Obama Offers Rahm Emanuel Job of White House Chief of Staff

November 05, 2008 8:30 AM

ABC News has learned that President-elect Obama has offered the White House chief of staff job to Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill.

Emanuel, a knowledgeable source tells ABC News, has not yet given his answer. The sharp-tongued, sharp-elbowed, keenly intelligent veteran of the Clinton White House is said to have ambitions to some day be Speaker of the House. But he also has a keen sense of "duty."

Today on "Good Morning America" ABC's George Stephanopoulos reported Obama likes the fact that Emanuel "knows policy, knows politics, knows Capitol Hill" and has told associates that Emanuel would "have his back."

There is a tentative plan to announce Obama's chief of staff this week.

I've been trying to get my class a white house tour since last november. When I called all of the pre-fabricated phone numbers - they said "leave a message," and no one ever called me back. I called my congressman and I was able to book a tour of the capital bldg, but not the whitehouse. Now that I have a busload of students who really want to co to the whitehouse, I am told it is too late!!! How is this so? This is so disheartening!

Among the many countries of this world, USA is also situated in some specific place of this globe called the earth. This One Earth is consisted one family of an Humankind. Whenever he/or she would like to say "God bless America",they should also include "God bless the World as well as the whole universe" and this is the real perfect blessing for all of us.

Thanks,

May Allah Bless us all (i.e,the whole universe).

Cmon white people, stop pretending that racism wouldn't exist if it weren't for Obama. And later for all this ridiculous garbage about McCain being more qualified. Americans only scream qualifications when it comes to black males running for president.

Not only was Bush an idiot, but he wasn't morally qualified to do anything but steal from this country. And he did a masterful job of it.

No genius bothered questioning his qualifications. They just said that he was stupid. Well, Obama aint stupid!

Just accept it, Obama won because the best white candidates available were just God-Awful. If there were any better qualified white candidate they'd have won hands down. Obama won because white people voted for him, not because of the black vote.

Nothin racial about it. Stop making excuses. You lost. Introduce a better candidate and you will win.

Obama is cool.

I believe Obama will do a fine job as the President. Please refrain from commenting on him being an "empty suit" before the man even gets a chance to step into the president position. We can make the these claims after something terrible happens, but until then, he was elected president, and we live in this country, with many rights that everyone of you take for granted everyday.

This post is incredible...
This is why our country does not move forward. Because of racism like this. Rahm Emanuel is a qualified, experienced individual for this job. Why is the fact that he is not white even coming up. this is where this society is failing.
People refuse to believe that Obama was elected because of his intelligence, policy, charisma, and the ability to appeal to people from all walks of life. I can guarantee you that 53% of Americans did not vote for him because he was black. The amazing thing was that people looked passed his color and at the actual individual.
As for the fact that our country is getting dumber....WOW...we can't do worse that Bush. The world perception of the US changed over night, they have faith in our country once again.
I'm not taking anything away from McCain he is an amazing man. But if any of your pockets are not overflowing with money I have no idea why you would not vote for Obama.

The fact is that Obama did not run to be the first black president he ran to the president and he happened to be black!!!

The people have spoken
change is coming
for the first time I can say I'm proud to be an American not only a californian

I'm sorry if I broke the rules. Would puting a link to the story on the other site be against the rules too?

I just posted a message. It was a copy of a post from another site that told a story about someone's experience with Emanuel in the white house in previous years. If Bush would have done what the family of the woman who made the post saw Emanuel do in the white house, everyone would be all over it in the media.

I'm sorry, I made need to clarify that I was directing my last post toward the post made by "Naquan."

So...what are you saying? It's ok to discriminate against Mccain because of his age? The only thing that made Mccain look like Bush is the fact that he was white. If you look at his record you will see that Mccain is not George Bush! Mccain seems older in the way he carries himself because of the war injuries that he got fight for this country. But, that has nothing with his ability to use his intelligence and wisdom to run this country. Let's face the truth, Obama supporters didn't vote for Mccain because he was White man, and they voted for Obama because he was a black man. There's your change. Obama used his race to win this election because he didn't have the qualifications to be president. This will set us back in the future on the race issue. Racism toward both blacks and whites on both sides will take root in this country.

Obama being president is a good thing. If You Would of picked mccain ,This world would be under alot of stuff and then he would probably die on the job because he is 72 years old and he cant handle all that stress so ghe would probably die right in the white house, im not saying it to be rude but obama can change things and i believe that, and things cannot change until 2009 because bush is still in the white house untill 2009. to tell you the truth any president being elected is better then bush, i mean c'mon how could bush turn this worldup side down, and thier would of been a 81percent chance that if mccain was elected that this world would be more mest up then it is ,and thier is a 97PERCENT chance that obama will make change ,so do themath before you think about turning on obama.im not even older enough to vote and i know about this stuff. all yall think is hes black. SO WHAT!,him being elected hopen doors for black people. so think before you act.

peace imout

I was hoping that Obama's first press conference would give me some reassurance that yes, this man is qualified. Well...that didn't happen...I noticed that when he was speaking of living presidents, he could only think of one, Clinton, then he made a pot shot joke at Nancy Reagan! Classy! What an egomaniac!

