Obama Brings Back 'Virtue of Selfishness' -- But in Different Context

November 02, 2008 7:35 PM

CLEVELAND, Ohop -- Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., brought back the Ayn Rand-ian "virtue of selfishness" clause he's used in the past to describe the way the McCain-Palin ticket has tried to appeal to those who are reluctant to pay higher taxes.  But tonight he used it in a different, less controversial way.

"The change we need won’t come from government alone," Obama said to a crowd of an estimated 80,000. "It will come from each of us doing our part in our own lives, in our own communities. It will come from each of us looking after ourselves and our families but also looking after each other. You know I – it’s been awhile now – we’ve made a virtue out of selfishness, there’s no virtue in that. We made a virtue of irresponsibility and we need to usher in a new spirit of service and sacrifice and responsibly."

And on the same day Republicans have begun attacking him for a January interview he gave in which he discussed ways to incentivize coal plants converting to new technology -- and to penalize those that plan on using old technology -- Obama brought up his support for clean coal technology in his public, on the stump, remarks for the first time since Sept. 29. (At least as far as we can tell.)

"We can invest $15 billion a year in renewable sources so energy,  building wind turbines and solar panels, a new electricity grid, the next generation of biofuels, invest in clean coal technology –- find ways –- we can create 5 million new jobs, new energy jobs all across this country," Obama said.

Obama is not qualified to be president and he wants to raise taxes on people who work so that he can give money to people who don't.

He also wants to raise the FICA/social security tax on people making more than $102,000 right away. That hits doubly hard on people who are self-employed. Don't elect this job destroying Robin Hood wannabe.

Obama has promised to bring a NEW level of honesty and transparency to the White House. But when it comes to offering the public documents about his public and private activities -- he gets a "F".
He had the NERVE to complain that the Bush White House was the most secretive administrations in our history...
We are one day away from possibly electing a new president, and OBama continues to stonewall requests for documents about his legislative, personal health, education, financing backround, continue to be shielded from the public. While the Republican candidates, add Joe The Plumber too, are investigated and their information has been made full disclosure while the press is strangely quiet about Obama's stonewalling.

WHAT IS HE HIDING?

Obama is going to lecture ME on being selfish?

He has never served anything other than himself in his entire life and he wants to lecture us as if he were our father?

When that immature little boy works 80+ hours a week, 365 days a year to build a business that provides jobs in his community, we can sit down and talk. Until then, he's just another poseur. I've done more for this country and my community than he has and he has NO right to call me selfish for not wanting to be a permanent part of Obama's new "slave class" of "citizens" who provide the jobs, drive the economy and are told to shut up and cough up the dough.

'The Word of our Lord not based on a political party that thinks he is the Messiah!'

so.... you've obviously never heard of Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and the rest..... you know, the 'good christians' who preach politics from the pulpit..

Glad you also defined 'your lord'.... not mine.

A Veteran - Warren Buffett is giving away almost his entire fortune. He is not only doing that - he is doing it right. The work that the Gates Foundation is doing may eradicate some contagious diseases in entire African nations. I think it is unprecedented - and incredible. It boggles the mind that you would attack that. He is not, like the McCains, from inherited wealth (oil on one side; booze and racetracks on the other). He is a self-made man. If there were more men like him. America really could change the world.

too bad you 'pro-lifers' were so quick to support Bush's war in Iraq... guess the death penalty doesn't count either.... neither do all the dead Iraqi civilians.....
but hey, that's OK... your 'family values' are best for America.....

Jack- Your article is an example of what irritates some americans about the press. You imply that the comments are just about "incentives". Senator Obama clearly states any increase in the number of coal plants under his proposals will be punitive; he clearly says electricity cost will go through the roof. This may not be a big thing in California, but it certainly may be to citizens in other states. Your article title could be " Obama incentives jeopardizes coal industry". Would that be fair? Maybe not. Its what the press emphasizes that leads to charges of bias. The press for example touts troopergate- but fails to say that the investigating agency had no punitive power and probably exceeded its mandate. The impression left by many americans is that the press is biased. Since some newspapers treat mcain/palin supporters like trailer trash ( see the NYT on their anthropological forays into the heartland)- its not to outlandish to accuse the press of retreating into nuance instead of presenting all sides.

Obama is not a man of CHARACTER and does not belong in the White House. He would probably 'choke' on MLK's words....I take that back...he's too smooth to stumble upon words unless his teleprompter doesn't work..

Obama is a politician that doesn't even respect the life of a little baby so how is he supposed to respect your life and mine. Human life must be protected from conception to natural death. He believes in a different kind of government; a socialistic one that is far different than the one our founding fathers established.

We can PROTECT the values of Life, Faith & Family for which this great nation was built upon by voting for McCain/Palin on Tuesday.

jhw539,

I have not heard any mention of MLK jr nor have I heard/seen any reference of Obama being a champion of civil rights since he won the nomination!

Obama is intentionally distancing himself from the African American community! What proof?

Go to Obama's website click on media and then tv ads. Tell me how may feature a single African American other then members of the Obama family.

Out of 95 ads how many do you think would pass this test?

I will save you the effort. There is ONLY ONE!

