The Return of Samantha Power

November 28, 2008 8:04 PM

An eagle-eyed AP writer caught the fact that Samantha Power -- the highly acclaimed, Pulitzer prize-winning Harvard professor booted from the Obama campaign in March for calling Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, a "monster" in an interview with the Scotsman newspaper -- has re-emerged as a member of President-elect Obama's transition team.

Specifically, Power is listed as a member of PEBO's "agency review team" on national security.

The even more interesting wrinkle -- Power is focused on the State Department, which the aforementioned Ms. Clinton will likely soon helm.

Sources tell ABC News that Power has been on board from the very beginning of the State Department transition team, publicly or not.

A Democratic source says that Power reached out to Clinton after the election to apologize and it was "well received" by the New York senator.

Neither the Obama Transition Team nor Clinton's office is commenting.

Hillary should tell 0bama to "get stuffed." I am sure Ms. Power can explain what that means.

No, JR I don't miss the point. I had the same initial reaction. Upon reflection, I decided I trust her to know what she wants, and what she is doing. According to reports she wavered herself, but in the end she chose to take it.

As to O, I would like to see him try to fire her and expect that as a former 1st Lady, Senator, formidable primary rival and SOS,that she would fade under the glare of his power.

He would be unleashing one very pissed off lioness. It would come back to haunt him...big time... and he is bright enough to know that.

Secretary of State won't mean much. We'll be scrambling for money and jobs by next summer. The Next Great Depression is coming and it will destroy this country forever. Even English fell from her high perch. America used to be great but now it's overpriced and inflated with fat Americans in too much debt. This Next Great Depression will be painful. Oh well, I've got mine, who cares about YOU.

David H, nice fairy tale.

Michael, you seem to miss the point. As senator, Hillary is elected and can only be removed by election. As SOS, she will work for Obama and he can simply replace her if she wanders from HIS message.

That's one of the reasons I don't understand her wanting the job. She would become a powerhouse in the Senate and under NOONE'S thumb.

"One over-heated phrase (of hers) should not eliminate a person from politics."

I think you're referring to Power's statement of Clinton being a monster. Around the same time, Power was speaking about Obama's plan for Iraq troop withdrawal on a major station. I watched some of the interview. She was insisting pretty vociferously that it would have to be adjusted. I'm inclined to think her resignation was the culmination of both incidents.

Being on the transition team with the state department doesn't mean Power has been appointed there for the duration. I would be disappointed if that were to become the case, because I don't think she's shown the temperament and discretion for a more permanent position.

With all due respect to Powell, a better comparison for Hillary would be Kissinger. She won't tolerate being a figurehead and she isn't going to be used. She's too strong, has her own base of followers and doesn't need to worry about her future or offending O.

O,what ever else you think of him, is not stupid,if he tried to throw her under the bus, the bus would flip over with him in it.

The partnership will be real, even if it isn't warm and who knows about that as time goes by?

Everyone has a view and somewhere in the middle therein lies the truth.

The BO nominees are going to be scrutinized by WHOEVER. What is going to be truly questioned and regreted by the 52% who voted for BO in 2009 is the stark reality "what were we thinking".

Because our campaign periods have become too long, and so much money is being spent, some people will enter the fray and say (and possibly do) anything to advance their candidate of choice. One over-heated phrase (of hers) should not eliminate a person from politics, that is, unless they've yelled "Fire!" in a crowded auditorium, or "Sale" at a New York Wallmart store where someone gets trampled and killed. Let's keep the degree of seriousness about things in perspective, please.

Great! We NEED honest and brilliant women who can kick some foreign policy butt!

Yeah Fran and the last one was Buchanan over 150 years ago. Sorry, but if no one has moved from SOS to the POTUS in 150 years, then the times that allowed the move to happen doesn't exist anymore. I stand by the claim that SOS is a "political" career ender.

I seriously doubt that Samantha Power has changed her opinion of Hillary Clinton. Power seemed pretty certain that Hillary was a monster. The involvement of Power with the State Department is a further reason that Hillary should stay in the Senate, and leave the State job to somebody else.