Also, he says "um" too much. Like um every um other um word. This man is an empty suit. We just voted for a president like we voted for the next American Idol. What a sad commentary for our country.

Posted by: readytopuke | Nov 8, 2008 11:11:58 AM

I just thought I would share my views on the next four years.

Mccain was more qualified to be president than Obama. The fact that people voted for Obama to see a black man become president is going to set us back in this country on the race issue. Give it some time and you'll see. When people start feeling the strain and losing what they have because of Obama's decisions, then the first thing they are going to do is get mad and remember he was elected because he was black and hate towards blacks will reignite. The whole world sees Obama as a Black Man. Not just a man, or leader, but Black Man and Obama set it up that way. Obama got the job as president by national affirmative action. By appointing Emanuel, he showed us where his loyalties lie first. I used to work with two people from the middle east who will tell you that if you are an Israeli citizen, then your loyalty is to Israel first. He's a duel citizen and a national security risk. I also have friends from India who are laughing right now. One of them actually said to me, "Only in America, could this happen..you know that right."
If you read my earlier post you will see, Obama is going to have a very negative affect on my family with his leadership, and many others as well. Obama has been put so high up on a world pedastel that his ego is now going to dictate how he does his job. The moment he doesn't do what other countries want him to do, he's going to tumble off that pedastal in eyes of the world and American Citizens are going to pay for it. Everything that happens over the next four years that burdens all Americans is going to be identified with the fact that Obama is black, because everyone made an issue out of wanting him to be elected because he was black. Racism begins again. It would be different if obama had been elected because he was qualified for the position. Resume to Resume, Mccain was the most qualified.

I never saw color until I was in the sixth grade. A little african american girl liked a folder that I got from my stepmothers office to do a project. She asked me if I could get her one. I told her sure, just give me a call tonight and remind me. Well my father was the biggest racist I've ever known and he answered the phone and knew she was black because of the tone of her voice. I don't know what he said to her, but I could not longer look at her from shame from that day on. My father was so mad at me that I thought he was going to kill me over giving my phone number to someone of color. I swore at that moment that I would never raise my children to hate and I'd never be like my father. I'd never see color before that day. She was my friend, not my colored friend.

I don't want to be seen as a "white" woman. I want to be seen as a woman. Obama has just shown everyone in the world color, including the many in this country who were raised to not see color. When that sinks in to people and he starts making decisions and "changing" our lives in ways that make life more difficult on us then, I fear how the people of this country are going to "change." There will probably be racism on both sides unlike we have ever seen in this country. This election has deeply divided our country, only you're not hearing about because it's not correct to speak out about it. Since this election started, the media has been extremely biased and pro Obama. They helped him get elected, and were unfair to Mccain. But no one was allowed to say anything negative about Obama. If Brittany Spears' background and associations had been like Obamas, the media would have ripped her apart in the news.

I saw two men, two men running for office, not a black man and a white man.

I am a registered democrat. You should know that I encouraged my two college age kids to vote with their own mind and for the person they felt was best for the job. I did express my concerns, but I stood beside youngest daughter at the poll and told her to use her own mind. Both of my children voted for Obama, and I wouldn't have tried to pressure them any other way. I didn't agree, but as a parent, I had to step back. In time, they will learn how thier vote affects their quality of life. Both me and my husband voted for Mccain. We have a family to manage and provide for, and we have responsibilites to support our children. Every decision we make is to keep our heads above water and meet the needs of our children. With the realities of all these responsibilites and experience in the real world that the young people of today don't have, we had to vote for the most qualified person for president.

Whatever America wants America gets, and later on they pay for their stupidity, yet they never learn.

That's right! I "said" it.

Truthbetold:
"As far as race goes, I don't think JS realizes that the chief of staff pick is white... that people are protesting because the man is a Clinton crony and deeply partisan and does not represent change or bipartisanship. JS just assumes people are racist because that's what Obama told JS Medgurl, I don't know anyone in politics who doesn't think that Obama won the Democratic nomination because of his race, not in spite of it. If he weren't part black we would have had Hilary Clinton as the Dem nominee. That is not racist, just facts. He is far too inexperienced and far to left to have won over Hilary without the race factor. We have to get over calling people racist when they disagree or site facts that we don't like. Obama is criticized for the things he supports, votes for, espouses and it has nothing to do with his race, and yet people are called racist right and left. That's not healing the nation. Some of you were duped by the cult of personality, by pretty speeches written by someone else but spoken by Obama. All you have to do is look at his chief of staff pick to know he's not for change or bi partisanship. If you looked at records McCain is much more bipartisan than Obama has ever been, so if you wanted bipartisan.. If you look at record and you wanted spending cuts, you wanted McCain who has actually enacted them, if you want lower taxes, McCain has a much better record, face it, you fell for a pretty face and a pretty speech and now you have buyers remorse and want everyone to support him and act nice. Good Luck"

Amen, that folks is spot on, dead eye. We are NOT racists, we disagree with policies, records and speeches. When you can digest that then we can talk. So far the only "CHANGE" I have seen is in my 401K and it ain't a good change!

