Blago to Appoint Illinois Pol to Obama Senate Seat
December 30, 2008 12:59 PM
Scandalized Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich will today appoint Roland Burris to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President-elect Obama.
Burris was Attorney General of Illinois from 1991 until 1995. Then-state senator Obama backed Burris over Blagojevich in the Democratic gubernatorial primary in 2002.
Blagojevich will make this announcement despite his attorney Ed Genson's Dec. 17 prediction that the governor would not appoint anyone to the Senate seat, citing the Senate Majority Leader's warning that they might not seat the embattled lawmaker's pick.
Asked if Blagojevich would name someone to fill the Illinois seat, Genson replied, "No. Harry Reid said that they're not going to accept anybody, so why would he do that?"
Senate Democrats had written to Blagojevich: "Please understand that should you decide to ignore the request of the Senate Democratic Caucus and make an appointment we would be forced to exercise our Constitutional authority under Article I, Section 5, to determine whether such a person should be seated."
-- Jake Tapper and Matt Jaffe
UPDATE: Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White has pre-emptively released a statement saying: "As I have previously stated publicly, I cannot co-sign a document that certifies any appointment by Rod Blagojevich for the vacant United States Senate seat from Illinois. Although I have respect for former attorney general Roland Burris, because of the current cloud of controversy surrounding the governor, I cannot accept the document."
From Springfield, Ill., to D.C., Senate Democrat Leaders Harry Reid and Illinois homeboy Dick Durbin saying: "Under these circumstances, anyone appointed by Gov. Blagojevich cannot be an effective representative of the people of Illinois and, as we have said, will not be seated by the Democratic Caucus."

I get the idea that the case against Blago was rushed to try and get him out of the way. Instead he's turning into a huge thorn for the democrats. The Chicago Machine comes first, even against the national democrat party. And keep in mind, this is the background that has produced Obama and parts of his new administration. Watch for much more of this.

It seems the Democrats are desperate to remove Blagojevich. Since legality is a secondary consideration for the Big D's, maybe a coup is in order.

Sen Reid, Durbin, and democrats in the senate look like idiots denying a qualified candidate because of the allegations and didnt bother to look into the legal ramaifications they are about to do something unconstitional for people that have been on the capitol for years they never even look at the damn document that swore to uphold and protect. My fellow democrats I think it time for term limits
US Rep. 3-two year terms only
US Sen. 2-six year only
Without term limits these same idiots who brought our first majority of both houses of congress will no doubt put us back in minority status in 2010

Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg is the name and arrogant power brokering is the game! :(
Caroline should keep the Schlossberg part and avoid the tainted Kennedy name!
Sarah Palin is an authentic,reformer and experienced servant leader and Governor who puts all the phony hypocrites to shame!

Isn't it Caroline K Slosshberg or something? Now you are talking about real corruption! :)

If you think Gov. Blago is bad, how about PEBO?
Ask Saul Alinskey's son how PEBO won the election! :)
Remember, Saul Alynsky was the guy who wrote "Rules for Radicals" and the guy PEBO said he learned the most from.
PEBO can't quite climb out of the cesspool!

Good for Gov. Blago! I hope he sings like a canary if reid and Pelosi... give him a tough time! :)
PEBO thugged his way through the same palm-greasing cesspool! :(

I think Blago would make a hell of a good president, much, better than Obama.

Lt Gov Quinn should just endorse the selection of Burris and end the circus. Burris appears untainted by the Blago issues and has promised to serve only to the end of Obama's term. Unless Quinn/Reid/Durbin et al have their own payoffs to make with the appointment, why not spare us the theatre?

"Why would anybody of integrity accept an appointment from Blago?"
Why would anybody of integrity accept a "president" who bought the Democratic nomination under false pretenses, then bought the "election"?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Belle Starr,
Please make sense. Are you telling me that I have performed the criminal act of selling my vote. Thats the only way the "election" could have been bought, i.e. if people like me were paid for our votes. I didn't accept any money. Please do not make false allegations against me.
Love it. The House had their chance last week to vote for a special election. They didn't do it for fear the people might go ahead and elect a republican...maybe someone like former Gov. Jim Edgar. Speaker Madigan(ruling father of ruling attorney general Lisa who wants to be governor)called the reps. in on the pretense of deciding a special election for the seat. However instead, he wanted to start impeachment proceedings. Rep. Black called it what is was as he had cut short his travel to visit a sick parent in order to return. Madigan and Blagojevich have been at war longer than Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn has wanted to be governor himself. By the way, at one time Blagojevich tried to get rid of Patrick Fitzgerald which adds fuel to Fitz's fire. As far as playing the race card, he was going to have to name an African American regardless. Personally, I would have loved to see the reaction if he would have named Lisa Madigan.
If the Democratic Caucus won't let Burris join their fairly foul club, couldn't he join Sanders as an independent?
Boy Gov is just picking someone who he never tried to extort money for his own political gain. Now, when the Feds release and play the tapes of Boy Gov trying to extort money from the other Senator wannabies, he can say, "See, I had not intention of picking any of them, I was just joking around."
The Mobocrats better watch their step: if Blago's still Governor, wouldn't the lawful thing be to seat him now, then UNseat him if indicated?
If Senators were unseated for having a cloud of corruption over their heads, the Senate wouldn't have a quorum.
Democrats pull the RACE CARD out again
Posted by: Carolinagirl | Dec 30, 2008 3:59:57 PM
Dear People of Illinois,
Do not be blindsided by an obvious attempt to play the race card by our Illinois governor. Our wanting a government of morals and ethics should more valuable to us than this plot intended to be created as a diversion against the truth. We have been used before,let us continue to progress and not regress. We as a country voted for Obama,not because of race but because of character, do not allow this appointment to undo what we have worked so hard to change. Illinois needs a special election!!!! The government always say we have no money but we have money for bribes, have a special election!! Oh yeah, I am African-American and I am in poverty but I am tired of corrput government!!!!
Why would anybody of integrity accept an appointment from Blago? Oh wait, we're talking Obamacrats here so that explains it. Just business as usual for the cabal that produced Blago, Daley, and the Great One. Will be interesting to see how Obama's followers will try to make excuses for his involvement in this scandal. Amazing isn't it? The Obama junta is not even in the White House yet and already mired in a major scandal.
Good pick. Too bad Obama had to try and buy the seat.
Why is everyone trying to railroad Blago. It's as if the Obama-Chicago crime family is trying to close ranks against Blago, when by their standards he was on;y doing what he was taught to do.
