Obama's Presser
November 07, 2008 4:39 PM
President-elect Obama came before the cameras today to talk about the economy, the state of which -- we learned today with new unemployment numbers -- is even worse than he'd anticipated.
He delivered a statement:
And he took some questions. Most were on the economy, but I asked one on foreign policy:
TAPPER: Senator, for the first time since the Iranian Revolution, a president of Iran sent a congratulations note to a new U.S. president. I'm wondering, first of all, if you responded to President Ahmadinejad’s note of congratulations. And second of all and more importantly, how soon do you plan on sending low-level envoys to countries such as Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, to see if a presidential-level talk would be productive?
PRESIDENT-ELECT OBAMA: I am aware that the letter was sent. Let me state -- repeat what I stated during the course of the campaign. Iran's development of a nuclear weapon, I believe, is unacceptable. And we have to mount a international effort to prevent that from happening. Iran's support of terrorist organizations, I think, is something that has to cease. I will be reviewing the letter from President Ahmadinejad. And we will respond appropriately. It's only been three days since the election. Obviously how we approach and deal with a country like Iran is not something that we should, you know, simply do in a knee jerk fashion. I think we've got to think it through. But I have to reiterate once again that we only have one president at a time. And I want to be very careful that we are sending the right signals, to the world as a whole, that I am not the president and I won't be until January 20th.
More to come later on World News with Charlie Gibson and Nightline.

Jake;
Congrats on being able to ask a question at the first press conference, it was a good one too.

And, hey, Obama...quit copying from Bush...2nd stimulus package, huh? Well, who gave us the first one?

Supporters of republicans have absolutely no credibility to argue against Obama or his decisions as of now. Good grief, he hasn't even taken office yet. These are the same people that gave unwavering support to Bush and republicans as they took us to war, looted the treasury and mismanaged our resources. They need to shut up, sit back and watch how intelligent adults handle the nation's business.

Jon from Chicago ,Nov 7, VERY well said!

Why don't you people let up on "Concerned in Ohio"? Never heard of the concept of the loyal opposition? Obama gets elected and everyone must fall in line immediately and bless his every proposal, regardless of his or her own political/economic/ social philosophy?
The "what would McCain do" sneers are particularly silly. I read post after post during the election from many of you asserting that McCain had no economic plan, even though many of us, including Concerned, posted just as often outlining specifics of his proposal. So, yes, McCain did have an economic plan he would have implemented upon election. The nation instead chose Obama, so it is his plan that will be implemented. That's the way the system works.
I have watched for the last 8 years as President Bush has been vilified on a daily basis. Even before 9/11, there was vitriol in the air. After the war on terror began in earnest, things got even uglier in the blogosphere, on the airwaves, in public discourse in general. There's even a handy name for the "the man can do nothing right" rabid hatred of him by many on the left-- Bush Derangement Syndrome. So please don't lecture Concerned on how everyone must be loyal to our new president-elect. I do not see anything Concerned has written as particularly hateful or meanspirited. S/he simply does not agree with Obama's programs and principles and is expressing, well, concern. That is his/her right.
There was a striking Stone Soup cartoon a week or so ago that sticks in my mind and seems appropriate here. A teenager asks her mother whether liberals or conservatives are more open-minded. Her mother responds, "People are generally open-minded about ideas they already agree with." Truer words, as the saying goes...

Jake, your question was lame.
What did you expect him to say? "Gee Jake I have an Axis of evil brunch all set up tomorrow with a Latin American marxist dictator happy hour to follow at five. Thanks for asking."
It's time to get serious, time to think for yourself instead of reading RNC talking points to Obama to see if he stumbles in his reply. That's for the election. Election's over. Formulate your own questions - preferably ones that are not as foolish as that one.

jwench,
we must all realize now, "concerned in ohio" does not like obama, does not see obama president.
con. in ohio will never be happy again until obama leaves office in eight years,
everyone should just remember that when reading concerned in ohio comments.
and that is cio' right to
dislike obama, get on this site and knock everything he does.
we will just have to know that is concerned in ohio' job from now on

MM, this might surprise you, but some people think another stimulus package is just throwing good money after bad. That giving billions to the auto industry isn't a good idea. Raising taxes during a recession isn't a good idea either.
I know it's crazy, but some people don't think what he has said will work. Those people, like me, actually think they'll be disastrous.

