Loose Ends: Joe the Plumber's Records-Searcher Punished

November 21, 2008 9:09 AM

The Columbus Dispatch reports that "Helen Jones-Kelley, director of the Department of Job and Family Services, will be placed on unpaid leave for one month in response to an inspector general's investigation. The investigation found Jones-Kelley had no legitimate reasons to check on Toledo-area resident Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, who was popularized as 'Joe the Plumber' by Republican presidential candidate John McCain. It also confirmed she improperly used her state e-mail account to raise campaign money for President-elect Barack Obama.

"'Now, she's made a bad judgment and I've acknowledged that,'" said Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland. "'But I do not believe that a lifetime of honorable public service can be just discounted in the face of what has happened.' The report by Inspector General Thomas P. Charles found that Jones-Kelley 'had no legitimate agency function or purpose' in authorizing the checks. It said the reasons Jones-Kelley offered for the checks in child-support, public assistance and unemployment tax databases 'were not credible.'"

Will they throw the guys who tapped into Obamas phone in jail. NO, will they be fired. So far they are getting 2 weeks unpaid leave. This kind of stuff happens to all kinds of people who should know better. But looking at their records and service to the oompanies is also importand to consider. Listen that creep Larry Craig is still in Congress pending out come of appeals and a convicted felon was almost elected in Alaska. Strange things are happening so fast that it makes your head spin. But each case must be judged on its merits.

Well, the governor certainly sent a strong message. Violate a person's right to privacy and receive a slap on the wrist.
And sure, it wasn't politically motivated - an African American donating the max to Barack Obama searches the data base for harmful information.
And the ACLU on all this - out to lunch.

It's too bad that delusional, shut-ins with grandiose self-important ideations get access to blogs and tv interviews and can exist in this society under false pretenses and then want to burrow in the mud of anonymity to hide after attacking anybody who disagrees with them, claiming "privacy priviledge".

Yes, I argue that the law should be such that it would make everyone de-cloak (to borrow a Star Trek term) and reveal their true identities and hold everyone accountable and allow everyone the freedom to scrutinize fact from fiction. What a better democracy if everything was in the "sunshine" and all biases and hidden agendas and past crimes, mental infermities and notorieties revealed.

To MY GOODNESS; You would make a bad manager in america you are not guilty just because you THINK someone did something.

In todays age logins and passwords make it very easy for senior managers to check what a person has done while on the system.

You are so wrong. You make the case for people wanting Unions or tenure protected jobs.

I think everyone here is missing the point. Whether he is a dem or repub does it matter when someone's privacy is violated. Ah were is the ACLU, what about if this happen to you would you not want the person who violated your privacy to be punished. Here all I see is partisan bickering and no one even cares about a persons constitutional rights and just on what side he is on???? Has it gotten to hate so much that we can even justify the use of big brother??? Get off you partisan asses and look at the what is really going on. Of the 18 checks run on him only three were requested from the media.

ALL information housing, employment, license, lawsuit, criminal, credit, insurance, education is availble from legit info providers for a fee. I would suggest that ALL such information should be made available to all...... ALL info should be free and on open.

Posted by: who what where | Nov 21, 2008 12:12:29 PM

Okay, so then lets see the who, what, where on who what where. Don't hold out on us.

ALL information housing, employment, license, lawsuit, criminal, credit, insurance, education is availble from legit info providers for a fee. I would suggest that ALL such information should be made available to all. We live in an open society---Secrets only belong in totalitarian societies. Terrorists, Ner-do-wells, child-molesters and crooked officials presently too easily hide behind so-called "confidentiality" and "privacy" laws. ALL info should be free and on open.

This is a head of a dept. Now everyone beneath her has a freebee . She must be held to a higher standard. Thats why we pay her the big bucks , to take responsibilty. Plus she failed to own up to by lying. One month non paid vacation is not enough. There are plenty of honest people looking for work. Makes you wonder if the penalty was firing she may want to talk up about who either requested info or gave info to. Makes ya wonder .....

So then the illegal wire tappings, torture, lying us into a quagmire in Iraq which has killed 4000 plus soldiers and mamed thousands, destroyed families. That's OK?
------------------------------
SI, you are total MORON....how about you back up all this garbage with some real facts...examples, REAL examples of these illegal wire tappings, tortures...

Oh by the way....You do actually REMEMBER 9/11 right? AND the fact that there have been ZERO....say it with me liberal fruitcakes...ZERO attacks on American soil since then!

How many lives were meseed up on that day...and in the aftermath of economic upheaval? You libs always seem to have short and selective memories when it suits your cause!

Get grip boy, This is a very dangerous world we live in, unless your ready to face daily bombings and shootings in your own neighborhood, be glad that there are those of us who understand that you need to actually protect this country.

Again, if your your own mentally challenged minds have forgotten, the terrorists that commited the 9/11 attacks were here already in the US. We may never know how many other attacks have been thwarted because the stepped up surveillance, but most sane and intelligent people are quite happy that we have not had a repeat of 9/11.

