Bobby Rush: Senators Blocking Burris from Senate Would Be Like Bull Connor and Other Infamous Racists of Yore

December 31, 2008 11:04 AM

Count Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., as one supporting Gov. Rod Blagojevich's appointment of former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris to the U.S. Senate.

"My prayers have been answered, because I prayed fervidly that the governor would ... appoint an African American," said Rush, per the Chicago Sun-Times. "We need to have not just one African American in the U.S. Senate. We need to have many African Americans in the U.S. Senate."

"Let me just remind you that there presently is no African-American in the U.S. Senate," Rush said at the Blagojevich press conference yesterday. "I will ask you to not hang and lynch the appointee as you try to castigate the appointer. I don't think that anyone -- any U.S. senator who's sitting in the Senate right now -- wants to go on record to deny one African-American for being seated in the U.S. Senate."

This morning on CBS, Rush upped the ante, comparing the prospect of the U.S. Senate refusing to seat Burris to Orval Faubus, George Wallace and Bull Connor blocking the progress of integration and civil rights.

"I'm sure that the U.S. Senate doesn't want to see themselves in the same position," Rush said.

In defiance of the Supreme Court, former Arkansas Gov. Faubus, a Democrat, in 1957 ordered the National Guard to prevent African American students from integrating Little Rock Central High School. Former Alabama Gov. George Wallace, also a Democrat, proclaimed "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" and spent much of his life preaching racism. Former Birmingham, Alabama, Public Safety Commissioner and Klansman Theophilus Eugene "Bull" Connor, also a Democrat, unleashed dogs and turned fire hoses on peaceful civil rights marchers.

When it was pointed out that President-elect Obama -- who unsuccessfully challenged Rush for his congressional seat in 2000 -- also believes Burris should not be seated because of the Blago taint, Rush said, "all these folks who are opposed to Gov. Blagojevich, they need to take a chill pill, we are still a nation of laws." He predicted "the U.S. Senate will have to accept him."

All of this is a huge turnaround for Mr. Rush. On December 9, the congressman said, “I believe that the acts that are alleged to have been committed by the Governor are so heinous that he has forfeited his right to appoint someone to fill the seat of President-Elect Barack Obama. My bottom line is that the Governor should not be the one to make the appointment to this important office."

I found Bobby Rush's comments at the Roland Burris press conference, Larry King Live and other media offensive, inflammatory, divisive and racists. Last time I checked a persons race was not a prerequisite to holding office. Regardless of how many this or that happen to be in a particular branch of government. His comments do nothing but fuel the flames of racism. I see people like him as not part of the solution, but more in line with what is wrong with government and our country. As a Statesmen and Representative for my District I find his comments on the National stage Embarrassing! David Wiersma

If this country was to receive an enema, they would stick the tube in Illinois.

"Bobby Rush supported ... Blair Hull in the 2004 Senate primary when Obama ... [was] on the ballot."

Bobby Rush is gonna whup Obama AGAIN. If "blacks" who are actually FROM Chicago start talking, Barry's gonna have all the "change" appeal of wet toast.

As for Hull, he was in the second set of "Obama" opponents sandbagged by Axelrod (a caper which foreshadowed the sandbagging of John Edwards with a sex "scandal"):

nytimes, 2007:
"Axelrod is known for operating in this gray area, part idealist, part hired muscle. It is difficult to discuss Axelrod in certain circles in Chicago without the matter of the Blair Hull divorce papers coming up. As the 2004 Senate primary neared, it was clear that it was a contest between two people: the millionaire liberal, Hull, who was leading in the polls, and Obama, who had built an impressive grass-roots campaign. About a month before the vote, The Chicago Tribune revealed, near the bottom of a long profile of Hull, that during a divorce proceeding, Hull’s second wife filed for an order of protection. In the following few days, the matter erupted into a full-fledged scandal that ended up destroying the Hull campaign and handing Obama an easy primary victory. The Tribune reporter who wrote the original piece later acknowledged in print that the Obama camp had “worked aggressively behind the scenes” to push the story. But there are those in Chicago who believe that Axelrod had an even more significant role — that he leaked the initial story. They note that before signing on with Obama, Axelrod interviewed with Hull."

