Alaska Personnel Board Clears Palin of Wrongdoing in Troopergate*

November 03, 2008 8:30 PM

A report released tonight clears Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin of charges that she committed ethics violations when she fired her public safety commissioner, Walter Monegan.

"There is no probable cause to believe that the governor, or any other state official, violated the Alaska Executive Ethics Act in connection with these matters," states the report, written by Timothy Petumenos, an independent counsel for the Alaska Personnel Board.

The Washington Post's James Grimaldi adds some context for this investigation: "After Palin was selected as Sen. John McCain's running mate, her attorneys attempted to take the investigation out of the hands of the legislative investigator by asking her hand-picked, three-person State Personnel Board to look into the matter. At a routine meeting, the board surprised attendees by announcing that its investigator would release his findings yesterday."

The first board did not find her guilty of anything, it was an opinion that one man had an that she reached over some imaginary ethics line by letting her husband use her office to make phone calls. This whole case is such a waste of government time, searching for one persons personal view of unwritten laws.

The people have a right to protest and demand any public official be fired for any reason that they want. Holding elected office (or your wife holdong office) does not remove your rights as a citizen in those matters. Palin did not fire the Trooper.

This declaration of innocence is highly questionable for me since I have many government, agency documents indicating just the opposite. The attorney this time was Democrat. This is his legal opinion. It is not a courts opinion.

This attorney used a different interpretation of Alaska ethics law. Pressure from McCain Campaign top lawyers was high. The legislative investigation attorney was Republican. He found her guilty indirectly as he felt she allowed the pressure by others to fire Trooper Wooten. Top litigation attorney across America felt the first decision was correct and saw big law suits that will come of situation. All felt very serious!!

Divorce Trial judge warned Palin Family to stop their vendetta to have Trooper Wooten fired.

Reviewing whole political history of Palin reveals she does pursue vendettas against people she does not like to fire/dismiss them. Unfortunately legal retribution by these people against Sarah Palin for such horrible unjust employment tactics action is almost negligible legally. Alaska Laws only protect the top official. So therefore these top officials serve more like a dictator.

Wasilla residents know not to speak out against Sarah Palin. Sarah plays "populist" theme quite well. She realizes many of Alaska voters are not well read of knowledgeable on issues. But that is up to Alaska to deal with.

Alaska had 11 Republican official indicted by FBI since 2004. Republican Ted Stevens just convicted. There have been 0 Democrats. Sarah did not have any part of this. Alaska government was actually being investigated themselves.

Politics in Alaska is corrupt!! They are a state of only 267,000+ residents. 11 indicted legislators is quite high when you realize they only have 16 total.

My documents of police investigation, divorce trial transcripts, government/agency documents, etc indicate Sarah Palin did attempt to get her brother inlaw fired by indirectly allowing subordinate and her husband to use her position to access government heads to pursue firing Wooten.

I do not believe the case is over!! More will be coming. Monegan never expected to be rehired. He was only offended by the damage they did to his many years of past outstanding public police service in Alaska. Trooper Wooten has an excellent case for a law suit. Too bad he isn't a better cop.

Everyone don't believe everything regarding this second Ethics Board investigation. This is just another attorneys opinion.

More to still come!!

Palin conveniently filed ethics charges against herself so she could handpick and hire 3 individuals for the board. Predictably, they cleared her. Contrast that to a bipartisan panel of 8 Republicans who found her guilty of abusing her power as governor. So ironically, she clears herself (or thinks she does) through an application of excessive power plays as a governor. For those who find comfort in familiarity, especially with the Bush administration, she's an understandable veep choice.

"The Washington Post's James Grimaldi adds some context for this investigation."

I can't begin to count the number of times that facts and stories didn't get "context" because that would have hurt Obama and the Democrats. So many times there's been *zero* interest in getting to the bottom of things or giving a full picture. The media does such a good job if they're doing a show on a real life crime, detailing the logic of law enforcement, prosecutors and everyone involved, and not forgetting to turn over every stone or to suggest other ways of looking at the evidence. If only they'd used more of that ability to be balanced in covering this election.

Well h*ll the board consisted ONLY of people APPOINTED BY PALIN, so did anyone really 'expect' any other outcome? After all, those people NEED TO KEEP THEIR JOBS!

I was not surprised the Ethics Board cleared her. The ehtics board is appointed by Sarah Palin. So is the Attorney General.

