Secretary of State Hillary Clinton?
November 14, 2008 12:58 PM
There's a lot of buzz in DC about the fact that the Obama Transition Team is, according to one knowledgeable source, "very serious" about Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., being under consideration for secretary of state.
ABC News can confirm that President-elect Barack Obama met with Clinton Thursday afternoon at Obama’s downtown office in Chicago.
The AP first broke the news and reported that the motorcade of Clinton, who receives Secret Service protection as a former first lady, was seen leaving the office complex shortly before Obama left for the day.
George Stephanopoulos reported Clinton's name being in the mix last week on "Good Morning America," but the buzz grew louder after Clinton was spotted boarding a flight to Chicago.
Her spokesman Philippe Reines would not discuss Clinton's schedule, and of course, the Obama Transition Team would not comment.
The thinking about a Secretary of State Clinton is simple, I'm told: she's smart, she's strong, she's experienced, she's a team player, she is usually pretty diplomatic, and she also brings some gender diversity to an Obama Team concerned about such matters.
She brings instant stature to the job, one Democrat told me. Many world leaders have known her for almost two decades.
"Clinton is the gold standard around the world," said Chris Lehane, a former spokesman for Vice President Al Gore.
There are drawbacks, of course. Her husband Bill Clinton's vast and varied international business dealings and relationships, which have put him at odds with her policy positions.
And of course, she and Obama famously and repeatedly clashed over international issues during their contentious primaries. She assailed as "naive" his willingness to speak to the leaders of hostile regimes without preconditions, and she assailed as reckless his public discussions about his willingness to attack high-value terrorist targets in Pakistan with or without Pakistan government permission.
Obama "basically threatened to bomb Pakistan, which I don't think was a particularly wise position to take," Clinton said at the Democratic debate in Cleveland, Ohio, Feb. 26.
Most ugly, probably was the Tuzla sniper fire incident. Clinton erroneously claimed about a trip to Tuzla, Bosnia: "I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead, we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
That was later proven false, and Clinton acknowledged "misspeaking."
Countered the Obama campaign's Tommy Vietor: "Senator Clinton said that a planned welcoming ceremony was cancelled because they needed to avoid sniper fire, but news footage shows that she was met by a small child who read her a poem. Contrary to the latest spin from the Clinton campaign, when you make a false claim that's in your prepared remarks, it's not misspeaking, it's misleading, and it's part of a troubling pattern of Senator Clinton inflating her foreign policy experience."
Ouch. Harsh words for one's Secretary of State.
But no doubt that's water under the bridge. In Boca Raton in May, Obama -- asked by a vote if he would consider putting Clinton on the ticket -- said, "I'm a practical-minded guy. And, you know, one of my heroes is Abraham Lincoln. And a while back there was a wonderful book written by Doris Kearns Goodwin called 'Team of Rivals.'"
The book, Obama said, discussed how "Lincoln basically pulled in all the people who had been running against him into his Cabinet because whatever personal feelings there were, the issue was how can we get this country through this time of crisis. And I think that has to be the approach that one takes, whether it's vice president or Cabinet, whoever."
Clinton spoke at a New York State Mass Transit Fall Convention today, but declined to comment on her meeting with Obama.

I believe that Hillary Clinton will be the best person for the Sec.of State, because of her intelligent, her people-person persona and her expertise in related work. In over-all I know that President-Elect Obama with his intelligent, far-seeing vision and wisdom will select the best people suited to work wtth him. I know there are a lot of others that are also great and qualify for the job, but unfortunately they can only be a certain amount of people to be selected at that appointed time. What I would of done if I were the President is to make sure that everyone understand the principles and loyalty that required for the positions. Not just to the President but for the soul purpose of the people and our country, and if those principles were to be violated
by any deceptiveness or any treacherousness, a disciplinary action will be taken. That action will include a voluntary of them stepping down and be replace by someone else that were also qualify for the position at that time.

Hillary is a hard worker. She is a team player. She is smart. I liked her in the senate. She, I thought would make a good speaker of the house or majority leader. She could be a strong voice in the senate. What of her pet project of redoing our health system? How would being Sec of State help that? Wouldn't she be better at Sec of health and human services......Obama is smart, in a way he is surrounding himself with the very people who might oppose his ideas (in the future). He is sort of eliminating those who have the power to go against what he wants passed (in the senate) by surrounding himself with them. He is also making his way easier. I would rather have Hillary in the senate or as Sec of Health.