MM-I don't know where you read that I was insulting working people in Chicago. Maybe you have a chip on your shoulder? It's a given in the state of Illinois that everything is about Chicago-maybe as it should be. We do read the Chicago Trib. and Sun Times down here, and we do know what goes on in Springfield. Our Illinois House should have voted for a special election to fill the senate seat. If you're insulted with the truth that Mr. Obama is not from Illinois.....

It obviously would have been better if Mr. Rush hadn't "upped the ante" because Obama's replacement would almost have to have been African American. Maybe behind the scenes it was looking otherwise. As for as the Governor, he was arrested-not indicted.

RL in Illinois

I guess people who build themselves from nothing is the Chicago Way. Guess what I proud to be part of the Chicago way. Downstate Illinois is no better then Upstate. There are corrupt politicians in rural and cosmopolitan areas. Our system is not the best but Blagojevich shouldn't have put race into it. But I guess growing up in Hawaii is the Chicago Way. We have good people Upstate. People who Work for a living, don't insult us.

I don't care how long Bobby Rush has been in Office, he should be impeached and not reelected. I am black and appalled that he is race baiting. Guess what Blagovich chose a black man not to give to a black community but to inoculate whoever he chose with a race response. This isn't because of race, everybody would go after any other person of any other race. The press conference yesterday was pathetic and to for Bobby Rush to inject a level of racism into this. Ladies and Gentlemen this is race baiting orchestrated by the Indicted Governor in order to stiff it to the President Elect.

Obama started all this crap when he had Rahm push Valerie Jarrett-and that's exactly what was done. He said he wasn't going to stick his nose in it and he did. What is it called when you want to appoint someone with no qualifications? A reward? Be honest. Burris is a "homegrown," downstate, experienced, qualified, logical choice who's paid his dues-no pun intended. Mr. Obama can't say that. He got where he is the "Chicago Way." Some people that have been around alot longer, might just take offense.

The U.S. Attorney in Chicago
is an ignorant, third-rate
lawyer - a disgrace to the
legal profession and law
enforcement.

The man, or jerk, deserves prison
time for defaming the governor's
character.

Meandering, tediously verbose
Obama is no match to
silver-tongued, sharp as a tack
Blago. BO is making a fool out
of himself. Blago is the
governor, Obama was a nobody
in Illinois.

PastyMole---"Why in the hell aren't these interviewers calling him on that?" i agree. that's exactly how you counter this hypocrisy. journalists should get away from the pc and go do a tough interview.

Hey Tapper, you might have included in your post the fact that Bobby Rush supported White Millionaire, Blair Hull in the 2004 Senate primary when Obama and fellow African American, Joyce Washington, were on the ballot.

Why in the hell aren't these interviewers calling him on that?

Posted by: PastyMole | Dec 31, 2008 6:19:17 PM

please!---there is very little for Obama to do with regard to the Palistinian situation. he is president-elect, not president. so if you are so concerned contribute to the Red Cross, Human Rights Watch, or even better call your congressmen and President Bush (but you don't care about Palistinians, you want to hate on Obama). and if you are so concerned about Burris and think this is a racist decision not to seat him, call your congressmen, file a law suit.

you're just here to trash Obama.

Bobby Rush is a fool. He needs to shut up and butt out. This does not concern him. He and the other Illinois legislators passed on the opportunity to have a special election, so he doesn't get a vote.

I can find no words to describe the type of "man" Blago is.

Posted by: Lori | Dec 31, 2008 6:07:32 PM

Steve_NJ: "Rush is a hypocrite.
Just like drug-addict Rush Limbaugh is a hypocrite." perfectly said, man. that's perspective.

Posted by: Paul Wall | Dec 31, 2008 6:03:26 PM

Log Cabin---let me guess "republican." it's a shame you hate Obama and don't want him in office. Bush and Cheney have done so much for gay people.

Posted by: Paul Wall | Dec 31, 2008 6:01:45 PM

As an African American, I am appalled at Bobby Rush and Burris for what they are doing!!!!!

This is not about RACE!!!!!

Are they, the new FOOLS????

Blago is just using them as UNCOUTH SHIELD!!!!

Stupid leading Stupidity!!!!!

What happen to ethics, honesty and integrity????

Posted by: sisterdearest09 | Dec 31, 2008 3:37:24 PM

i don't think this is about race. it's a matter of legality. somehow some people just don't get it.
