Assailing the Media and Elisabeth Hasselback, Rev. Wright Returns to Trinity
December 08, 2008 12:28 PM
Just as William Ayers has returned to the public sphere to discuss his role in Election 2008, so too has the fiery preacher Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who yesterday returned to Trinity United Church of Christ to deliver a sermon.
The Chicago Tribune reports that negative media coverage would never dampen Trinity spirit.
"Jesus said upon this rock I will build -- listen to the promise -- my church," Wright said. "And the gates of Hell -- listen to the promise -- the gates of Hell -- neither ABC nor CNN -- the gates of Hell -- neither Hannity nor O'Reilly -- the gates of Hell -- neither Time, Time magazine, Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Tribune ... the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. Nothing will be impossible with God."
Wright said that "any preacher who dares to point out the simple ugly facts found in every field imaginable is demonized as volatile, controversial, incendiary, inflammatory, anti-American and radical."
The preacher who caused former parishioner President-elect Obama defending his use of demeaning language -- "garlic noses" -- to describe Italians in a past sermon. He said he'd been referring to "Emperor Augustus in Rome -- that's in Italy, dizzy blond on the View," Wright said in what seemed a reference to Elisabeth Hasselback of The View.

I think you and your company should decide not to put on your news shows anything more that Wright says or demand he apologize when he does. I think this man is really a result of his own making. And eventually he will chastised for the awful things he says about this country and people. He is not a Christian nor is he a decent human being. He is full of hate for a country who gave him opportunities he wouldn't find in any other country. I wonder how he would fare if he was living in the land of his forfathers. He is pathetic and I do believe Mr O left his church so he could be elected and with the help of your news show and others he got elected. I pray for this country daily. We are headed for a bad time I feel.

He reminds me of the preacher in the Scarlett Letter. Such a hypocrite! He shouldn't be allowed to refer to himself as a Christian. He does nothing but do his best to cause as much hatred as he can between other people.

Time to turn off the news and leave the websites of those who keep propagating Wright's words out of context. Unfortunately, the coverage isn't just coming from the more blatant right wing news sources.

The selective use of a sound bite, Taken out of context and repeated over and over, is propaganda and disinformation. It's done to distract from real issues. I find the idea that 'god' would 'damn' America for the sin of slavery perfectly reasonable. More reasonable than a lot of the hate spewed by the right-wing evangelicals about other religions and atheists.
Time to turn off the right-wing hate machine. Fear, Hate and Division. It's all they've got.

Why is any reporting what Wright says in a sermon? We know he's an attention-seeking demagogue but what he's saying is no different from things said around dinner tables by crazy uncles all across the country every night. How many people "walked out of that home" when hearing such "inflammatory rhetoric"? I bet about ZERO!

How much of a pain will Rev. Wright be for Obama in the White House? Will it be breaking news every time he speaks of Obama, or says something controversial?

By reading the responses, I can see the intended effect for running this non-news story. Hey, Tapper, FOX news itself couldn't have done a better job of balancing two hot button topics like you have.

- funny how Elisabeth Hasselbeck , whose 'claim to fame' is being a former reality show contestant of Survivor: her opinions are given so much 'street cred'..... not saying she doesn't have a right to her opinions, but, Rev. Wright certainly with his history, expresses historical perspective about his experiences in a way Hasselback never can, whether you agree with them or not.
The common thread that ties them both together is that if you say anything loud and dumb enough that ticks someone off, your likely to end up on TV.

Ayers and Wright in the same story. The juxtaposing is worthy of FOX . Wright is right about the media gates of hell- especially if you define hell as being caught up in changeless drama.

I am a White American of Italian heritage and being called a "garlic nose" ,frankly, made me laugh. I myself might have thought of worse terms to describe Ms. Hassleback. You have to understand the era of Rev. White. I remember 'bussing' water fountains marked "colored" and given the Rev.'s age, he has been through that era, as well. My Dad used slang for every ethnic group there is. It doesn't make it right, of course. But we all need to be a bit more understanding. I am sure he wouldn't call me 'garlic nose' to my face and nor would I hurt any human by using the terms my father used for various humans.
Try to understand our older people and all they've suffered due to prejudice and give them a break.
Thank you for the opportunity of speaking!!

The same can definitely be said about white people and what they say about black people in the privacy of their homes.
Racism, bigotry and prejudice- are just some of things this country we live in was founded upon however as we grow up as a nation the extremists on both sides will contiune to be marginalized. At least thats my prayer. No one race is perfect-

At least somebody from "Obamination" will stand up and speak the TRUTH!!!

As a black man I have been married to 2 white women. Currently happily for 12 years now. The stuff I heard & was told coming from the mouth of their family & friends could not compare to 100 rev. Wrights.

How appropriate, Rev Idiot is back from the island of Lost just before a new season starts. Maybe someone could send him back?

Apparently the sentinels at the gates of hell can't find anything better to dish out today. Why is this even news?
Posted by: charlie brown | Dec 8, 2008 1:07:43 PM
I guess the Rev can say anything he wants. It is not like this stuff isn't going on everywhere. It may not be very PC but I think black people say much worse about the whites in power we are just not privy to it. Now having said that what will his take be on Obama if Obama doesn't play his game? I think he will hurt the new President because he wants things that can't happen to happen. He didn't do him any good before the election and he thinks he can bully him now. I don't think so I think Obama will not be able to do much for any of us in the short term.Black affairs and black ajendas are only part of what this country has to face. I hope we can stop some of the race hate on both sides.
