Gates a 'Done Deal'

November 25, 2008 2:43 PM

Martha Raddatz and Jake Tapper Report:

Sources tell ABC News that Defense Secretary Robert Gates will be staying on in the top Pentagon job, for at least the first year of the Obama administration. "It is a done deal," a source close to the process tells ABC News.

Gates, while a registered independent, has served numerous Republican administrations. President George W. Bush nominated Gates to replace the Donald Rumsfeld after the 2006 midterm elections, when the war in Iraq was spiraling out of control.

The former Eagle Scout is expected to be rolled out immediately after the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend as part of a larger national security team expected to include Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, as Secretary of State; Marine Gen. Jim Jones (Ret.) as National Security Adviser; Admiral Dennis Blair (Ret.) as Director of National Intelligence; and Dr. Susan Rice as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Gates was CIA Director for President George H.W. Bush in 1992, and gave the impression to some that he would stay on in that role if asked by incoming President Bill Clinton. Clinton did not keep him on, replacing him instead with Jim Woolsey.

barrack was talking out of his a$$ during the election and now that he got access to the same security briefing that the president received every morning, he realized what Bush had to deal with and essentially agreed with his action. Give barrack some credit for wising up a bit.

Candidate Obama said many times that it was "insanity" to being in the same people from past years to do the same things and expect a different result. As president, he has surrounded himself with an insiders club from the last 30 years, will continue Bush's polices in Iraq (that's why he's keeping Gates-don't kid yourself), will continue these outrageous bailouts, and threw out his own tax cut promise (hikes for the rich, cuts for 95% of us)in favor of keeping Bush's tax cuts in place. So far, charismatic and clever campaigner with no idea what to do now. Once the novelty wears off, Barack is finished.

Those of you who oppose putting competent people in high responsibility positions must have never run a business. The most important thing a chief executive can do is staff with the best people available that will see your agenda through. Which is a key point, just because these individuals served within other administrations doesn't mean that they will drive policy as such. Quite the contrary, I am absolutely confident that these individuals have distinguished themselves as independent thinkers but also as team players. Most of what I read here is nothing more than sour apples in my view and should be disguarded. Just to be clear, the selection of SOD Gates is by no stretch an acceptance of the Bush Iraq policy. I am certain that after 1/20 President Obama will instruct his commanders to prepare a plan for a phased withdrawal. SOS Clinton will meet regularly with the Iraqi government and its neighbors to create the correct political environment for a successful withdrawal. This has been the plan from day one and I see no indicators to the contrary.

Suck it up President Obama does not care about you. He only cares about his political career and what advances him in that career. You should have known he was going to be another Bush Crony when he voted for the bailout that Bush proposed. Congratulations 8 more years of Bush.

Sorry but if I were Gates I would have declined and left as soon as I could.

Sorry but I wouldn't want to be anywhere NEAR this guys Administration.

I suspect Gates won't be there for very long at all...and will leave of his own volition.

I don't understand why you Mcpalin cronies criticize president Obama for his way of bringing change. Gates is not gonna hold that position for ever. You lost the election, now get over it and prepare to lose again in 2012 especially if you make a mistake of having airhead as your nominee. You should be concerned for possibly loosing the next two concecutive elections because Obama will muscle up the democrat while you guys continue to crumble. I voted for Obama with great pride and i will get him re-elected again with pride, confidence and lots of money for him to continue his record breaking streak .

Well the new Obama Administration is looking like a blend of the past two administrations........Clinton and Bush

Obama has picked a Republican for his Secretary of Treasury who got started in the Reagan adminstration in 1988 and now Gates is a hold over at Department of Defense. Obama has plans to increase combat forces in Afghanistan so he probably needed Gates to manage our increased involvement in that war.

And of course most of the other appointments come from the Clinton administration.

Obama has picked REPUBLICANS for the two most important positions in his administration the Secretary of Treasury and the Secretary of Defense, imagine that! ....Republicans

Not sure how the liberal Democrats are liking this.

Especially the ones who hold tremendous hate in their hearts for Bush and Clinton.

Did McCain win the election? Correct me if I am wrong but was it not Barack Obama who claimed he was going "CHANGE" Washington? So let's see so far, PE Obama is not going to repeal the Bush tax cuts for the rich, and Bush's Defense Secretary is going to be President Obama's Defense Secretary.

Sounds a lot like the same.

I guess all you fools who voted for Obama actually voted for umm. . . let's see. . . BUSH!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!!

All US troops home in 16 months!

Remember that promise?

End the war.

Remember that promise?

HopenSame!

You elected Obama, you got McCain!

Posted by: drjohn | Nov 26, 2008 7:19:10 AM

I didn't vote for Obama, and now I wonder why. He is going to be a great leader. McCain on the otherhand is still a good Senator, but he'd never measure up to Obama's intellect. He probably would have picked Rumsfeld! LOL

"Hey Proteapal....Check the papers....election is over...you lost...maybe you should try getting over it now too. WE suffered 8 years under your heroes, so give Obama a try, will ya??"

Hey.. Obama is making me pretty happy.

I wanted to win in Iraq, and unlike you, I care much more about my country being successful than I do about which party runs the White house.

Gates is not, as people here are saying, an apolitical choice. Bush appointed him to replace Rumsfeld because Gates supported the surge. It may surprise you to learn that I wanted Rumsfeld (and Casey and Abizaid -- these are military leders in Iraq, I have to explain because as Obama supporters you are all supremely ignorant)fired because he was losing the war. I like Gates because he won the war.

Gates is opposed to timetables in troop withdrawals, so I have to assume Obama has caved on this idiotic point.

Since we have won the war, the whole troop withdrawal argument is moot. That means it doesn't matter.

Gates and Petraeus are going to win our wars in the Middle East and Obama is going to get out of their way and let them do it. And I am fine with that.

There isn't goung to be "Peace" though as some of you seem to think. there is actually going to be way more fighting.

I think it makes perfect sense to keep Secretary Gates in place; Obama is just being pragmatic. Gates has not been an ideologue the past two years. He has demonstrated competence, held subordinates accountable, and proven adept at operating in DC.

Most importantly of all, keeping a steady hand at DOD gives the new administration cover to focus on an ambitious domestic agenda.

If Obama is going to spend political capital, he will do so by expanding entitlement programs, especially Health Care, not by appeasing the idealists who see his election as the repudiation of every last second of the past 8 years.

I don't have a big problem with letting Gates stay but assuming that means the policy doesn't change is a bit shortsighted.

Posted by: dk | Nov 25, 2008 10:48:36 PM

Yup, more "change" from Barry & Co. egggggcellent! Whos next, Albright, Vince Fo.... errr froget that one,Henry Cisneros, cmon Barry dont let us down!!!!

threeriverscrossing,

First, the Democrats have controlled Congress since 2006, and if Bush or any other Republican lawmaker tried to change what Clinton did, the Democrats would have leaked info to the liberal media and as soon as you blinked the headlines would have read, "Republicans Preventing Poor Minorities From Obtaining Loans." I should know, I once was a Democrat!

National Security is priority #1! Therefore, a strong economy leads to a strong military, which leads to a strong national security. In other words, don't weaken the economy by taxing it!

Rich,

There is certainly plenty of blame to go around to each administration. However, this financial 9/11 or meltdown will be on the Bush administration watch of eight years.

Eight Bush years were plenty of time to correct previous administration errors. Such a tactic to blame seems lame. Whatever happened to the concept of accountability in the GOP party?
