Republicans to Try Burning Obama on Coal

November 02, 2008 3:23 PM

“I’m calling on behalf of John McCain and the RNC to tell you that coal jobs, which are so important to our community are in jeopardy,” says the robocall being made to voters in Pennsylvania and Ohio, among other coal-producing states.

Continues the robocall: “Listen to Barack Obama's plans to bankrupt the coal industry.”

The call then plays this quote from Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.: "So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.”

You can listen to the robocall HERE.

The quote comes from a January 2008 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle; the Obama campaign says the quote is being “wildly” taken out of context, that in the full interview Obama praises coal and says that the idea of eliminating coal is “an illusion.”

“The line they pulled out is in the context of cap and trade program,” says an Obama spokesperson. “The point Obama is making is that we need to transition from coal burning power plants built with old technology to plants built with advanced technologies -- and that is exactly the action that will be incentivized under a cap and trade program.”

Is it being taken unfairly out of context? You be the judge. Here’s the entirety of Obama’s remarks:

“I voted against the Clear Skies Bill. In fact, I was the deciding vote -- despite the fact that I’m a coal state and that half my state thought that I had thoroughly betrayed them. Because I think clean air is critical and global warming is critical.

“But this notion of no coal, I think, is an illusion. Because the fact of the matter is, is that right now we are getting a lot of our energy from coal. And China is building a coal-powered plant once a week. So what we have to do then is figure out how can we use coal without emitting greenhouse gases and carbon. And how can we sequester that carbon and capture it. If we can’t, then we’re gonna still be working on alternatives.

“But ... let me sort of describe my overall policy. What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade policy in place that is as aggressive if not more aggressive than anyone out there. I was the first call for 100 percent auction on the cap and trade system. Which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases that was emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants are being built, they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted-down caps that are imposed every year.

“So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted. That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel, and other alternative energy approaches. The only thing that I’ve said with respect to coal -- I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as an ideological matter, as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it, that I think is the right approach. The same with respect to nuclear. Right now, we don’t know how to store nuclear waste wisely and we don’t know how to deal with some of the safety issues that remain. And so it’s wildly expensive to pursue nuclear energy. But I tell you what, if we could figure out how to store it safely, then I think most of us would say that might be a pretty good deal.

“The point is, if we set rigorous standards for the allowable emissions, then we can allow the market to determine and technology and entrepreneurs to pursue, what the best approach is to take, as opposed to us saying at the outset, here are the winners that we’re picking and maybe we pick wrong and maybe we pick right.”

When Obama poses a hypothetical “if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant” (meaning a traditional, dirty-coal plant), right-wing zealots take it as a given, as if there is no choice but to build it. But who in their right mind would want to build a new dirty coal plant at this point in time? And who in their right mind would back those who would attempt to build such a plant? Do they really want our skies to start looking like China’s again?

I have had a good laugh reading the rantings of the idiots who support McPhalin. As their dreams of empire started to slip out of their grasp they resorted to doing and saying anything that might turn things around. McCain and Palin are just the "front office" for the continuation of the neocon empire agenda, the agenda that they hoped would lead them to total world domination. It just did not work out for them in their version of reality. They have now come to recognize their limitations and also, they have finally come to the realization that the rest of humanity were not going to stand idly by and watch a set of greedy people corral, for themselves, all the resources on the planet. Their is only so much that people will put up with and the American people have began to find their voice. For too long we have held our peace, but what the lunatics have been getting away with has finally got our backs up. We'll begin to speak in one coherent voice tomorrrow.

Obama's social experiment ... or, should I say Socialist experiment, will bring America to it's knees! America has more coal than any other country in the world. Coal is one of America's greatest natural resources, and our most abundant source of fuel. Our economy and our National Security is extremely intertwined with coal. We should be supporting and promoting clean coal. The thought that Obama would possibly bankrupt our coal industry is scary. Obama's 20 year history of embracing radical ideas, radical people and radical change to our country allows this candidate with virtually no experience, to gamble with our constitution, our economy, our national security, and our future. Keep America safe and prosperous, ... Elect McCain/Palin on November 4th !!!

Mmmmm...McCain and Palin...

more "Republican philosophy", meaning:

more presidential signing statements...

more "unitary executive" thinking...

more "executive privilege" escapes from justice...

more of the "voodoo economics" that's served us so well for the last eight years...

mmmmmmmmmm........

Elizabeth Dole tactics!!!