Big-O does not want Hillary in his administration. On the other hand, he does not want her in the Senate, where she is in a position to challenge his power, push her own agenda, and build a base to challenge him in the next election. He also does not want Bill Clinton freelancing foreign policy. By putting Hillary in State he emasculates both of the Clintons.

Will Hillary play a role in foreign policy? Probably not. Obama and his band of academics will run foreign policy from the White House, not the State Department. It will be Bush and Colin Powell all over again. Powell was out of the loop on all major decisions, and was ignored when he tried to weigh in on the war. The only time Bush ever used Powell was to sell his war to the U.N. Powell did as he was told, and lied for Bush, thereby insuring he ended his career with no credibility.

Obama is trying to take over the entire Clinton machine, and if Hillary joins his administration it will that much easier to do. Once he has the machine he will cut Hillary loose. To consolidate his control over the Democratic party Obama will have to destroy Hillary, and if she is in his cabinet he can do it. Obama has shown himself completely untrustworthy. He has shown no loyalty to Chicago friends who stood in the way of his ascendancy. He will show no mercy to Hillary.

In the Senate, Hillary can tend to her own power base and exert influence on those still loyal to her and Bill. Many of those loyalists will be in influential positions in the White House and cabinet. They will report to Obama, but Hillary and Bill can provide direction from outside. Hillary will be far more effective outside of Obama's control than under it; and she will not be at risk of being destroyed by Obama.

For these reasons she should steer clear of any appointment to his administration.

As a man I have to say I here a lot of us run off at the mouth before thinking too.Gramm caling America "nation of whiners" comes to mind prettty quickly, O saying "the claws come out" in referance to Hillary another. The heat of battle among highly competative people knows no gender.
Thoughlessness doesn't even require passion to raise its ugly head. How many men will say something today to their wives, girlfriends or boyfriends that they will later regret?

You people (who posted a comment) get all worked up over nothing that matters. All politicians believe in their own importance way more than us mere mortals, but they should never, ever be put upon a pedestal as a "hero" or "deity".
0bama is just a man who has a J-O-B to do, so stop shouting like he is the messiah.

Common, Guys...
If you take any talks and actions during the campaign trail so serious, how can you explain Hillary's transformation from before and after June?

Posted by: jj | Nov 29, 2008 11:28:35 AM

Well, kat, we Dems are not like the Republicans who have a burn-it-all-down mentality when it comes to facing an election loss where they have to throw all the "non-believers" out. Kathleen Parker now has been drowning in hate mail after rightfully pointing out Palin's lack of intelligence and intellectual curiosity, Powell has now been called a traitor.

Go on, make your base even smaller. We won't stop you.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Apparently, my concerns about Power make me an unbeliever. FYI, you're tossing me out of the Democratic party by the logic of your accusations. I guess you prefer a party of clones, of tweedily dees and tweedily dums,of twin mentalities existing within millions. What's next? A party uniform with an O insignia? It's obviously not acceptable to you for a variance of opinions to exist in the Democratic party. Oops, there I go again, drama responding to drama.

Posted by: kat | Nov 29, 2008 11:22:50 AM

so is this start of having anti-Israel people now part of his team?

Posted by: frieda | Nov 29, 2008 11:18:18 AM

Sadly, Samantha Powers resume of "highly acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize winning Harvard professor" means only that she has been rewarded for preaching to a select choir that loves to congratulate themselves for telling each other what they already believe is true. These are who regard themselves as highly intelligent but are increasingly hostile to real debate; the fuel of real learning and progress.

By being SOS, Hillary will have the foreign policy experience to run in 2016.

Posted by: d | Nov 29, 2008 11:14:57 AM

Actually JR, four Secretaries of State have gone on to become president. This does not knock her out of the running at all. It's ok with me if she doesn't as I would never vote for her, but then I didn't vote for Obama either.