Concerned in Oh,
You like to bash Obama a lot. Tell me what McCain would have done or you for that matter to get us back on track . You seem to think you have all the answers to everything.

re: 'Dissent is patriotic'
oh,.. you mean now it's patriotic as opposed to the last 8 years........
- so.....'Concerned'........ lets hear your economic plan to remedy the last 8 years of Bush...
I mean besides saying that 3 days after he was elected and not really Pres 'till jan 20, that everything is going to be 2x worse than Bush...
lets hear the big plan......

I think you should have asked your tarmac question about the bailout. That was a much better question. He was probably thinking about answering it, since you had a crack at it a few days ago, and that's why he called on you.
Really, the Iran thing was kind of off topic Jake.

perfros,
you mean LOOTED and PLUNDERED the govt.
bush and co. invaded a country,
and with cheney, proceeded to steal this govt. and what was and is left of iraq. halliburton, the security forces.
it is a crying shame,
and absolute disgrace to humanity, what this govt. has done over the last eight years.
for some people who the american people gave the priv. of so called serving them.
they hurt the american people the most.

Jake did well, and so did Obama. I am proud of both of them. I hope that this administration will be much more available to the press than was the last one.

I was hoping that with President-Elect Obama's landslide victory, one of the first things on the agenda would be to ban the use of the non-word 'presser' when refering to press releases and press conferences. With the election of Obama, we're grown up now, so please stop the dumbing down of Americans.

Right wingers on here have already begun carping over two jokes. Had they had any sense of priorities . .. perhaps this wouldn't have happened.
Here's how the Republicans ran the government.
REPUBLICAN GOVERNMENT
$421 Billion OVER BUDGET (2002)
$555 Billion OVER BUDGET (2003)
$596 Billion OVER BUDGET (2004)
$554 Billion OVER BUDGET (2005)
$574 Billion OVER BUDGET (2006)
This includes RECORD overspending.
And the Republicans had the nerve during the election to try to label the Democrats as "overspenders of your hard earned tax dollars".
Is it any wonder they drove both the public spending and finances into the ditch?

MM,
You are not being a particularly gracious supporter of your candidate, now our president-elect. For example, you snark that McCain had no plans. That is demonstrably false. You might not have agreed with his plans, but he had them. Many of us liked them. For example, I liked his energy plan and was reluctantly supportive of his mortgage plan.
I keep being told that since my candidate lost, I need to exhibit maturity and support the winner. I am doing that. But, as Concerned in Ohio pointed out, those of us who sometimes disagree with specific plans of the president-elect are NOT necessarily being rabidly partisan and are CERTAINLY NOT being racist. Give it a rest. We can still disagree with things in this country, right?
That's not the same as being disagreeable-- which you are being, it seems to me.

Mariann Pepitone,
I don't think that Hillary will be considered for a position in the White House, now that the chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee will be available.
Posted by: Flash Override | Nov 7, 2008 8:29:17 PM
I agree with Tim. The Iranians smell weakness. These will be interesting times - and not in the good sense, I am afraid. Nothing racist about that: the Iranians smelled weakness with Jimmy Carter. As did others. And others will with BHO.

Good question, Jake, and I thought it got a good answer as well. I would like to have seen more questions, period. But it's a good start.
See, not everyone in the loyal opposition is in attack mode every moment. That's unnecessary and unproductive anyway. Let's continue to watch and learn about our president-elect and hope that he will do an excellent job once he is sworn in.
I'm glad he made a point of saying we only have one president at a time. I wish more of his supporters would remember that and remember he doesn't get sworn in until January.

FlashForward,
What WMD? This kind of stupid crap has got to stop. Iran does not have WMD and they are NOT the nuclear threat in the Middle East.
Posted by: Flash Override | Nov 7, 2008 8:22:52 PM
There should be no tolerance, yet dialogue, with a country who conducts terror and murders civilians with intentions to decimate a sovereign nation or any other so called "infidel" society. Take out Iran's WMD or we may see the very worst yet to come.
