Obama Calls Higher Income Taxes the Wealthy Will Pay Under His Plan ‘Chump Change’
November 03, 2008 11:01 AM
In an interview with MTV's Sway, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., was asked by a viewer -- Matt from Iowa -- "Mr. Obama, if your desire is to spread the wealth around, what incentive is there for me to try to work hard? If I am only going to get more taken away from me, the more money I make, why wouldn't I just slide into a life of relaxation and let rich people take care of me?"
Said Sway, "You know, a lot of people are asking similar questions, and I kinda want you to specify. What does this mean exactly?"
"What is amazing to me is this whole notion that somehow that everybody is just looking out for themselves," Obama said. "I mean, the fact is, we just talked about student loans. Well, when young people who have the drive and the skill to go to college can't afford to go to college, how do you think we pay for scholarships or loan programs? That money doesn't grow on trees. It's got to come from somewhere, and the attitude that I have is that, if we want to grow our economy, the way it grows is from the bottom up. You don't just give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. What you do is make sure that the tax code is fair."
He continued: "I want to give a tax cut to 95 percent of working Americans, but in order to pay for that, I'm going to take the tax rates back to what they were in the 1990s for people who are making more than a quarter of a million dollars a year. People who are making more than a quarter of a million dollars a year, if they are paying 2 or 3 percent higher in taxes, the notion that they're somehow going to stop working, or this young man is going to not want to be successful, that just doesn't make any sense. Back in the 1990s, we created more millionaires, more billionaires, because the economy was growing, everything was strong, you had at every income bracket, people were doing well. So this idea, that somehow everybody is just on their own and shouldn't be concerned about other people who are coming up behind them, that's the kind of attitude that I want to end when I am president."
Said Sway, "Just out of curiosity, for those that are being taxed that are making over $250,000 a year, how much difference would it be from how they are being taxed today?"
"Right now, they are getting taxed at 36 percent. Under Bill Clinton in the 1990s, they were being taxed at 39.6 percent. You're talking about a 3.6 percent difference, and, you know, for, you know, the average person who is making half a million, a million dollars -- people like you, Sway -- that's chump change, that's nothing. But it could make a big difference for that young person who is trying to figure out whether they can go to college or not, if we could give them more of a break or give them more scholarships or grants to go to college."
Matt did not care for that answer.
"You say that the difference between 36 percent and 39.6 percent is 'chump change,'" he responded. "But I think even people that are in that income tax bracket would disagree." Matt said that Obama claims to want to make the tax system "fair," but he said it's "unfair" to punish people who work hard.
Incidentally, how much is this "chump change"?
The Tax Policy Center says a person or family making $500,000 a year would pay $3,363 in additional income tax under the Obama plan.
A person or family making $1,000,000 a year would see their tax burden increase by $28,301 under the Obama plan.
Chump change? You be the judge.

Tax increases I left out:
1. Rate on long term capital gain increases from 15% to either 20% or 28%.
2. Estate tax exemption falls from $3.5 million to $1 million. For a person dying under the lower exemption amount this means a tax increase of about $1.4 million.
There are more tax increases in the works -- but these are probably the biggest.
So, this "chump change" business is complete BS, much like most of what we have been hearing from the O-camp.

I am not uneducated when it comes to his sermons. I think some of his sermons hit the nail on the head. But most church goers are hipocrits. Say what you will but any one that is active in a church knows it to be the truth. My claims come from how they act in the real world. research the attitudes of those people outside of the church and see if they live up to standard or if they do or act differently outside of it. I live in the heart of the deep south and am surrounded by bigotry and racism everyday, and most of it comes from races other than caucasion. I am a military brat and was very proud if my father. I grew up with many different ethnic groups. I say Obama hates america from my experiance with his book. Which i read in full, southern doesn't mean uneducated. His views on our country, things that he acttually said. And the attitude he and his wife puts off about our country. Just remember that the one true villian in the bible was the snake. I don't listen to snakes and niether should you.

Ryan C. actually the bottom 40% of the total WAGE EARNERS pay no federal income tax. It may be withheld, but they receive it all (if not more with tax credits) back in tax refunds.
The bottom 50% of the nation's wage earners only pay 2.99% of the total federal income tax.

Kevin I admire your hard work to keep your family together, but I do not admire your hateful unsubstantiated claims that Senator Obama 'hates America'.
This type of extremist nonsense serves no one.
American was fed some 'sound bites' from Reverend Wright's sermons. Sound bites specifically chosen to make him look like a DEMON. They are taken WAY out of context.
You seem like a decent fellow. Please try to watch some of the unedited sermons from Reverend Wright and do some real research. To dismiss this church as 'hateful of America' is just reckless, wrong and probably libellous.
Watch some of his complete sermons - you'll find you've been duped by the media abuse of the sound bites.

I wish we could just call this elektion off and let Bush stay another four years.
But since we can't, go McCane!!!!

This talk about 3.6% is nonsense. Here are the proposals on the table:
1. Remove the cap on Social Security tax. For a self-employed person making over about $110,000 this increases taxes by 12.9%.
2. Raise ordinarily income tax rate: 3.6%, as above.
3. Elimite reduced rate on dividends -- tax rate changes from 15% to 39.6%, a 24.6% increase.
4. Eliminate deduction for 401(k) plans (being seriously discussed by Demos). Loss of 20K + deduction.

