Obama at the Oval
November 10, 2008 8:59 AM
President-elect Barack Obama and First-Lady-in-Waiting Michelle come to the White House today at 2 pm ET.
Obama is likely to discuss with President Bush the economy, a stimulus package, how the Treasury Department is spending those 700 billion dollars to stabilize the economy, and whether the auto industry should get any of those funds.
We're told that this week, the president-elect could announce key staffers in his White House -- perhaps press secretary and White House counsel, deputy chiefs of staff or domestic policy advisers. High ranking economic and national security advisers will likely be introduced later, along with related Cabinet secretaries, which we do not expect this week.
Awaiting those to-be-named Cabinet secretaries: a stack of executive orders issued by Bush which transition chief John Podesta has been amassing for Obama and his team to review. Obama pledged to overturn Bush's ban on federal funding for research on embryonic stem cells, for instance. Allies will also ask him to overturn Bush executive orders on the environment, abortion and to shut down Guantanamo Bay.
But decisions on executive orders have not been made.
As for the larger agenda, in addition to economic policies -- a middle-class tax cut, stimulus package, and extending unemployment benefits -- Obama and his team are debating how much to try to tackle in their first 100 days. Should they go for broke and introduce legislation on other economic matters, such as energy, health care, and education? Or take a more piecemeal approach? No decisions yet.

JWench - I was questioning the accuracy of Jake Tapper reporting that no decisions had been made on executive orders after I'd heard from other sources they'd be a priority in overturning. I'm not expecting the process to be rushed.

Sorry
The only ones I have read that he is definitely going to overturn so far are the stem cell research and there was a second that I can't remember what it was off the top of my head.

JWench - there were a lot of people against Iraq - that was/is their right.
Strangely enough - there ARE people who are NOT worse off today than they were 7 years ago. EVERYONE isn't having to file for foreclosure, etc.
Do I believe our economy is doing well? No. Do I believe it started with President Bush? No. Do I believe for a minute that ANY of you will give ANY blame to your beloved former President Clinton? No. Why? Because you are so filled with hate for President Bush that EVERYTHING is his fault. The name calling has been horrible. And now we are supposed to all just be nice and get along. Forget any differences and go along with president-elect Obama. It doesn't work that way. There ARE differences that aren't correctable just because the election is over.
Just because the dems say so

It was not one Party's fault. It was both( the economy). If I remember correctly both sides did quite a bit of name calling.
Do you think Sarah Palin was right for saying Obama palled around with terrorists and some of the other hateful thing said? Do you think the robocalls from the GOP calling Obama a baby killer was the right thing to do? I certainly don't think it was.
I don't think anyone can say Bush's Presidency was a model Presidency. Two wars, an economy on the brink of collapse, hatred around the world for this country. (The economy is not all Bush's fault, but he helped contribute to it).
When a President tramples the Constitution like he has, invades a country that was not a threat to us, why would anybody not dislike the guy?

DK - your "language intented" insults just show you for what you are. I'm done w/you. I don't take well to insulted - veiled or blatant - from you or anyone else. People like you are the problem, not the solution

I voted for Obama and I am sure there will be times I won't agree with him on something. But nobody will agree with their President 100% of the time. I am sure he won't be perfect.
It's time to let a new generation take the torch.
One thing I like about Obama is he analyzes things and takes a methodical approach to them and also he recognizes his weaknesses and consults other people.

I was under the impression that Obama was seeking to nip those executive orders in the bud.

Give him a chance. He only won the election last week. I am sure they will want to look over those first to see if they should be overturned or not.

Doris: You can pretend you don't understand what we are saying, but what we are saying could not be more clear:
We are entitled to disagree with PRESIDENT-ELECT BARACK OBAMA all we like, and I'm sure that I will on any number of issues, myself. But the fact remains that the electorate has unequivocally signalled that it wants to close the book on the Bush Presidency. Either evolve (language intentional) from certain of the retrograde positions of the Bush Administration (some of which I assume you share), or get left behind.
If that is not clear enough, let me explain further. Bush's position on stem cell research was a relic the day it was issued. Obama will take a position that is far more enlightened. You can cling to (language intentional) the Bush position and be left to the dustbin along with anti-misceginationists, for example, or you can walk into the light. Either way, this policy is going to change and we can all be thankful for that. Come join us.

JWench- where was that attitude during the last 7 years?
Posted by: Doris | Nov 10, 2008 11:15:34 AM
The 2000 election left hard feelings because ther were some discrepancies in the voting and a lot of people felt there was some funny business. You can't compare that to now.
In 2004 they did what they did to Obama, unfortunately people listened to the swiftboating and Kerry lost. In 2008 we knew it was coming and fought back.
Bush called himself a uniter and as you can see he has accomplished a big divide.Bush's second term well that speaks for itself. Do you wonder why the rest of the world hates us?
I am one that was against us going into Iraq from the get go. They overstepped their bounds on the Constitution by wiretapping innocent AMERICAN citizens as well as a lot of other things.
If anybody thinks the last 8 years was good, they need their head examined.

Decisions on executive orders not made? I think this is a reference to the Bush executive orders which have been speedily created, most having to do with further deregulation on the economy and environment. I was under the impression that Obama was seeking to nip those executive orders in the bud.

"And Jesus said to them, Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's."
Barack is a believer in God, and I can't help wondering what it must be like for a person to be granted the kind of power that President's are given to use---or abuse. Whether we have been unhappy with Bush's leadership or not, he is in power because God allowed it. I hope people are praying for this meeting between Barack and Pres. Bush; that it goes well, especially on a human to human basis. Americans don't need any more drama, we need wise leadership.

DKNY - so, if we don't agree with you, we have no place in the United States? We'll see.
Posted by: Doris | Nov 10, 2008 11:04:07 AM
Where did DK say that? DK is right we all need to back the incoming President for this to work. The GOP kept saying Country first, well this is a good time to put your Country first and not your Party.

Obama''s not going to govern. He's going to RULE!
"With the daunting challenges we face it's important that Pres. Elect Obama be prepared to really take power and begin to rule day one."
- Valerie Jarrett
Obama's going to RULE us.

Doris: You're missing Clint's point: The Democrats are in charge. With the Presidency and both houses of Congress, we don't actually give a rat's patoot whether you come along. Clint's inviting you as a gratuitous gesture of good will. The point is, if you don't join us you'll be run over and left in the dustbin of history with the current President. So come on board; if you like intelligence, inquisitiveness, insightfulness, willingness to listen to others, etc., you just might like what Obama has to offer.

Doris,
dont fall for it. "Barry" should be your first clue.
Jake,
so far, so good (except the secret service name thing.. what's the point of having code names if they are going to be broadcast on TV?) By the way, Jake, can you serve as my connection to the white house? I really want to get a job there but an article over at msnbc says you would have to have connections. You are the only connection some of us have with the political world. So help us out? We need energy jobs.

Clint - kinda like the dems did?
Obama is the president elect. We'll deal with it. I think it very ironic that we are hearing all this "let's work together", etc crap coming from you all now. Where the hell has it been for the last 7 years? Oh wait - it didn't fit YOUR agenda so it was evil and there was no reason to compromise.

You have a choice, you can come along with us, or be left behind to wallow in your pity party. America is changing for the better. No longer will we allow the NeoCons to pillage us financially or environmentally.
