Biden Asks Donors to Help Clinton Retire Debt
December 05, 2008 11:34 AM
In an email to supporters sent this morning, Vice President-elect Biden asks donors to help President-elect Obama's nominee for Secretary of State, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, retire her more than $7 million in campaign debt.
"Our campaign pledged to help Senator Hillary Clinton -- one of the vital members of our team and our future Secretary of State -- retire her campaign debt," the email from Biden says. "That's the money her campaign owes to the small vendors across the country that make our political process possible.
"We welcome Hillary as a partner in our administration, and I hope you will show your support by helping Barack fulfill our campaign promise," the letter said.
The letter reminds Obama-Biden supporters of Clinton's myriad efforts on behalf of the ticket. Of the $7.5 million in debt, $5.3 million is owed to the firms of Clinton's controversial strategist, Mark Penn, one of Obama's strongest critics within the erstwhile Clinton presidential campaign.
Biden's email is merely the latest effort to help Clinton retire her debt before ethics laws guiding the Secretary of State's office prevent her from doing so.
The New York Senator, her husband, and "Ugly Betty" actress America Ferrera will hold a fundraising event on Dec. 15, and Clinton's mother will soon be hawking a children's book about her daughter's candidacy -- "Dreams Taking Flight" by Kathleen Krull -- some of the proceeds from which will also help retire the debt.
The letter from Mr. Biden is below:
***
FIRSTNAME(Friend) --
President-elect Obama and I have been assembling our team, and we plan to hit the ground running next month.
We want to be ready to go, and that's why I'm asking you to help us honor an outstanding commitment we made during the election.
Our campaign pledged to help Senator Hillary Clinton -- one of the vital members of our team and our future Secretary of State -- retire her campaign debt. That's the money her campaign owes to the small vendors across the country that make our political process possible.
Barack and I had the deepest respect for Hillary as an opponent on the campaign trail. Her undeniable intellect, talent, and passion strengthened Barack as a candidate and tested our movement for change.
We welcome Hillary as a partner in our administration, and I hope you will show your support by helping Barack fulfill our campaign promise.
Will you make a contribution of $AMOUNT or more now to retire Hillary's campaign debt?
I saw your generosity and commitment to this team throughout the election, and I know we can do it.
In the general election, Hillary was one of our strongest advocates. She traveled the country and did more than 70 events, raising money and bringing new supporters into our campaign.
As Secretary of State, she will be indispensable in furthering Barack's agenda for change.
Let's welcome Hillary to the team and thank her for efforts by helping to retire her debt to the hard-working individuals and small businesses that were a part of the election:
Your support and generosity got us this far, and I know I can count on it now.
Thank you,
Joe

This is completely ridiculous. Candidates CHOOSE to run for President, and they CHOOSE how much and where to allocate their campaign funds. She chased a dream, invested in herself, and failed. This is about as logical as if I were to invest $100,000.00 of my own money (or maybe I'll borrow it from a 'vendor', say my parents) in the stock market, because I have a dream of become a rich man. Then, when the economy tanks and I'm left with nothing, I (with a clean concious of course) ask my fellow tax payers to send 'pitty donations' to me because my venture failed. Arguably my venture was more risky, because I was banking on the success of companies that I have no control of. She banked on herself, and failed, so in reality, she has no one to blame but herself!!!

Utterly ridiculous. They are mega-millionaires who can pay their own bills.
I am still outraged at her trying to steal furniture from the White House in 2000. Jimmy Carter called them grifters and that was generous. I wish the Clintons would just go away!

The fact that Hillary (through Biden) is still shilling for money during a severe national crisis of high unemployment and debt reveals her sad lack of diplomacy skills.
The fact that Hillary has this enormous debt in the first place shows a lack of decision-making skills.
The fact that Hillary alienated most of the Senate and part of the future Cabinet shows her lack of political skills.
The fact that Hillary did not strategize and allocate resources correctly shows a lack of leadership and organization skills.
Maybe she should approach Congress for a bailout during her confirmation hearing?

I too feel that the Clintons should take care of this debt. (Or perhaps use a portion of the remaining campaign money in Obama's fund) But with the country in such dire need right now, Joe Biden's email made me sick. I didn't support Hillary during the campaign and I don't want to pay her debt now.