Someone calls me an extremist? that is funny. NoBama is lying to everyone and you are all biting into it. Why did he stay in a church that is notorious for it's outrageous views on many different things. One being the hate of America. The people of that church have even been likened to the people of the Al-Quida. When you struggle for yopur money the way i do then you can say something. it is because todays americans are money hungry and belive in anyone that can GIVE them morer money. What happened to working hard for your money? What happened to taking pride in the way you live? What happened to being thankful for making your own way and not recieving handouts? Well maybe you know what is like to feel that way. But how in the heck is he going to give 95% of americans a tax break when 60% of them don't pay taxes? I work in business that cashes checks every month, 90% of them are US treasury SSI and Disability checks. they pull up to cash these 600-1500.00 checks in brand new cars and trucks. Yet they live in government housing and get welfare and foodstamps. Can you tell me how i can qualify for that? I need help! I struggle paycheck to paycheck but i survive and I work hard for my money. My wife is a 23 year old type 2 diabetic, yet there is no assistance for me no matter what i try. Because i make too much money!! Now you figure out if you can live off 20000.00 a year with rent, bills, medical expenses, and medication, not to mention food and clothes. Have a good day and try thinking outside the box.

John Doe Eastern Washington where do you get your statistics? We are nowhere near the "highest unemployment rates in history." The latest report was 6.1% unemployment.
From January 1975 through December 1975 the LOWEST unemployment rate was 8.1%.
From January 1976 through June 1977 the LOWEST unemployment rate was 7.0%.
From May 1980 through October 1981 the LOWEST unemployment rate was 7.2%.
From November 1981 through August 1982 the LOWEST unemployment rate was 8.3%.
From September 1982 through June 1983 the LOWEST unemployment rate was 10.1%.
From July 1983 through December 1985 the LOWEST unemployment rate was 7.0%.

So Richard, in Dubuque, Do you make over $250K a year? Because in Dubuque, you would REALLY stand out. And if you don't your taxes are not going to change. Welfare makes up about 1% of the Federal Budget. So who is it you don't want to give your money to? The soldiers in Iraq? The ones who have come home disabled? The ones who are going to school? The people who come when there is a flood on the Mississippi? Those guys who build the roads iand bridges in the summer? People working to try to find a cure for cancer? People who have worked all their lives and are living on less that $600 of social security a month? Those people are welcome to my tax dollars. The idea that all our tax dollars go to welfare receipients (who are, by the way, mostly white) is complete baloney.
There's alot I would like to see cut out - including a war on drugs that has accomplished nothing, abstinence-only programs which have acoomplished nothing, tax cuts for the oil companies for DRILLING, at the same time they are making record profits, sweetheart deals made with Halliburton, any money to the evaluators of the No Child Left Behind Act, the money we have given to foreign countries who hate us... but I like decent roads. And I think that the kids who come back from Iraq deserve an education.

"A person or family making $1,000,000 a year would see their tax burden increase by $28,301 under the Obama plan."
Harsh. If I were facing a tax hike like that, I'd be devastated. It'd probably take a whole case of hundred-year-old scotch and a long cruise with a yacht full of call girls to make me feel better.
Pfffft. And if Obama gets elected, I bet I can't even write off the call girls as a business expense.
Man, that blows.

If it was so important to regulate the mortgage and loan industries, and it the Republicans were so committed to it - why didn't the Republicans do it when they had control of the White House, the Congress and the Senate for SIX YEARS?

This kid Matt is just a dittohead who's never given serious thought to these issues, and who would never get into the top tax bracket under a Republican administration. If we don't make people like Matt the minority, this country will go down the same path the last 8 years, and we will collapse before the next 4 are up.

"he hates everything that is AMERICA", "has no belief in our country" . . . Kevin with these kind of unsubstantiated and hateful accusations you show yourself to be a fairly whacked out extremist. Get a grip lad.

I am proud to be an American!!! When NoBama can stand in front of me and say the same i might vote for him. But as it goes, even if he were to say that i wouldn't vote for him because he would be lying through his 10,000 dollar perfect teeth (small exageration there but you get my drift). Why in Heck would anyone vote a person in office that has no belief in our country? why would you want someone in office that has no respect for something we all love? Why would we want to elect a political figure head into office that should represent our country to the best of his ability if he hates everything that is AMERICA? And last but not least why would we want a first lady that says she has never been proud to be an american till ehr husband ran for office? All you NoBama supporters are blind and just want free money. Make your own money and be proud that you don't need help from someone who is spitting a lot of political propaganda to get in office. I see Obama as the next hitler? anyone else see it too?

Think about what Matt and people like him are saying - they are not complaining that they are making more than $250,000 now and will have to pay the additional $3,363. They are saying "what incentive do I have to make that $500,000?" Hrm. How about the extra $200,000 + that will go in your freaking pocket after taxes?!?!? Are these people really saying that they will forego making an additional $250,000 becuase they will have to pay an additional $3,363 in taxes? Really?!?! Is that how selfish we have become as a society? I find it remarkable that these conservatives have no problem condemning homosexuality and other social issues based on passages from the Old Testament, yet somehow ignore Jeses' own words at Matthew 19:21 - 24 in which he clearly states that to find favor in the Lord, one must give up all his property to the poor, as it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into the kingdom of God. And here they balk at sharing an additional 3% of profits over $250,000.

All those who are for increasing taxes on the wealthy to benefit those behind them - remember, that anyone who has a job is better off than those behind them; in fact, they could be considered wealthy by those people.
So when Obama raises your taxes to give to those behind you, remember to smile and think how good it feels to be patriotic and unselfish as you spread the wealth around.
