Iran to Hold Conference on What Obama Means
November 17, 2008 7:53 AM
ABC News' Lara Setrakian brings my attention to Iranian Television reports that the government of Iran is planning on holding a conference entitled "Barack Obama's Election: The Future of Iran-U.S. Ties," where various Iranian experts will assess just what President-elect Obama means to that Persian country.
Mohammad-Javad Zarif, the former Iranian ambassador to the United Nations, will be among those discussing what Obama means.
You may recall, we asked the President-elect about Iran at his first and only post-election press conference. Mr. Obama sounded less than eager to hop a Midway-to-Tehran shuttle, saying, "Iran's development of a nuclear weapon, I believe, is unacceptable. And we have to mount a international effort to prevent that from happening. Iran's support of terrorist organizations, I think, is something that has to cease."
And some in Iran seem to view Obama's election skeptically. "People who put on a mask of friendship, but with the objective of betrayal, and who enter from the angle of negotiations without preconditions, are more dangerous," deputy commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps Hossein Taeb told the Mehr News Agency last week.

But iranians are open for dialog. americans should grow up and accept it. they have no choice if they want to appear civilized.
Is Mr. Shahidi joking here? Iran is currently engaged in at least three different "invasions" through proxies in Syria/Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan. Hezbollah cells are operative around the world and have carried out significant violence in South America and Africa. The pot, as they say, calling the kettle black.

Worshippers of Obama are actually a bunch of liberal do-gooders who have no ideas of how the real world is.

What are americans so afraid of?
Iran hasnt invaded any country in the last 200 years. USA has used nuclear weapons twice on civilians. The list of american terror is long.
But iranians are open for dialog. americans should grow up and accept it. they have no choice if they want to appear civilized.

I guess the conference will be one of inference. Judging from the title, they're not expecting input or reciprocation. Oh well, I guess it'll be Persians contemplating mystery.

We should not exaggerate hopes in Obama. It is true that he said he is willing to talk with Iran. However, he also said no option will be taken off the table, including the military option. And so long they have Israeli loyalists at the top of the US government and that those Israeli loyalists believe Iran is a great threat to them, does anyone really believe Obama won't hesitate to attack Iran for his Zionist masters? As for Iraq, Obama wants to keep about 200,000 troops there plus military bases, is that ending the war in Iraq? As for Afghanistan, please everyone knows Al Qaeda is nothing but a CIA fraud. Osama Bin Laden is dead. Obama wants to increase troops in Afghanistan and thus increase the number of crimes against humanity the US troops have been committing there for the past few years. This is not ending the War on Terror. Obama is a fraud.

Can Obama forge peace with Iran? Yes he can! Can Obama get U.S. Troops out of Iraq in 16 months? Yes he can! Can Obama stop Osama? Yes he can! Can Obama bring about peace and prosperity? Yes he can!

Iran will definitely address its concern in the conference. Iran set a framework for future talks with Obama. Iran will repeat the stance it has already taken as far as international diplomacy is concerned.

what they are having a conf. about is the fact that they have listed to obama and realize he is no dunce-like bush.

This may be misconstrued, but much like the U.S., the Iranians should not be terminally confused with their representatives/administration, elected or not, save we, American citizens, be judged by the merits and actions of the Bush administration.(I'm proud to be an American-- I'm not too proud of Bush and co.)
I think the initial low-level dialog is a rational start and will at least ensure, if all else fails, we tried in earnest to broker resolve for the peoples sake, if not for the commanders at the helm.

How can anyone think that the conference is literally about the meaning of his name! OF COURSE it is about that Obama's election may mean for US-Iran relations.

Some skepticism on both sides is healthy. Obama never promised "friendship" with Iran as it stands. But I do believe he has refused to demonize Iran, and will do his best to find a solution regarding U.S./Iranian relations that will satisfy both countries as much as possible. It would be unwise of Iran to assume that Obama wants to embrace them as friends at this point. There will be a lot of negotiations and diplomacy needed, and concessions will need to be made, especially regarding nuclear capabilities and terrorism issues.

duh....they don't mean literally what does "Obama" mean...they mean what does his election mean to their country

Simple wiki search will tell them what 'Obama' means: It is based on the Luo (technically, Dholuo, the name of the language of the Luo) word bam, which means "crooked, slightly bending" . The prefix O- means "he", and many Luo male names begin with it.