I have many government PDF files. Sarah Palin did try to get Tropper Wooten fired. Her husband did it for her, once she found out she had to back off. And she got her staff to do also. Judge even warned her family to stop vendetta.

This attorney gave a legal opinion - I did find some objections to his reference used of the ethics law.

Court of law could have a different view I think!!

Sarah Palin whole political history reveals a person who uses personal agendas to fire people.

Sarah Palin is guilt in my book!!

Like the old saying goes, "there's good news and bad news".

The good news is that Palin has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

The bad news is that, just like McCain's Keating 5 episode, you can be cleared of any wrongdoing but 20 years from now the liberal talking heads will still be referencing TrooperGate as a scandalous blot of wrongdoing on her record.

Jake,

Appreciate the update of your post. Thanks.

The Anchorage Daily News has a good article today about this, and since it's the "hometown" paper I think it's worth a read (I might mention that they endorsed Obama for president). It provides some more details about the personnel board and the board members. For example, all three were originally appointed by the previous governor, two are registered as undeclared voters and their terms on the board expire in 2010 and 2012 respectively, and one was reappointed by Palin earlier this year (which would mean that her term expires in 2014) and is a Republican. Also, they can only be fired "for cause" and are actually volunteers and are not paid employees of the state. And Mr. Petumenos, who did the actual investigation and wrote the report, is a Democrat. I couldn't find the link to the article about it, but I'm pretty sure that I remember reading that he donated money to Tony Knowles, a Democratic previous governor of Alaska who ran against Palin in 2006. My memory could be faulty on that though since I can't find the article where I read that.

There's also footage of Mr. Petumenos' press conference on the ADN website.

Jake, just wanted to say that I appreciate your work this election. I think you've played it straight down the middle. Hope you get to catch up on some sleep after it's over!

More good news for the McCain/Palin campaign.

Hillary Clinton said:
"In the White House there is no time for speeches and on-the-job training. Senator McCain will bring a lifetime of experience to the campaign and Senator Obama will bring a speech that he gave in 2002. I think that is a significant difference."

I demand that the this news service reports this where and when it makes an impact. You have done all you could do to tear her down over this and it was only alligations.

SHE IS CLEARED OF ANY WRONG DOING!!

Posted by: Repeat it all day | Nov 4, 2008 8:34:17 AM

So she files a complaint about herself with a Board appointed by the Governor and they clear her of any wrong doing. Sounds like how they used to handle things when Tammany Hall ran NYC.

Another smear about Gov. Palin cleared up.
Bad news, eh, Jake?
And yet Jake and his media buddies could not take the time to investigate Obama.

If Obama is elected watch all the bad news start flowing out about him, watch how quickly he falls from his arrogant throne, watch him be the first President-elect to bunker himself away from the Press before he becomes President.
Watch Ayers, Rev. Wright come out of the shadows and scare the heck out of every American.
Obama and the Dems only have 2 years of damage to do to America and the world; how much will they do?

len,

Do you actually believe feminists support Palin?

Quite the opposite. She exploits her looks (which aren't too bad for her age), she winks and coos etc.

Did you hear her talk to "Sarkosy"?

My God. Any feminist would shudder at the thought of her representing them.

She is the anti-feminist, par excellence.

Feminists supported Hilary Clinton. She is the ultimate for them.

Palin engages in wrongdoing practically everytime she opens her mouth.

Posted by: Sue | Nov 4, 2008 2:35:50 AM

Well, that is an incredible relief to have this reassurance that Sarah Palin has been cleared of any and all charges by this committee of sock puppets.

But I'm just wondering when she will owe up to her mis-statements on other issues, such as:

- Her lies about the Bridge To Nowhere.

- Her exaggerations about Alaska's contribution to America's total oil and gas production.

- Her lies about the progress of the plan for constructing a natural gas pipeline from Alaska (and the $500 million taxpayer giveaway to a foreign company).

-Her lies about her alleged pay-cut as mayor of Wasilla.

-Her lies about prior statements on climate change.

-Her lies about what Alaska's state scientists said about the state of polar bears in Alaska.

And on and on and on.

I can't wait for the explanations for all of those.

McCain will bring poor judgement starting with his VP pick. I think he has been looking rather peaked lately and is in poor health. McCain also brings an erratic temperament.

Dave, the Troopergate Report clearly found that Palin abused the power of her office in repeated attempts by her and 'the first dude' to get her ex-brother-in-law fired.

Sorry, it's what the report found . .. Palin abused her power.