As a very interested Canadian, who has closely followed and watched the political situation in the US from a physical distance, I am pleased for You with your choice of a President. When I first heard of the meeting between Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton, there was no other possibility in my mind that Mrs. Clinton be other than Secretary of State. She is brilliant, knowledgeable, succesful and is well traveled. 1992,"the best we can to find ... the right balance". Well versed in politics, sensitive to the US problem of Health Care: "advocate for expanding health insurance coverage, ensuring children ..". I could not wish better for the US than to have Mrs. Clinton represent you as Secretary of State. The Election Battle is over. May Mr. Obama be steadfast in his determination of "uniting ..." the country. Best Wishes to us all.
Thank You for allowing me to share my thoughts with you.

Donald from Hawaii: I'm not joking! I never joke about anything! And if you knew me you'd know that I'm no joke either! Condoleeza Rice is intelligent, I think even more intelligent than Hillary and she's experienced with the job!

With the number of ballots Clinton received in the run-off, why would she not be the best person to fill the Secretary of State position?!?!?! I think it would be the best move Obama could make!!

Very possible candidate, but I'd like Paterson or Holbrook much better. Hilary has tremendous influence as a Senator and that would be bad to lose.

Yes, President Bush is partially responsible for our current crisis, but equally responsible are the Senate, and House of Representatives from all three political parties, and so are we for being so complacent allowing the liberal media to brainwash us.
If our great nation goes down the toilet it will be our fault for being so blinded by anger to vote for an empty suit who promised "Change", and who has surrounded himself by so many anti-American radicals. God save us and protect us from our foreign and domestic enemies. I hope the change people yearn for is not experimenting with socialism or communism.

One good thing about the speculation of Hillary becoming Secretary of State is, it has kept Palin out of the news...lol

It's sad but most Americans have forgotten the truth: the power of the U.S. Government resides in "We The People"!
And "we" have allowed our political system to be corrupted by a two-party "ruling class" with no genuine concern for their constituents, other than the power, prestige and privilege they have loaned to them.
And make no mistake, they use it all for their benefit, not ours!
Do you honestly believe for one second that "government" cares one whit for you or your family?
The government didn't make this nation great, the individual did! And only the individual will keep this nation great.
It's high time we held our "leaders" accountable, at every level of government!
We don't work for them, they work for "we the people". Not for themselves, not for the lobbyists, nor any other organization. Period!
Remind them of this fact every chance you get, and maybe this nation will finally get the change it needs!
Wake up America!
"The issue today is the same as it has been throughout all history, whether man shall be allowed to govern himself or be ruled by a small elite."

Diana,
Some people are not as fortunate as you are. You said you have a stable job, well I hope you keep that stable job because there are no stable jobs any more.
I hope you do not find yourself in the unfortunate spot some people have found themselves through no fault of there own. Bush has sucked the life out of this country and you may be one of the very few that has benefitted from his time as President.

I have read some of the posted comments and I am very dissapointed with the Republican base. Our country is under a lot of serious problems, and in order to find a solution we all must be open to new ideas. The Republicans rather fund a dead end war instead of providing economic relief for our country. They also rather give tax cuts to upper class instead of the middle class and look at the results (where are the jobs). In order for businesses to survive the consumer must have money, if you keep taxing the middle class our economy will end up like our current situation. To answer Diana from California, yes the president should take blame for our current crisis. The president has a responsibility to oversee that our country is running correctly. A good example is the way you run your finances like you mentioned on your blog, is the way our president should have ran our nations finances.

Secretary of State is a high-profile post, and Clinton would no doubt excel at it, but I wonder if she might not be more effective in the Health and Human Services post overseeing health care reform.

This is a suprise, but the more one thinks about it, the more it makes sense! May I even say that it is a brilliant move by Obama. He has proved himself once and again that he is a pragmatic leader and is ready to get serious and solve problems. For the first time in my adult life, I feel hopeful and really proud of America.
