Nancy Sutley to Head White House Council on Environmental Quality

December 10, 2008 10:46 AM

Democratic sources tell ABC News that President-elect Barack Obama will name Nancy Sutley, Los Angeles's deputy mayor for energy and environment, to chair his White House's Council on Environmental Quality.

The CEQ advises the President and Vice President on national and international environmental policy matters and works to ensure that federal agencies operate efficiently and in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa turned to Sutley to help him in his goal to transform L.A. into “the greenest big city in America," and Sutley has been on the case, retrofitting 500 of the city's oldest buildings to make them more energy efficient and imposing environmental standards on new large commercial buildings.

Sutley was an energy advisor to Gov. Gray Davis, was deputy secretary for policy and intergovernmental relations within the California Environmental Protection Agency, and served on the California State Water Resources Control Board.

During the Democratic primaries, Sutley was on Sen. Hillary Clinton's California Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender steering committee. The move by President-elect Obama to appoint someone who is a gay rights activist to a prominent position in his administration came after pressure mounting from the LGBT community.

Very poor choice of Sutley. The scam will be revealed soon, but so many have fallen for the globaloney warming tax.

If Obama wanted to really do the right thing, he would appoint a gay man to an important position.

I serve on a board with nancy and will confirm that she is smart and has a great sense of humor. However she also has insights into policy that are clear and directed.
I believe that the California meltdown in energy was a Wilson/Davis/Steve Peace issue which was a product of California's "group think". She is a brilliant pick and I am inspired by her choice. She will do us and Barack proud.

Thanks for the clarifications, Seth and JMiller. I wasn't familiar with her background, but assumed she was chosen on the basis of her qualifications and environmental background.

sometimes, altho' sad to think of this way, ..
to the folks who are so anti environmental standards.. one day you might wake up and have someone tell you the water you and your kids have been drinking is poisoned with contaminants, and you will know why your kids are always sick.... you will wonder why nobody did anything about it, and why nobody seems to care whether your family lives or dies....
this has happened in many parts of America already......

Nancy is an exceptionally talented and brilliant individual with tremendous experience and knowledge. She cares passionately about the environment and has the skill set to finally set our nation on a path to leadership in this field. I am very thankful that her potential is finally being recognized.

From California League of Conservation Voters' incoming CEO Warner Chabot:

“In summary, Nancy Sutley rocks! She is:
• smart (really, really smart);
• a rare, political/policy expert who really listens to all sides and doesn’t need to show off her superior knowledge in group situations;
• a great team player diplomatic and equally politically savvy, pragmatic and idealistic;
• one of the most ethical, effective environmental policy leaders in government.

Because she is a soft-spoken, modest persona, some politicians underestimate her authority and abilities. But when she briefs top policy leaders, her comprehensive knowledge and judgment quickly becomes apparent.

Nancy has a wry, sardonic sense of humor and great depth of knowledge across a wide range of environmental policy issues (e.g. energy climate, air, water, intergovernmental relations etc) and an idealistic yet very pragmatic approach to politics.
Today’s environmental issues are incredibly complex. Solutions must address economic, science, policy and political factors. Nancy’s career path demonstrates that political leaders seek her comprehensive ability to see the big picture and to balance the many elements of these issues.

Although the reference is a bit dated, if I was a basketball fan, I’d say she is the Jason Kidd of environmental policy – small, fast and deadly accurate.”

I too am familiar with Sutley. She is a classic political operator who is very skillful at cultivating contacts with powerful Democratic leaders. She has no administration abilities and knows nothing about the National Environmental Policy Act (which is CEQs main job). She is smooooth, though.

Wally - Hoe do you know she knows nothing about the National Environmental Policy Act? Did you give Surley a test on it? How did she get by not having administration abilities and not knowing environmental policies to have held the high ranking posts she has? You seem to be suggesting there's affirmative action working in her favor because she's a lesbian. If that's the case, I'd like to know and I'll start affecting certain mannerisms and styles to get ahead professionally.

It seems like people have also forgotten that ENRON was largely responsible for CA's energy crisis, not soley Davis. thanks!

LMAO. Anyone involved with ENERGY during the administration of GRAY DAVIS is currently a very BAD choice to run a lemonade stand, much less report directly to the POTUS.

Do Americans really have such a short attention span that they forget that Gray Davis got thrown out of office and replaced with a bad actor due to rolling power outages across the state????

I couldn't find anything about LGBT groups pressuring Obama for a gay rights appointee. I could have missed something. It would have been good to have some support for the claim. Because when you don't, it reads like speculation.

Jake, I have to say that I am in total agreement with the following quote by: Holly.

"Jake - You couldn't have re-phrased that last paragraph differently? When you say he named her after there was mounting pressure to do so both diminishes her as a qualified person and him as wanting to sincerely put a qualified person in the position. Maybe there was pressure, but it doesn't mean his naming her was because of that pressure."

The " Govern-ator " ARNOLD in California is the reason LA went green.
A solar panel on every commercial roof top plan was a great idea.

What did the Grey Davis era accomplish?

Posted by: dottydo | Dec 10, 2008 12:01:29 PM

Obama is clearly pandering to symbolism. Sutley served under Gray Davis and was in on his incredible bad decsion with regard to electrical power in this state which helped him be recalled from office. Obama is an empty suit.

Obamagate is getting bigger and bigger. networks trying to run defense for Team Obama..Team Obama resorting to using terms such as; "misspoke" " I don't recall", " was not aware"

I have watched Ms. Sutley's career with interest, and find her to be a capable administrator well-versed in the relevant environmental issues of the day. She has been effective in progressive local level administrations, I am curious to see how she will grow in a national role.

I am dismayed by news reports like this that suggest her selection has more to do with her sexual orientation, a factor that is immaterial to her understanding of the issues and ability to do the job. I expect better from the ABC News' Senior White House Correspondent.

The first environmental hysteric President. How cool is that.

The scam is easy to spot, needs the tax money.