Posted by: Dell Burgess | Nov 3, 2008 12:30:17 PM

Conservatives are liars, they hate the environment, they hate fuel efficiency standards, they want the coal plants to be built without existing coal-scrubbing technology which at least takes a little of the edge off of coal, Conservative nonsense isnt popular so they lie and see how many lies they can get away with.

Another attempt to misquote what was said and turn it into a smear.A pathetic attempt by a desperate group of losers.Where does it say anything in the following statement about bankrupting the coal industry??It is the power company that builds it that he is talking about-use clean coal or pay!!
Obama will eliminate coal after he takes all your guns duh!!
"So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.”"

Hey Tree Hugger!

If you want to see a dictatorship, just wait! If Obama IS ELECTED, AND THE SENATE AND HOUSE ARE CONTROLLED BY DEMOCRATS, OBAMA WILL BECOME A DICTATOR.

Thank God, Joe Biden won't be the President because he can't go two days without sticking his foot in his mouth! On second thought, maybe that isn't a bad thing, because he wouldn't be able to talk with his foot in his mouth!

OBAMA AND BIDEN ARE JOKES!!!

ELECT MCCAIN/PALIN AND YOU WILL HAVE FAIR REPRESENTATIVES IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!

Posted by: Ohio Coal Man | Nov 3, 2008 11:29:37 AM

I'd rather hug a tree than a load of coal any day. (By the way, coal is made of ancient trees with the life all squeezed out of them.) All you boneheads keep voting in the ultra right wing fascists will get what you deserve - a military dictatorship. I grew up in the 40's and 50's - I can assure you that coal pollution and filth is no way to live - at ANY price. Have a nice gasp or two - until YOUR dictators take away the very air you breathe.

Posted by: Tree Hugger | Nov 3, 2008 11:05:32 AM

Yes, I think the issue isn't that he was misquoted so much - though taking one or two lines without the context it was in is misleading - but that McCain also favors the exact cap and trade program as Obama. He's just too sneaky and underhanded to tell his constituents the truth about what will happen if they refuse to clean up their acts - until after the election.

Obama is the "antí-Kennedy"!

John Kennedy said "ask not what your country can do for, but ask what you can do for your country"! John McCain and Sarah Palin have served their country in admirable ways. Obama has "served" his country by becoming friends with every terrorist and anti-semite he can! His early "education" (indoctrination) was in Indonesia where he learned about the Muslim "faith" and is a product of that radicalism!!

OBAMA IS A JOKE AND A FRIEND OF TERRORISTS!!!

Posted by: Ohio Coal Man | Nov 3, 2008 10:33:17 AM

STOP THE OBAMANATION OF OUR COUNTRY!!!!!
I am so tired of all you LEFT WING NUTS just regurgitating the same old crap that the fly-by-media news CNN, MSNBC, ABC ,CBS keep reporting not one of those groups will air a report that shows McCain/Palin in a favorable light. They continue to dismiss all of the facts that Obama is nothing but a liar and a cheat and he has stolen this election.
Just doing a little research you can see that while a state senator Barrack Hussein Obama’s Voting record was nothing but yes yes yes to raise taxes, start more welfare projects and in effect has ruined the economy of the state of Illinois. They are 42nd of 50 in education, the third or forth in highest debt for a state. So what do you think he will do to our total economy!!
Poor Hillary and I am not a supporter of hers but she was railroaded and had her nomination stolen from her but that goes back to the stupid way the dems decide on a candidate but just do a little research and you will see how he stole the nomination from her. ie….. his supporters locking the doors early at the caucuses and bringing bus loads of supports from other areas and allowing them to vote.
If we elect this man I am leaving this great country and so will many others including those that own companies that employee many of us or they will just go out of business because spreading the wealth around leaves no monies for expansion!

Obama going down the Coal Chute.

Shall we say Coalgate 8)

As the say at McDonalds, I am loving it.

Who needs terrorists, when we have Obama who will do their dirty work right from the White House if elected. Just say No to the fraud. Funny how everything about this guy seems to be surpressed, and the media won't even bother to report. This election cycle has been a complete disgrace.

Posted by: tred | Nov 3, 2008 10:10:01 AM

Maybe Obama will be the best President, because he doesn't have any judgment! If he had to vote "present" 134 times in the Illinois Senate BECAUSE HE COULDN'T FIGURE OUT IF HE WAS FOR OR AGAINST LEGISLATION, and never introduced any legislation in the U.S. Senate he will be too enamored with himself that he won't do anyting as President! That would be the best thing he could do for our Country! It is so obvious that he is an empty suit that he did nothing in the U.S. Senate before starting to run for President. If he had gotten ANYTHING done in the Senate, maybe he could say he was qualified to be President. And this is the guy who has never reached across the Aisle and he says he is going to end partianship as President??

