Obama Sends Condolences to Families of American Victims in Mumbai

November 27, 2008 2:11 PM

President-elect Barack Obama and wife Michelle released a statement on Friday, expressing their sympathies for the American victims of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

"Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the American citizens who lost their lives in the outrageous terrorist attacks in Mumbai," the statement said. "These terrorists who targeted innocent civilians will not defeat India's great democracy, nor shake the will of a global coalition to defeat them. The United States must stand with India and all nations and people who are committed to destroying terrorist networks, and defeating their hate-filled ideology."

Obama once again reasserted that there is only one president and thanked the Bush administration for keeping him updated.

"There is one president at a time. I will continue to closely monitor the situation on the ground in Mumbai, and am grateful for the cooperation of the Bush Administration in keeping me and my staff updated. We fully support the Bush Administration's efforts to protect American citizens and assist the government of India during this tragic time," Obama said.

On Thanksgiving morning, an Obama aide told ABC News, President-elect Barack Obama spoke by phone with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, receiving additional briefings on Wednesday's Mumbai terrorist attacks, which have left more than 150 people dead and hundreds more wounded.

Additionally, said the Obama aide, the President-elect received an intelligence briefing on the attacks in the India coastal city.

Along with the updates from Rice, Obama is also getting regular situational updates from the State Department Ops Center and the National Counter Terrorism Center.

"He continues to monitor the situation closely and appreciates the cooperation and information sharing from the Administration," said the aide.

The Thanksgiving conversation marked the second time that Obama and Rice have talked since the coordinated attacks in India's financial capital.

On Wednesday evening, Obama called Rice to get an update on the situation.

The President-elect also called Indian Ambassador Ronan Sen.

According to an Obama aide, the President-elect "conveyed that his thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this tragic situation."

"He said that there is just one president at a time. He also told him that he is monitoring the situation and has been in communication with Secretary Rice."

The Obama Transition Team also established a team to interact with the State Department Ops Center and with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Amb. Wendy Sherman, an Obama Transition Team aide focused on the State Department, is part of that.

The Bush Administration has, an Obama aide said, "helpfully provided regular updates through several channels."

On Wednesday night, Obama Transition foreign policy aides Denis McDonough and Mark Lippert also briefed the President-elect, who is spending the holiday with 60 family members at his residence in Chicago.

Im sorry we had how many attacks PRIOR to Bush taking office. Hands up Please. How may attacks after 9/11? Hands up please? Most Dems are cowards. ie. Vietnam. They like their freedom but nobody elses. 3000 people died. Never forget that you lilly livered, weak kneed (cant we just get along) uneducated in world history whiners. You got your president comming up, IN January. The most unqualified individual to EVER hold the office. God help us all. Finally a socialist in office to remind the 30's something exactly how well things go when we have a limp wrist in office. He will be our president like it or not so i will him well.

If Bush did something you would complain, if he doesn't do anything you complain. All you whining woosies will be crying in your cheerios when Obama doesn't change your diapers and burp you after 1/09.

"kat: I will let anyone reading decide for themselves the value of your implication that the terrorist attack was in any way meant to test Obama in light of the fact that he does not actually take office for another two months."

JHW- I see you're referring to the earlier reference to Joe Biden, who said that Obama would be tested soon internationally. In lieu of the Mumbai attacks, it was an accurate prediction. The terrorist attacks in Mumbai could clearly destabilize relations between Pakistan and India, if the funding and training for the Indian militants did indeed come from Pakistan. It's a very tenuous situation, not likely to be resolved anytime soon. You can only speculate on the source and reasoning behind the attacks , which are still ongoing. Again, I don't think the international repercussions from the Mumbai acts of terrorism are leaving us anytime soon.

bush is still the president

Posted by: sugar | Nov 28, 2008 9:03:52 AM

it should have been bush doing the press conferences,(we have four years of obama on the tv) I for one would have liked to see bush, just on this one last stroke, try and do something for the american people.
maybe it could have redeemed him a little bit.
i guess i am saying it would have been better for bush to try and go out in some type of style, instead of taking the punk way out.

Yes, we only have one president at a time, but it seems that Bush and Obama are in total communication during the transition. At this time there are so many critical issues and President Bush has decided to keep President-Elect Obama up to date on everything. It seems to me President Bush is being most cooperative and President Elect-Obama reminds us daily that we are a nation of one President at the time. What is the problem with that? When both parties are in disagreement we complain, when both parties agree, we complain. WHAT EXACTLY DO SOME OF YOU WANT? It appears this nation is working on unity, I for one would like to see that happen.

ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION:

The Democrats were elected to fix this economy and withdraw our troops from Iraq. They were not elected to grant amnesty to illegal aliens. We must stop the Democrats and Senator Barack Obama. We elected Senator Barack Obama and he has to do what we want: WE DO NOT WANT TO GRANT AMNESTY TO ILLEGAL ALIENS. PERIOD. WE WILL FIGHT THIS ONE. ILLEGAL ALIENS MUST NOT RECEIVE HELP FROM THE FEDS OR STATES. SENATOR BARACK OBAMA AND HIS STAFF MUST ENFORCE CURRENT IMMIGRATION LAWS. IF THEY DO NOT, NEXT ELECTIONS THEY WILL NOT WIN.

Jerry Rogers,

I would have to disagree that the Republicans know how to handle the issue of terrorism.

It was supremely foolish to invade the wrong country, leave over a million of their citizens dead, and thus breeding resentment among many of the dead's family members to join the insurgency. I would be pretty furious if some country dropped a bomb on my brother's wedding and blew everybody to smithereens.

Isolating countries like Iran instead of attempting to engage them was also the wrong approach. Writing a cheque for US$1 (or was it ten?) billion to Pakistan without attaching stipulations that they should go after the terrorists more vigorously was also another blunder.

Oh, and Keith, Bush seems pretty absent. He's been in hiding and has hardly said anything to attempt to reassure the nation in the financial crisis. If W isn't going to say anything, I'd rather Obama did. Plus, I reckon the Indians (and the rest of the world for that matter) like the soon to be 44th President of the United States alot more then the incumbent.

And those of you still flogging your ridiculous argument that Obama was born in Kenya, please ask yourselves a simple question. Why on EARTH would a heavily pregnant woman travel to Kenya in the 1960s? There was quite a bit of unrest then and I doubt that there were, cheap, regular flights to Kenya.

At least he's consulting with the party who knows what to do with terrorists. Otherwise he and his Clinton cabintet choices wouldn't have a clue. Look what happened the last time a democrat was left to handle a terrorist situation. The USS Cole and 9/11, and a missed opportunity to nab Bin Laden. And where did we end up? Iraq and Afghanistan. And what did Bill Clinton do? He called in his national sexcurity advisor Lewinski in for another Oval office conference. Good thing Obama is good with the economic issues, because he hasn't got a clue as to how to lead a military force in any way, shape, or form.

I think George Bush needs to stand up and make it VERY clear and in no uncertain terms that he's still the president until January 20th and he doesn't have to be nice about it! Obama is NOT the president yet!

Posted by: carlyonsue | Nov 28, 2008 3:52:19 AM

I think both Obama and Bush are handling this transition period well.

Posted by: Bill in NC | Nov 28, 2008 3:43:01 AM

Obama should be talking to Michelle, not Miss Rice.

Posted by: JOE | Nov 28, 2008 3:39:27 AM

Keith,

Just be realistic.
Who is the leader of America now?
Since nov. 4th, Nobody bothers about Bush except die-hard Bushites.

"Obama does not take office until Jan 20th. This guy - George Bush I think he's called - is still President and still quite in power. Which makes your comment look rather... uninformed at best."

JHW- Do you think the consequences and implications of the terroristic acts in Mumbai is going to be over by Jan. 20, 2009? Which makes your comment look short sighted at best.

Posted by: kat | Nov 28, 2008 12:45:33 AM

We're gonna be in Afghanistan for years.

blah blah blah blah blah -- of course obama is speaking to rice! this is what the transition is all about. bush probably asked rice to keep obama posted on EVERYTHING!

the important facts that we ALL should be concerned with is that Bin Ladin's plan to disable the Western world is working -- hit the financial markets -- cripple the economy -- get people hungry! then you can conquer the mass and make them submit to your beliefs.

bin ladin's greatest fear is that we Americans will unite under the threats instead of tear each other apart. won't he be surprised!

we AND our new administration have much work to do. let's get rolling!

Condi Rice intelligence briefing to Obama: "Watch World News Tonight"

Posted by: Angel | Nov 27, 2008 10:18:23 PM

While I didn't vote for him, I do appreciate that he is staying informed and doing his best to have a good start to his term on several fronts, God knows we need one.

Bush, regardless of his intentions is useless, not just because he is incompetent, but because the world is SO ready to move on.

kat: "Didn't Joe Biden, the "loquacious blue hen;" say not too long ago that Obama would face foreign policy challenges in an immediate manner upon taking office? "

Obama does not take office until Jan 20th. This guy - George Bush I think he's called - is still President and still quite in power. Which makes your comment look rather... uninformed at best.