Where are all the PUMAS? Shouldn't they be helping out with Sen Clinton's debt?

No no and no.

No way, no how. Not for Mark Penn and not for Hillary. Her campaign was over in March. She could not win and yet she continued to do everything humanly possible to undermine Obama. That aside, she will be an absolute disaster as Secretary of State. She has no leadership skills as evidenced by her failed campaign. I may have to live with this but I will not contribute to it financially.

Why are they asking for money to bail out Hillary
the Obama campaign has a surplus of over 30 million dollars that they can legally give to Hillary take the money from that.
This has been the most expensive election in history how many jobs, and or health care could this money have rally gone to what a joke

Looks like all us democrats are ready to bicker with one another and waste our chance to bring change to our government. As one who backed Hillary initially, then worked for Obama when he won the primary, I know that I won't have my pet projects moved to the top and I know that I'll need to consider the most good for the most people. Four and eight years from now I want to know that we worked together to bring about real change and I sure as hell don't want to look back at the chances we blew because we were so busy fighting among ourselves.

We have homeless people, millions have lost their jobs, their pensions, their health care and we are suppose to give our money to the Clintons? Yea, right!
They promised health care for everyone during the Clinton Presidency and they didn't delivier. Hillary promised New Yorkers that she would create 250,000 new jobs when she became the Senator from New York and she didn't deliver.
The buck stops here.

Hillary and Bill are worth over 130 million.
The Clintons last year alone made 20 million.
Bill Clinton can on any given day give a speech for six figures.
Why don't they just write a check.
I read Clinton's mom is offering a children's book for fifty dollars to pay down the debt.
The Clintons should especially pay back the vendors with their own money which they could do for a few million.

We have a good Democratic team who will be highly capable at governing, something the Republicans have not done for the last 8 yrs. If Barack and Joe really want our assistance to keep a campaign promise, then I think that those who can should chip in a few bucks.
It will go a long way toward showing Democratic solidarity and will reflect well on Obama and all of us. Also, Barack is an intelligent guy and if he wants her on his team, then I can go with that.
The Republicans have stayed in office for as long as they have because they stuck together.
Democrats should do that too.

HRC's determination is admirable. By refusing to listen to those mostly male voices of demands to step down, she succeeded in almost a tie with the popular vote. Women shattering glass ceilings are to be commended and yes, helped in paying off debt!! What's the big deal about it, anyway? Joe Biden isn't doing a stick up, no one is being forced.

I deleted the message from Joe Biden. There is no way I would give money to Clinton's campaign debt. She ran an fiscally irresponsible and politically ugly campaign. I don't think she's qualified to be Secretary of State. Zero dollars for Hillary. The Clintons can and should pay this debt themselves - or ask her alleged "18 million supporters" to each contribute $1.

People can be so callous. Hillary could have chosen to remain a U.S. Senator and would have ultimately had the donations needed to pay off her debts. She could have had ample power in the Senate and a cushy life. I'm sure she thought of this when presented with the opportunity to be SoS and why she almost turned the opportunity down. This is a major monetary sacrifice for her. She already paid over $11 million out of hers and Bill's pocket to pay back campaign debts, which is a substantial drain on their finances. That remaining $7.5 million won't be as easy to cover, particularly because Bill won't have as many opportunities to make scads of money from foreign entities while she is SoS. She could have told President-elect Obama to forget it, but she (and Bill) answered his and our country's call. She deserves his and our support as otherwise she is essentially being asked to pay $7.5 million to become SoS. Hillary Clinton is a patriot and I hope she will be treated like one. It's time to donate.

No dime to Mark Penn whose only job was to tear down Obama with his rovian tactics (Ayers, Farakhan).

She has over 120 million dollars and collected monies from the State of New York for three years while contributing nothing. She should be paying the State back.

Sorry, Hillary. You and Bill are rich by anyone's standards. All Bill needs to do is give a few more speeches.
And I would never donate to you after your nasty campaign that sought to exploit feelings of race and class.

Here's my $10. Where can I donate? I'd rather have a SoS who can concentrate on her job than some debt that she has to pay back. After all, the money went to different people and must have provided for a lot of jobs.
