Khalidi's.

COMRADE Pelosi and CHAIRMAN Obama will soon enough destroy Ohio, Penn, W. Virginia and Kentucky because they will shut down their coal industry. They beleive Al Gore's garbage about carbon emissions and are going to hike the devil out of Middle Class electric bills in the northeast. What is wrong with you Middleclass northerners who are so blinded by your hate of Bush that you will sell your country out to lightweight Bolsheviks like the good COMRADE Pelosi and CHAIRMAN Obama! You will not get heat assistantance and your electric bills will sky rocket as Obama destroys AMerica----thanks northeasterners for this H to come!

So, Tapper, care to report that Khalidi praised the PLO terrorist who planned and executed the operation to murder Israeli atheletes at the Olympics?
You are so in the tank for Obama that you need gills to breathe.
Go ahead, delete my comment as not being pro-Obama enough, you ABC guys are really showing the way for an Obama administration to pile on the totalitarian censorship he's already practicing whenever anyone who opposes Obama speaks.

Sarkozy is the French version of Bush. He wants to make France more the like the US and the French resent him for it.

The era of Bush/Rovian politics may very well be coming to a close...so diplomacy like Obama wants is going to be used more and more so the rest of the entire world better get used to it!

No more "Do everything we want first, then we'll think about talking to you."
