McCain and Obama Meet in Chi-town

November 17, 2008 2:37 PM

Less than two weeks after Election Day, President-elect Barack Obama Monday welcomed the man he defeated, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to a meeting at his transition headquarters in downtown Chicago. It was the first time the two had spoken since McCain phoned Obama to concede.

"Just going to have a good conversation about how we can work together to fix up the country and also to offer thanks to Sen. McCain for the outstanding service he's already rendered," Obama told reporters at the outset of the meeting, which clocked in at under an hour.

Asked during the photo op if he was now going to help the man he lost to, the Arizona Republican replied, "Obviously."

A source close to Obama said the meeting was "excellent" with "great chemistry and agreement" between the two men. For his part, a source close to McCain said the meeting went very well, with another McCain source saying the Republican was pleased that the meeting was so substantive and Obama respectful.

Afterwards, the two lawmakers released a joint statement calling the exchange "a productive conversation".

“At this defining moment in history, we believe that Americans of all parties want and need their leaders to come together and change the bad habits of Washington so that we can solve the common and urgent challenges of our time," they said in the statement. "It is in this spirit that we had a productive conversation today about the need to launch a new era of reform where we take on government waste and bitter partisanship in Washington in order to restore trust in government, and bring back prosperity and opportunity for every hardworking American family."

Joining the lawmakers at today's meeting were Obama's incoming White House Chief of Staff Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., and McCain's good friend and colleague, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC.  The two had worked well together negotiating the presidential debates, and helped arranged today's conference after Obama spoke with Graham after the election.

After Obama made his brief comment prior to the meeting, reporters were then escorted out of the room, but not before firing off numerous questions as they left, prompting Obama to say with a smile, "You're incorrigible".

Is it your position, BForbes, that we citizens have no right to criticize our government?

I've criticized George Bush and I'll criticize Barack Obama. I will not sit back and support policies and actions that I disagree with.

If President Elect Barack Obama doesn't do a good job as President the next 4 years, then vote him out of office. Our country and our government need to come together and support our new President. Whether you voted for him or not, the land of the free and the home of the brave have spoken. Let the system go to work for the good of our great country. We will all prosper by working for the common good, with unity comes strength.

"source close to Obama" & "source close to McCain"???

What's the matter, Jake? Can't spell "Rahm Emanuel" and "Lindsey Graham"? Why on earth are you quoting "sources" when their comments are very positive and complementary?

Jake, you are adorable. Or should I say, "You're incorrigible". I LOVE that you threw that little tidbit in at the end-- that Obama refused to answer questions about things like the auto industry bailout and waved the press off by laughingly saying, ""You're incorrigible".

Yeah, it's called trying to do their jobs, Mr. Obama. The press wants answers and you want photo ops. That's the typical press/politician tension. I appreciate when a member of the media points out that Obama is just like other politicians in trying to shape the narrative. The difference is, the press usually acquiesces to Obama in ways they never do for other politicians. I hope the press continues to be "incorrigible" and does its job, something that was rarer than it should have been during the campaign.

What is happening to my narrow world?? McCain is paling around with someone who "pals around with terrorists" and how could an Arab muslim hire a Jew who volunteered for military service in Israel as his chief of staff?!!!? Please, God help me see it all in simple, easy to hate concepts. Argggggghhhhh!

President Obama should include more Jewish people in his administration. The Jews are the Chosen people. Not the christians, not the mormons not the muslims, not the jehovah witneses, not the whites, not the blacks not the Italians not the Indians, but only the jews are God's chosen people, it is writen in the Bible. When the Gods made Us, They made Us in they'r Imige exactly with just a small difference; All the Gods were born allready circumcized, but not Us Humans. When the Gods saw this they said let that small difference be. When god made the Jews His chosen people ,He put a DNA marker on them ,and He also wanted all of them circumsized, and made the everlasting covenant with the Jews. And we knw the Jews are circumsized, we dont know, however if Jesus was circumsized , the Bible says nothing about this, justthat he was babtized, like President Bush And Obama Or Clinton, but we dont know if they are circumsizd. The Jewish people are special people they will be the Fiddlers on the top of the roofs, and on top of the World. This is all in the Bible.

NomiAnn, how many chances did you give President Bush? Only one, I hope. What did you do after he blew that chance (surely you didn't agree with all his decisions)?

"he is making an effort to "reach across the aisle," and now it is time for the republicans to do likewise. . ."

Yes, Republicans need to reciprocate in order to put their party back together. It's managed to implode in a process of at least eight years -something undeniable when you look at the general election results.

So far, I believe Obama has done extremely well in his efforts to bring about reconcilation after very heated primary general election campaigns. Given the times, especially the economic crisis, we need a leader who can unite the country and in a calm and organized manner start the process which will bring about economic recovery. Obama's encouraging average
citizens to offer ideas, through change.gov, is a terrific way to get our citiznes involved in the democratic process. he is making an effort to "reach across the aisle," and now it is time for the republicans to do likewise.

Pefros- It's a display of class from both individuals.

NomiAnn, No doubt President-Elect Obama is very greatful that you, NomiAnn, will "give him a chance, but only a chance." I'm sure he hopes he doesn't fritter away that chance that you are giving him, NomiAnn. Who knows what the repercussions would be!

Kudos to President-elect Obama, this man displays class - something sadly lacking from American politics in recent years.

And I agree also ... McCain is a man of his word and worth! I thank McCain for coming together with Obama and I hope that Obama will LISTEN to McCain ... and as far as I'm concerned he should be placed "high regard" as one who Obama listens to.

Obama is now being watched, every move that he makes is going to tell us what his functions will be. We will give him a chance, but only a chance! If he slides around, he will be only making a fool of himself. I do NOT believe a word he says ... we'll see how "center" he truly is. No.#1 if he allows this huge bailout to happen ... he has LOST it with MUCH of America!!! Why do WE have to pay for THEIR errors!!?!! FannieMae/FreddieMac paid Obama and his new first underarm Cabinet member he has selected are two of the highest paid profiteers from this fall ... we'll just SEE what they are going to do to put this NATION on it's feet ??? or enslave us ~ the hard working citizens ~ to pay off THEIR debt!!! I say to all those who received the icing on the cake from the "fall" ... give all the money back to get us OUT OF THIS MESS!!! Where has Obama's luxurious funds from this fall gone to? How about his bud that he placed as his #1 hancho? Both of these guys along with a few others who got the icing off that cake fall ... they need to answer .... and give the money back, so that WE don't have to pay for their wealth!!! That's a FACT!

McCain has moved up quite a few rungs from the bottom of the pit I had him in a few weeks ago. I liked his concession speech, it spoke volumes about his integrity, which I thought he had lost.

I also like that he is willing to work with Obama to get things done. This is the McCain of 2000. Kudos Mr. McCain.

I'm glad to see Obama is living up to his reputation as a uniter. And three cheers for McCain, he's not a sore loser.
Now, if only we would follow their example and all work together to get this country back on track.

Our new president wants to bring out the best ideas from all of America talent and he knows that those ideas are at times in the minds of people that you sometimes disagree with. This is so wonderful.Obama and McCain are finding common ground so that we can come up with real solutions to America's problems.McCain was right in those ads when he said change was coming.I welcome the fact that he is willing to be part of that change to serve his country within the Obama administration.Center- Right or Center Left. Lets move to the center together and Solve America's problems. This is a picture and actions that our great country needs. This is awesome! Hopefully it will be productive and long lasting.