Torture, ... Lets see, I know people that have serve at GITMO... The people there are getting better treatment than most people get here for things that land them in jail. Certainly much better treatment than those various people who have been beheaded by terrorists groups! I suppose you bledding hearts think that if you walked into their cells and kissed their feet, that they would willingly tell you everything they know.

Lying us into Iraq...
Guess what go back and look at Clintons 1998 State of the Union address...You might be surprised at what you find there!

First of all... Joe the plumber is a liar from the start. He was in debt, late on taxes, not a licensed plumber...what was he going to buy? What bank would have given a guy like him a loan for a business anyway. Maybe a crooked S&L from the 80's.

He lying when he talked to Obama. He may have dreamed about buying a company, but it wasn't going to happen in his lifetine. Unless enough of you have kept sending him money. He would have drifted quickly off into oblivion if John Boy and Sexy Sara hadn't jumped all over him a dragged him out as their new poster boy.

I am sorry...Helen Jones-Kelley should be terminated. She is in position of responsibility and knows she shouldn't divulge personal information on file. Oh, so its OK to ruin ones reputation, in the case of Joe Wurzelbacher. Just slap Helen on wrist and say don't do this again you have a lifetime of honorable public service. Its OK to ruin Joe's "lifetime of honorable private service and reputation but don't injure the perpetrator.
Where is your "head" Mr Governor is Helen the type of public servant you want to promote? What else has Helen gotten away with!

If a political hack had accessed CONFIDENTIAL state government databases on Bill the terrorist, Jeremiah the racist or Tony the slumlord, civil libertarians would be up in arms.

Well, we haven't heard a peep from them about what happened to Joe the Plumber. What is the ACLU doing about this issue which clearly fits into this "nonpartisan" organization's mission statement?

Probably they are doing nothing. They are undoubtedly too busy, at this time, preparing papers in favor of restricting free speech via the Fairness Doctrine.

If the ACLU had some noble purposes at one time that is the case no more.

All I can say is, "So what". So she looked into his file. You may recall that her department didn't publish the information. All the material that came out on Joe was from other sources, and frankly he invited the scrutiny once he became a major part of McCain's election message. Anyway, I assure you that we have more to fear from Presidents who refuse to follow the laws of the land (cf. signing statements) than a local department checking on whether someone has paid their child support!

Please, her actions are inexcusable and she should be fired but to make this more than it is is ridiculous. Try looking in the mirror next time you open your mouths.

As a Democratic Ohio voter, I will be showing my dismay with my vote. I guess partisanship is alive and well. All hell breaks loose when anything happens that is "perpetrated" by anyone who is a Republican. But a Democrat does it and it is just a monetary lapse of judgment in a long career? Who knows if this is the only lapse of judgment? Because she says so?

Posted by: beebop | Nov 21, 2008 11:17:42 AM

All such information "revealed" about Joe-the-P should be made readily available to everyone as public record. Many states have "sunshine laws" where all such information is easily availble. If eveything is out in the open all partisan critics could be mollified.

Let's not forget that all Joe did was ASK A QUESTION!!!! This whole thing is even worse then when the Clinton Judge and Jury had the two folks arrested (again, in Chicago) years ago when they DARED to yell something out by way protest as the king and queen of chaos went by. All Joe did was ASK A QUESTION. Bambi didn't even HAVE to answer it. He just accidentally spoke the truth when he did.

For the purposes of supporting our sanity in the dark months ahead, there's a very important number to keep in mind:

58,343,671 people did NOT vote for Bambi O'Biden. 58,343,671 voted to continue these United States of America as a Constitutional Republic.

Don't forget on the bad days: there are 58,343,670 people WHO AGREE WITH YOU!!!

He's gonna implode, folks. The empty suit who has only played roles as a grownup is not going to enjoy this ride. He's like the stupid dog who accidentally catches the car he was chasing and (think air balloon), "What the hell do I do now?" That's why you haven't seen Bambi the last couple of days. He's off in some room chainsmoking and Rahm Emanuel is slapping him and telling him to get a pair. (Maybe that's how Hillary's name came up for SOS)

Please tell me we are not going to become a "Hitler" type country with the Helen Jones Kelley's running amuck checking on private citizens.

Posted by: SmartM | Nov 21, 2008 10:42:34 AM

She should be punished and thrown to jail for several years! Husein Obama is surely behind all this so he must be impeached immediately.

Sarah Palin / Joe the Plumber 2012!

Posted by: Mom like Sarah | Nov 21, 2008 10:33:05 AM

Anyone who thinks this sort of thing is new, or restricted to one party, has a damn short memory, or at least a highly selective one. What needs to happen is that BOTH sides need to stop trying so hard to push America to one political extreme or the other, and allow people to live their lives according to their own standards, ideas, and beliefs. After all, THAT is the principle on which this country was founded, not capitalism, socialism, christianity (or any other religion), etc.
