Congressman 'Cold Cash' Jefferson Ousted

December 07, 2008 6:57 AM

We've spent a lot of time covering New Orleans Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., these last few years, whether the 2006 FBI probe that turned up $90,000 in his freezer, or his 2007 indictment on bribery and corruption charges, or our 2005 scoopage about how, amid the chaos and confusion that engulfed New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck, he used National Guard troops to check on his property and rescue his personal belongings -- even while New Orleans residents were trying to get rescued from rooftops.

Alas, no more.

Yesterday voters in Jefferson's heavily black, Democratic district in New Orleans elected a little known Republican attorney named Anh "Joseph" Cao (pronounced "Cow.") Cao will be the first Vietnamese American to serve in Congress.

Geez. Should Whites be proud, too, when they get rid of White crooks?

Jefferson can join Ted Steven's new lobbying firm, "Crooks Need Love Too".

I think we could be headed in a color blind along with a party blind direction. Maybe that's part of the light some are seeing at the end of the tunnel. Unless it's an oncoming train.

Honestly, I'm glad he got voted out, even if he was a Democrat. We should hold ourselves to similar standards of accountability otherwise we are no better then the Republicans and Bush (no bid contracts, anyone?).

Also it's good to have some diversity in the Congress.

Leo,
He may be a joke, but by golly, he's OUR central planner, so why dont u cut him some slack?

kat,
Of course it's significant that he is from a heavily black Democratic district. And blacks should be proud to have voted the crooked black Democrat out of office.

I guess in that district, the people are sick to death of corrupt politicians regardless of Party. In light of the horrid GOP past 8 Bush years, I am somewhat surprised that they 'did decide' on a Republican, but considering that Jefferson is a Democrat, they probably felt better about putting a Pug into office which is somewhat understandable. Hopefully, Cao will do a good job for them. Good for him being a Viet Namese American pol and good luck as well.

Is it really significantf that Jefferson came from a "heavily black, Democratic " disrtict? But then, at least, he's not white, Republican, and chasing after pages.

Leo
The changes are here now. inthe Clinton years all the parents named they'r new born kids Monica. Now parents name they'r children Baraka Bashad, or Sarah, Or Michelle. In the Bush and Clinton years if you asked small kids what they vanna be when they grow up , they would say they vanna be a fireman or a policeman or astronat. But now all over my neighbourhood all the small kids vanna be community organizers.

Bush and Obama prove that you can put a presidential seal on an empty suit and it is still an empty suit.

Obama is a joke.

According to his website, part of New Orleans and part of Marrero.

Poor guy, railroaded and framed. How could he be corrupt? He's a Dem! Only Rethuglicans take bribes and steal from the masses.

I'm absolutely fascinated by the history, esp Bush's order to seal records, and D and R claims that the FBI/Justice Dept was out of line. A not-so-rare case of "both sides of the aisle" coming together -- because BOTH were terrified they may be next. A lot of skeletons in those buildings.

And he was re-elected. Not a strong argument (to me anyway) that voters are making decisions based on integrity and "goodness" of the candidate. Now he's been "ousted," but probably just because the other guy had prettier words or more money (wait, probably not more money, given Jefferson's income sources). His lineage and trials as a child trumped by an even better story of fleeing for one's life and finding a new home in America.

We do love a good story. And people want to Believe.

Hey Jake, Funny thing, For all these years and election cycles I never saw or heard coverage of Williams freezer burn act that amounted to more than a line or two from the MSM. I heard weeks about Foley and little about his predecessor banging everything in site. I've heard weeks about Trent Lott and little about Charlie Rangle from you. Every election cycle your "Culture or Corruption" against the GOP surfaces with a Cunningham headline. Nothing about Obama's criminal friends and on and on and on. Your a joke of a reporter as are most of the media.

hurrayy!!!! now its ten times likelier we'll replace this corrupt nutjob than if we were to run someone in the 2010 primary. its a D+28 district

Good for "the heavily black, Democratic district". Now, does this "heavily black, Democratic district" have a name, a number, anything to identify it by? Or shall it forever be known as "The Heavily Black, Democratic District"?