To quote our soon to be "First Lady" (how that makes me sick) "This is the first time in my adult life that I am " (ending quote for a moment) NOT (resume quote)" proud of my country" I suppose she didn't say that, George Bush must have. Do worry Gail, you aren't the only one who will be labeled as such. Pretty sad when someone actually makes an intelligent effort to get the facts, weigh those facts against each other and make an informed judgment, is called a racist. While someone who votes for the "black guy" just because they want to see a "black guy" in office is smart and intelligent! Give me a break! Welcome to the dumbing down of the U.S.A....Ooops, I mean U.S.S.A....we're screwed!!!

This is just amazing how we as people look at some of the stupidest things to judge a person. I didn't like either of the candidates but one had to be chosen. One, O'bama for his no experience and two, McCain for having the same fundamental views as bush. If any body says Palin was qualified for Vice, get real. She doesn’t have a clue of what she be talking about but she do gives generic answers that any 10-year old would say. I have to say this leave the skin color because that's all it is. The color of our skin doesn’t make us better than the next person. I always said if a black person or other race than white is not a person. Then body, blood of another race should not be able to integrate with a white person. Our bodies are perfectly the same of than the shade of our skin and the region of our ancestors. Plus, we all except the Indians are visitors of this country anyway. Republicans eyes are wide shut for they can see that Bush is the worst President ever and have completely destroyed this country values. But because he's a republican he's ok, it's alright. Obama surely can't do any worst. So what the Chief of Staff was born in another country, so what, he has been a great job for this country and most likely more than you, (the ones that complains but isn't doing anything for the country but complaining). We need to get over this color of a person skin and move on. White is not dominant nor is black. If you think so and you believe in God and his son Jesus Christ (which is a Jew) how could you think you are dominant? Since there was one Adam and Eve damn we all must be one. A Heaven with one race!!!! Wake up people and let support each other regardless of the color of your skin or nationality and MOVE ON.

My friends are: An extremely smart British gentleman, two women from India who have fought to be acknowledged for most of their life, two african american men, and one American woman. I am a registered democrat. My entire childhood and most of my adulthood, I have been referred to as white trash. I didn't vote for Obama because his policies hurt my family. My two daughters did. I told them that they should vote for who they felt was right inspite of how I felt. It bothers me that many people voted for Obama for no other reason than he was black. The majority of the people I have talked to have said to me that they want to see a black man become president so thats why they voted for him. Race was not a factor in my decision. I put all of John Mccain's resume and accomplishments next to Obamas and Mccain was more qualified for the position. I know that people will now discriminate against me because I didn't vote Obama. I will automatically be labeled a racist.

Posted by: Gail | Nov 6, 2008 3:10:18 PM

Why does everyone automatically assume a person is racist if they disagree with Obama's stance? I'm just curious with this one. I did not like either candidate, but I especially did not like Obama's promises.

I guess I need to go home and tell my African American husband and my bi-racial children that I'm racist.

There goes our national security. The world thinks Americans are idiots. Now..I see why. At least the 47 million or so who voted for Obama are. The fact that his new chief of staff is a duel citizen should disqualify him from being in office. He served in the Isreali Army after he stayed in America. His background is as sketchy as Obamas, but all anyone cares about is race. I'm happy people feel that Obama has help the race issue in America. I am totally against racisim. However, When it comes to this country, I care about our security, and things that affect our people. America needs to focus on itself and stay out of other peoples business. Obama's going to give other countries 50 billion dollars in aid. Of course, they love us. What better way for Obama to stay up on his world pedestal than to appoint a citizen of Isreal to a key position. Why don't he just hand him our national book of secrets. I'm at the lower end of the middle class sector of this country. I survive on social security and medicare. Because Obama has put in his health care plan that he will cut subsidies to Medicare advantage plans, I've been informed by my insurance company that I will pay 26% more for my medical care next year. I'm a disabled American. I get 590 dollars a month from social security. I will now have to pay out 230 dollars of that toward my health care cost. I got two kids in college and a husband who is a blue collar construction worker. As soon as Obama was elected, my husband's boss informed him that if Obama mandated his company to pay any money for Obama's policies, then his 40 man company will lose a significant amount of people to pay for it. I thought he was suppose to look out for the little people. It's only going to get worse. He should be doing what's best for this country and our people. He should protect our national security, and keep our money in our country helping our people. For all those who voted for him and those who are rejoicing about the end of racisim, you got what you wanted, but the 47 million people who didn't vote for Obama didn't. They are people jsut like me and my family. That's the problem with America. Everybody wants what they want at the expense of other people. No one ever things about how their actions will affect other people. I've never made a decision in my life without thinking about how my decision will affect others.