Obama is A JOKE!!

There are two points which are important in this article.

1) Obama did say that under his plan, a company would bankrupt itself if it tried to open a coal powered plant, due to the increased fees he would impose on that operation. This is completely in context with the entire statement. He is not opposed to coal, he just wants to tax it so high that know one could afford to operate it.

2) This is laughable...
"The point is, if we set rigorous standards for the allowable emissions, then we can allow the market to determine and technology and entrepreneurs to pursue, what the best approach is to take, as opposed to us saying at the outset, here are the winners that we’re picking and maybe we pick wrong and maybe we pick right."

O-man thinks that by taxing and levying huge fees against power companies, he is creating a fair market. The actions will do the opposite of allowing the markets to create the best answer. His plan would create a "market" in which the only result will be much higher prices for energy. We won't pursue more oil, and we will tax the hell out of coal. So now, our tried and true energy sources will have to compete with very expensive and untested "alternative" sources.

I have an idea... why don't we create incentives for companies to develop new technologies, rather than creating barriers in the market for exsisting ones?!!! Hmmm, sounds reasonable... oh wait, that would be viewed as a tax break to energy companies.

Just listen to the audio of Obama and decide for yourself what is best for you.

Obviously tree-huggers and coal-miners will have differing feelings about this. (Obviously, people invested in the cola industry and people who pay electric bills will also be affected).

I for one see the second coming of J.C. -- and I'm not talking about the Messiah -- I'm talking about Jimmy Carter. 14% inflation. 19% 30 year mortgage. Remember the energy crisis? -- it wasn't just about gas prices -- it was about gas shortage! Get ready and hold on tight for the years ahead!

Posted by: scecil | Nov 3, 2008 9:24:17 AM

come on Don! It wasn't McCain mentioning drilling that dropped prices...it was american's CONSERVING. We drove billions of fewer miles from June to August. If you want to drop prices...CONSERVE. It's MUCH faster than increasing supply the other way. Check the actual numbers rather than your ubermaster's daily talking points.

My GAAWD the idiocy in this campaign! MAKE IT STOP

"To all those who are bashing Obama's remarks are we reading the same article? If so you might want to check your IQ level! You are really not able to process information and you making very stupid inferences. Grow up. Elevate the debate."

Why is it every time the Dems have their back to the wall the only thing they can think of to protect themselves is to pull out the "stupid Republican" card???? Have you nothing more "intelligent" to argue?

I find it interesting that these self-proclaimed genuises are about to make THE dumbest decision that has ever been made in the history of the U.S.A. Apparently the public schools don't teach the kids about the cons of Communism anymore... standing in long lines for a loaf of bread, the loss of personal freedom and civil liberties... and lets not even get started on the farce that is called Socialized Medicine.

I don't want to stoop to the level of the Democrats by insulting their intelligence based on their political beliefs, because (at least for a couple more months anyway) we still live in a country that allows us political freedom to decide for ourselves who/what is best for our country. Although I do believe that in order to even consider voting for Mr. Obama you have to have your head completely buried in the sand, I think it's more of an ethical/moral deficiency that is leading the lemmings to jump off the cliff than anything else.

As much as I have been praying for ANYONE other than Obama to win this election, part of me is very interested to sit back and watch the post-game show once they put their "Messiah" into the Oval Office.

By voting for Obama, we are effectively turning our back on God, and once that happens, it's not going to be pretty. I know they don't teach it in schools anymore, but our Country was founded on very strong Christian Fundamental beliefs, and by taking those things out of our Gov't., we are destroying the foundation this once great Nation was built on... w/out that foundation this country is doomed to fail.

Posted by: E.S. | Nov 3, 2008 9:01:26 AM

that's rich, rich...your limited attention span clearly kept you from finishing the story...see this at the bottom:

"The point is, if we set rigorous standards for the allowable emissions, then we can allow the market to determine and technology and entrepreneurs to pursue, what the best approach is to take, as opposed to us saying at the outset, here are the winners that we’re picking and maybe we pick wrong and maybe we pick right.”

So get over it you ignoramus! Read the whole quote, or be stuck with another four years of GOP boobiehatchery
