Want to Feel Old?

November 22, 2008 6:48 PM

When he's sworn in, Rep.-elect Aaron Schock, R-Ill., will be the first Member of Congress born in the 1980s.

The 27-year-old member of the Illinois state house, filling the seat of retiring Rep. Ray LaHood, R-Ill., was born on May 28, 1981.

"27-year-old member of the Illinois state house"
no big deal....

I think it's an old Chinese blessing that goes something like: "may you live in interesting times"....
Age is what you make of it....
In my lifetime so far.........

I was born during the height of McCarthyism..
and the end of the Korean War

Alaska became a state

I played stickball on the streets of Brooklyn during the Cuban missile crisis....

I saw my elementary school teachers cry when Kennedy was shot, and then watched the funeral.

I missed seeing the great jazz musicians Miles Davis and John Coltrane at their creative peak..

I watched the civil rights movement on TV in B&W, and heard the 'I have a dream' speech..
and saw the 'struggle' live on TV....

I watched and learned about something called Viet Nam.

I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's show.
Rock......... FM radio............ Hippies

I saw black America gain the right to vote as well as those who were 18 years of age.

Malcom X, Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy
all gone in an instant.....

I watched TV and saw parts of America go up in flames, riots, and a Democratic convention in Chicago.

Nixon & China and 'ping pong' diplomacy

I heard about the growing number of dead Americans in Viet Nam.

I marched against the war

I saw man walk on the moon

I smoked 'pot' and went to the Fillmore East

I protested against the war and sweated out the 'draft lottery'.

I was lucky and went 'away' to college.

Viet Nam ends, too many die for nothing

The Godfather

Nixon..... Watergate....... resignation of a president

Ford,

Disco............. blah !

Carter ( folks really should have listened to him), .. Hostage crisis

Star Wars...... Close Encounters

Reagan.....

Sadat goes to Isreal.... Sadat assassinated

Reagan... Star Wars..... 'tear down this wall'

Iraq Vrs. Iran..... Rumsfeld shakes hands with Saddam.

Stock market crashes........... then Savings and loan scandals....

Fall of the Soviet Union and freedom for the Iron Curtain countries........

Bush 1..... bad economy and high unemployment

Clinton 8 years of good times, along with Monica and disgrace.

Bush 2...... 2000...... the recount
Republican rule....
9/11 ..... Iraq........Bin Laden.. Katrina ... Mission Accomplished,.. Islamo-fascists.. war on terror.. policy mistakes...... economy crashes
.. high unemployment.... bailouts..
the worst and most ineffective President of all time

- Obama............. hope

I have an Aunt who turns 100 in January, imagine what she has seen......... !!!!!!

Hopefully I've still got time left......
can't wait to see what else happens before I check out...

Well, Old? no. I am one day older than he is. Unaccomplished? Now that is a different story...

Obama will be the first President I am older than (by mere months - I emphasize).

Either I am getting old, or the President-Elect is relatively young and perhaps too inexperienced... Or both... Or none of the above. (Okay, so I threw in that last option to be charitable to the President Elect, and to myself. So sue me.)

A 27-year old Republican? What Kool-Aid has he been fed?

Speak for yourself: You don't have to brag! LOL

If we could only replace them all with 27 year olds.

Posted by: Vi | Nov 22, 2008 9:11:55 PM

Well, Jake, you succeeded in making me feel old, especially since Rep.-elect Schock is from my hometown of Peoria. I'd add more comments, but my rheumatism and my lumbago are acting up.

I was born in 1986 :)

LOL, Jake. Thank you for the laugh. I was starting to miss that from your blog. But sorry, didn't make me feel too old. (if it helps.... no, never mind)
