Hillary, Sturm undt Drang
November 21, 2008 3:55 PM
Sources tell ABC News that on Wednesday night Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, told the Obama Transition Team that she was inclined to reject President-elect Obama's offer that she be the next Secretary of State. Among other reasons, the autonomy of life in the Senate, where she is her own master, appealed to her.
She was encouraged to refrain from making a final decision.
On Thursday, many people in Obama's world reached out to Clinton and convinced her to take the job.
By Thursday night, she had conveyed to President-elect Obama that she was interested in the job. In other words, she essentially accepted his offer.
Details are still being worked out, but everything is on track for Clinton's nomination for the job to be announced after Thanksgiving, along with other members of the Obama national security team.

this is a pay back,
obama knows hillary should be president.
he knows she is smarter than he is.
after he OUTSMARTED her in the campaign,
he still realized he needed sen.clinton
and this is the way he thanks her, draws her in, and gets a chance at her brain power

Let us paint the scenario of if Hilary takes the job. If everything goes well, Hilary solves the problem and Obama takes the credit of being a good president. If things go wrong, Hilary spoil it and nothing to do with Obama.

This explanation makes the most sense to me, Jake. Thanks.
I honestly don't think Hillary Clinton planned on getting a spot in the Obama administration.
And I for sure don't think she imagined STATE, so I think this was a shock to her.
Now that John Kerry apparently wanted it (a no-brainer) and was apparently turned down (a surprise), I think I've figured out how Clinton got this job:
After the primaries, Barack had everyone campaigning for him -- including Kerry, Richardson, Clinton and Clinton. What better way to figure out who can actually move people to action and to come together for a cause that they are not sure they even support (the very job of Sec of State) than to watch these candidates for his cabinet jobs in action.
I think the Clintons showed their greatest strength AFTER the primaries -- their loyalty to the cause of making America a better place for everyone, no matter who was on the team helping.
Who helped Barack Obama win the nomination -- Kerry, Richardson or Clinton?
After their endorsements of Obama, she still tied him in votes. They didn't help.
Obama appeared with Bill Clinton in Florida for a major -- and unbelievably eloquent -- speech about Hope.
The first person he sent to Florida was Hillary.
Hillary in Nevada.
Hillary in PA.
Hillary in OH.
Bill in New Hampshire, THREE straight appearances, all day long, on the Sunday before the election on Tuesday.
Where were Richardson and Kerry those last days?
Once she was out of the race, she never made a mistake in behalf of Obama or the Democratic ticket.
Kerry did.
(The Depends joke was disgustingly un-diplomatic).
And I have no idea where Richardson disappeared to... Hillary Clinton was the one sent to Texas to try to rally Hispanics (which she did).
I also think Obama just laid out the gauntlet to all of us. (Yes, msm and netroots, ALL of us).
I'm a Clinton supporter who still doesn't understand the cult appeal of Barack Obama.
Obama's supporters still don't understand the cult appeal of the Clintons.
Obama just told both groups to get over the cult worship and get to work repairing the damage that The Worst President Ever and The Worst Vice President Ever did to America.
Let's try, okay?
It's change everyone who is not a Loyal Bushie can believe in!
Democrats, Republicans, Independents, fiscal conservatives, defense conservatives, and maybe even a few evangelicals...
Let's rid ourselves of the stench that Bush-Cheney brought to America, by working together for the Common Good.
Congratulations to the Obama TEAM!
It's going to be a very bright new year this year for everyone in the entire world except the Bush and Cheney families.
Pop the corks!!!!!!

Well I can't see Hillary being an Obama stooge, or working very well in this submissive role as a diplomat. I thought Obama was going to be lead man in "restoring" America's image in the world which does not leave much room for a super-Secretary of State... he would do better hiring a real secretary.

Just wait until Hillary gets SOS. She can travel the world setting up profitable deals, and Cigar Bill can come in the back door and sign the contracts. As an add on, he might be able to sell them some shares in White Water Properties. People of the world beware, lock up your daughters, ole Cigar Bill is about.

Finally a president that can make smart decisions!

Who replaces her in the Senate? Robert Kennedy Jr? The younger Cuomo (sorry can't think of his first name)? It's going to interesting.