Ever single other ad is targeting Hispanics (10 of them) or whites! In 94 ad there are no groups of black at town hall meeting. No testimonials from blacks who are out of work. On top of that when the negative ad becomes positive due to Obama's plan, they only show white people benefiting!

I tell you the truth! There is only one ad where Obama allows a black person who is not a direct relative to even talk!

All but one commercial would not pass any affirmative action test.

Yes Obama is clueless if he was a man for the people why is Illinois in such bad shape, why has he only voted Present the majority of the time in the Senate, sounds like he needs a goverment class learn the topic.

He will not use union employees, in Chicago for his event tuesday night union workers are very angry how he has done this. If you are a union teacher or laborer do not vote for him.

Time for someone with direction, this is what the country needs someone to cut the pork out of goverment, Palin will go at that like there is no tomorrow. This is what we need in these financially difficult times for the whole world.

Republicans it has been proved on 60 minutes and by Greenspan that they did not play a part in the financial crisis. Even Clinton agreed this was not caused by the republicans.

Countries will never like the US, we have it all - nothing we could say or do will make them happy, but McCain knows foreign policy and what rules there are to work within. He is planning on ending the war, Obama wants to start more fights.

Do some reasearch you will find out all these things are true.

Melanie Patterson: "Why doesn't "The One" ever mention, pay tribute, or quote anything from Martin Luther King Jr?
I find that extremely ODD! But I have the answer..."
I have an answer too. You're either voting in incredible ignorance or your are flat out lying. Barack Obama frequently mentions Martin Luther King Jr, and has given several entire speeches in honoring him. I will also note that MLK Jr. was condemned and targeted by the FBI (wiretaps and hotel rooms bugged) for have acquaintances who once were affiliated with the American Communist Party. Are you proud to be voting blindly from a clear position of ignorance?

"And at some point, I know that one of my daughters will ask, perhaps my youngest, will ask, "Daddy, why is this monument here? What did this man do?"

What did Martin Luther King, Jr. Do?
How might I answer them?

Unlike the others commemorated in this place, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was not a president of the United States - at no time in his life did he hold public office. He was not a hero of foreign wars. He never had much money, and while he lived he was reviled at least as much as he was celebrated."
Excerpt from Barack Obama's 2006 speech delivered at groundbreaking for MLK memorial

Why doesn't "The One" ever mention, pay tribute, or quote anything from Martin Luther King Jr?
I find that extremely ODD! But I have the answer...
MLK was a conservative leader who dreamed that someday people will be judged the content of their CHARACTER and not the color of their skin. His dream was deeply rooted in the American dream that the character of our Civic leaders would line up with the character that is outlined in a book he held very dear, the BIBLE. We need to Vote To CHANGE based on the Truth, The Word of our Lord not based on a political party that thinks he is the Messiah!

OxyCon: "The man doesn't even look out for his own blood relatives."

Right, blood relatives - half relatives of the father who abandoned him as a baby. Most of whom he didn't even meet until he was an adult.

Another pathetic attempt to stir up fake indignation rather than discuss real issues like the economy or killing Bin Ladin.

Also, thanks for being honest about democrats having some faults too. Not many here do as the same as republicans. Everyone has faults.

Posted by: A Veteran | Nov 2, 2008 9:32:58 PM

Republicans are the particulates of both the foreign policy crisis, and the current economic crisis.

There was indeed some help from the previous admistration. Bush did in fact call for more regulation which was blocked by congress. I saw the videos of democrat after democrat saying Fannie and Freddie were just fine. NO problems. You could see them too on You tube. I saw a movie entitled IN DEBT WE TRUST which was filmed a few years ago which stated and warned about the very thing we are experiencing now. There was a lot of fault on both sides. There is fault on the part of the people for getting loans they knew they probably couldn't pay for. I'll take the wisdom of the older. I think Obama may make a good president some day, just not yet.

I am not condeming him just stating facts as I know them trying to put it all in context. I heard he is the richest man worth 57 Billion surpassing Bill Gates. Bill gates money doesn't come to me. I wouldn't want it as I don't need it. And no I am not rich. Household income hovering at 50,000 a year. I just have everything paid for and comfortable. With some patience and responsibility most americans could say the same. Instead they want to buy stuff they don't need with money they don't have.

A Veteran

Not beyond admitting that the Democrats aren't perfect. But I put the blame where blame is due. Republicans are the particulates of both the foreign policy crisis, and the current economic crisis. I read Obama's plans and they are much more formulated then McCains, and make sense. I haven't gotten any coherence from McCain he has no solutions beyond surge, and he has even less substance when it concerns economic matters. Let's end the cowboy politics and put in an self made man for president.

A Vetrean: You said:
"Thats why only 5.7 percent to charity. I see. I thought good christians were supposed to tithe 10% which would be considered charity."

Then you said:
"I did not say he was a bad christian."

Yes. Yes you did. If your grasp of English is this poor or your basic integrity this low, there just isn't any point 'debating' you. I may as well try debating what 'is' is with Bill Clinton.

Posted by: jhw539 | Nov 2, 2008 9:21:11 PM

For every 1 year a Democratic congress has failed there are 3 years of Republican congress failings. I guess that means that Republicans are more to blame by the law of simple mathematics.

Thanks for at least admitting that there was a democratic failing at all.
