Biden's Puppy Named 'Champ'
December 30, 2008 9:19 AM
ABC NEWS' MATT JAFFE REPORTS:
At every rally on the campaign trail, Vice President-elect Joe Biden concluded his speeches with the inspirational words of his father.
"Any time you get knocked down, champ, get up!" Biden recalled his father telling him as a young boy.
Clearly the refrain resonated with Biden's granddaughters.
The kids, given the task of naming the Vice President-elect's new German Shepherd puppy, gathered the whole Biden family around the tree on Christmas morning to announce that the dog would be named "Champ," said Biden's spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander.
Biden got the new pooch a couple weeks ago from a breeder, fulfilling a promise that his wife Jill made to him that if elected, he could get a puppy.
But one won't be enough...
The Delaware lawmaker recently told George Stephanopoulos in an interview on "This Week" that he will also get a second dog after the January inauguration, likely a Golden Retriever for his wife.
"We're going to have more than one puppy," Biden said.
"I've had German Shepherds since I was a kid and I've actually trained them and shown them in the past," Biden told Stephanopoulos. "So I wanted a German Shepherd and we're going to get a pound dog, which my wife wants, who is hopefully a Golden [Retriever]."
Meanwhile, President-elect Barack Obama has also promised to get his daughters a new puppy, but will wait until they have moved into the White House to do so.

Good on you, Maisy and Hunter...Champ is a most perfect name for Joe's puppy. Especially for those of us who know of the personal and political pain and challenge our next Vice President has gone through and still stood tall, I say love to you Joe Biden. And as our new VP, America could not be any more fortunate...you bring a wealth of talent and experience, honesty and integrity. Please enjoy your puppy, Champ.(Mr. Tapper: thank you for a positive story on Mr. Biden from Jaffe. I read only conflict, death, environmental disaster, economic hardship each day, and a story like this is a nice...albeit brief...respite)

"And to Laughing Cynic, obviously you live in a world where people aren't influenced by their children."
No, I live in this real world. This world where animals are thrown aside when "their children" get tired of the pets, or when people move someplace where they can't have animals.
And it continues to amaze me that people assume someone is a "loving parent" (ANY someone, not just Obama) based on the public presentation.

Jake, I don't get why you are writing such fluff pieces. There are really important things going on. Here's a clue: Look at the Mid-East.
And to Laughing Cynic, obviously you live in a world where people aren't influenced by their children. My husband resisted getting a pet, 'too much trouble' for years before my kids wore him down. Two dogs and a cat later, my husband's blood pressure is down, our pets are a part of our family according to him and we all get laughs daily from their antics.
As for suggesting that Obama is getting a pet for media attention, that's just silly. He gets media attention just walking down the street. And it is truly cruel to suggest he would get rid of a family pet when he leaves the White House, as he has proved by his actions that he is a loving parent so would never hurt his children purposefully.
It can't be fun to be so grouchy.

Biggest heartwarming story since
Socks and ol' Buddy from the Clinton
days. Buddy was hit by a truck. Clinton
was hit with a subpoena. Champ may
be hit with the mange and need hairplugs. The fun is back.....the Dems
are back in town.

"Meanwhile, President-elect Barack Obama has also promised to get his daughters a new puppy, but will wait until they have moved into the White House to do so."
And he'll get rid of it when they leave the White House? Won't have any use for it anymore, so under the bus, Fluffy!
Dogs (and cats, and whatever else you call a pet) are part of the family, and shouldn't be used for media attention, or obtained just because people think a president should have one. He doesn't like dogs (if he did he would already have one, and I don't see that he ever has), and is avoiding getting one, so he should just say NO. And be honest for just once. Just once.

Is this a NEWS STORY?
Biden should have named the dog after
himself, Doofus!
Hopefully this is the only decision
Obama will allow Dopey Joe to make
in the next 4 years!

It would be awesome if Obama got two pit bull terriers.

"What is Israel's excuse for ramming a boat brining aid into gaza?
What is Israel's excuse??? What is Cynthias?!!!
What is Cynthia's excuse for trying to sneak in at night and not acknowledging a hail from the Israeli navy?
What is the excuse of this grandstanding action that could have gotten them all killed?
Did this humanitarian vessel have UN clearances? NO?? If yes then maybe just maybe they could have argued their way in.
But no, they blame Israel for protecting its coast in time of war as they tried to sneak in
Egypt and PA are generally staying neutral here in word and deed and say they warned Hamas not to break the ceasefire. Everybody wants a Palestinian solution - except Hamas and Iran - who want destruction of Israel instead of peace - well they're getting a piece of their own destruction.

I'm no pollyanna, the rest of you guys. But I like the name. However, the Hamas thing IS more worthy of news space than this.

Well,...I for one am glad to see that Biden can actually make a decision.
Just keep him right there where he is now!

Question:
You can write millions of books or read every article wherever it is written, but will that change the situation?
You mentioned 50 years! In your view something which was not possible for all this all time long, will it be possible because we have started blogging??
Posted by: Rita | Dec 30, 2008 12:27:33 PM
news?
and Rita, so because it is complicated it should be left alone? There is nothing complicated about what has been going on in the past few days. Hundreds are dying while the world looks the other way. 50 years from today 50 books will be written about what has happened in the past few days and I can't wait to read them. Maybe they will explain why nobody is speaking up.

Got it from a breeder? What is a shelter dog not worthy enough to be in the VP's home?
Posted by: Rob | Dec 30, 2008 10:26:15 AM
Hmm..... Israel, Hamas, Barak the Magic Negro, Iraq, Afghanistan, Those idiots in the Republican Caucus, falling home prices, job losses.

Rachel:
The news regarding the Mideast is too complicated. It has been so for years and years. Even if we start blogging on them, it won't help or do anything.

Since there is no other post about it. What is Israel's excuse for ramming a boat brining aid into gaza? Thats easy they have none. They give the same excuse the U.S gives when it messes up we thought it was terroist related. I am sickened that people in positions of power aren't speaking up louder. The only person from the U.S. who has spoken in support of the oppressed people of gaza has been Cynthia McCkinney who was on the rammed boat brining aid into gaza, and she said the pails into comparison to what is really going on.