I wonder whats next successor line after vice president. May Hillary get a presidency that way?
Posted by: ah | Nov 22, 2008 1:06:41 AM
Personally, I would like her to stay in the Senate. Independence is good, being a part of O's rip off of a 3rd Clinton term where she does the work and he gets the credit...no good.

fooled no more
"Remember, the GOP is analyzing why they lost this year and will spend the next four years giving Obama as many migraines as they can. Remember Newt in the 90's and his constant needling of the Clinton Adminsitration?"
----------------
I'll bet you never counted on the fact that the GOP to be so stupid as to use Karl Rove's now well-known swift-boating of Democratic candidates again in 2008. Clearly, they did not learn from their mistakes. How many times do you get to use one strategy, get caught red-handed, and be dumb enough to use it again?
That's just how out-fo-lunch the GOP is. They are truly as clueless as people think they are. They live in a very insulated world, closing themselves off from the realities of most people. Living in such a small society can mean only one thing -- they know only about how they think, respect only what they think, and something think so much of themselves that they think they can sell their wealth, and their limited ideology to the masses.
Well, your comment about the fact that the GOP is mulling over why they lost the election -- from what I've seen on talk shows, they seem to think to become MORE ENTRENCHED in the ideology that got them kicked out of both houses of Congress and the White House. Does that sound as though they'll ultimately come to the right conclusion? Whatever they do, they are not plentiful enough to win elections by themselves. Furthermore, this is hardly the climate for smaller government. Even people who once espoused this idea, are now losing their jobs, their healthcare, and their wealth. NOW THEY WANT GOVERNMENTAL INTERVENTION. So, the only way the GOP will win in 20012 is if the Democrats fail in a big way, and even then the populace by vote for the Green or the Independent candidates, since the Democrats and the Republicans have had numerous chances to mess up.
And yes, I remember "Newt and his needling of the Clinton Administration." But YOU remember, Newt had to leave government because he was stepping out on his wife -- the same reason he voted to impeach Clinton. All of the GOP's stalwart moralists have fallen off their pedestals, and will never be welcome back!

We've seen so much of this back and forth over the past week, I won't believe anything until I hear him offer her the job publically.
Frankly, I'd love to see Hillary stay in the Senate and continue fighting for universal health care - 47 million people are counting on her to take this fight all the way to the finish line.
She's proven time and again over the years that she's our champion and that she doesn't give up easily. If anyone can FINALLY get results, it's Hillary.

Hillary won't run in 2012 no matter what happens with the Obama administration. Obama will run again and Hillary will run in 2016. I think this is her plan. And she will have more foreign policy experience being SOS than anyone else.
Posted by: annie | Nov 21, 2008 8:31:11 PM
Smart move on Obama's part--this way she can't run against him in 2012 without quitting the SOS job. If Obama fails to keep his approval rating over the next fours years or makes any major screw ups, Hillary has the ability to effectively use it against him in the primaries in 2012 and spoil his run for re-election. However, sidelining the Clintons may not solve Obama's re-election run if the Republicans manage to come up with a candidate that steals the show from him. Remember, the GOP is analyzing why they lost this year and will spend the next four years giving Obama as many migraines as they can. Remember Newt in the 90's and his constant needling of the Clinton Adminsitration?

The confirmation hearing should be, I think the word is, interesting, if not a reality show train wreck pulling into the television station nearest you.
Posted by: Dana | Nov 21, 2008 8:08:40 PM
Good choice.

All I want to know that if he hires her, can he fire her?
Posted by: MyAudacity | Nov 21, 2008 7:44:18 PM
I hope I'm not the only one that noticed this. I was seeing this story on the television, and Clinton Advisor Harold Ickes was being interviewed. Apparently someone thought he would look better facing right, so they reversed the video. Not so good when there's a world globe right next to the man. Florida in the West and California in the East. I wonder how many kids that little faux paus will mess up.

Actually if she takes this it is a smart move on both their parts. She can run in 2016 with this on her resume. (she still would be younger than McCain). That could keep the Democrats in power for at least another 8 years beyond Obama's 8 if she ran and won.
No matter what you think of Hillary she has the intellect and diplomatic skills to handle this job.

I'm glad that Richardson took the SOC job. Somebody needs to mind the tomato stand. Excellent choice for this position.
