Ryan C,
"Common sense was pointing out Chris Cox's affiliation with Bernard Madoff and since this article is about his replacement that seemed fine. He said nothing about it being a Republican issue. Though I am not sure how Chris Cox is connected to Madoff specifically."
Chris Cox is a Republican. There was much garbage being spent by the right-wing faction that Cox is a democrat, but there has never been a basis for that spew.
The Republican Chris Cox is directly connected to Madoff in that his organization decided that Madoff's scam was legitimate when responding to consumer/investor complaints. The SEC found no fault with Madoff in its investigations. Chris Cox has since apologized, but has not said his commission's failure to enforce regs will amount to compensation to those screwed over. The same scenario holds true when it comes to Lehman's complaint over lack of SEC enforcment of regs which has caused 401Ks of millions to become nil.
Apoligies don't add plus symbols to retirement account balances! Apologies don't balance our budgets. Only the right to sue and be compensated for SEC failures under Cox's lack of enforcement will do. Jail is not even enough!
This is not a partisan issue. Cox is Republican, sure, but that is beside the issue. Republicans, Democrats, Independents and others used prudent investment principles with the expectation that the SEC would enforce laws/rules on the books. It was the SEC's lack of enforcement of LAW/RULE that amounted to our losses.
That is how Madoff brings this all to the fore. Madoff's blatent disregard for the law/rule and the SEC's cow-towing to the rich is what this is all about.
Baby steps. We'll all get our money back or the U.S. will never again achieve *U.S.* investor confidence.

BertieW,
"My point is you cant try to spin Madoff as a Republican like Common Sense did, since he is a major Democrat donor- do you dispute that?"
Wrong. I couldn't give a rats butt who Madoff is. My point is that Republican Cox, the consumer/investor protector looked the other way. "Heck of a job, Brownie!" At some point you'll get that. Cox is a republican and was intimidated by the Bush regime that dare question billionaires. That wasn't what Cox's appointment was supposed to be about except that it was the Republican spin that big money is honest, fair, best (and whatever they said without proof would trickle down to prosperity for all). This was indeed at the expense of the taxpayer, investor, consumer. This, indeed, was anti American taxpayer/consumer/investor.

BertieW quotes a FoxNews article...roflmao.
I looked up Madoff in opensecrets as FoxNews suggested.
There were 4 donations to Obama from people with the name Madoff.
Shanna Madoff Swanson is the only 1 I can say is def part of the Bernard Madoff family(she's his niece).
She gave $500.

Barf...another woman. She will cry and whine and pat folks on the head. Women are not men and should not be put in a job that was meant for a man. Don't call me ancient....just look at the Speaker of the House. She can't put two words together.

Google is your friend....
"As for President-elect Barack Obama, records show Madoff, his family and associates only contributed a few thousand dollars in total to his campaign."
A few thousand isnt $0, but it is inside the legal limit which is refreshing.
My point is you cant try to spin Madoff as a Republican like Common Sense did, since he is a major Democrat donor- do you dispute that?

Still waiting for the liberal PEUSA to appoint a single liberal or progressive to his Cabinet.
I guess he does not think any are qualified for anything.
Or maybe he is not who he said he was.

Do you know you are lying, or did you not even bother to go to the link you put in the very same post and notice that Bernard Madoff gave $0 to Obama's presidential campaign? Not one cent.
Comments just like yours are why people are starting to refer to the Republican party as "the party of stupid" as the Economist put it. The modern Republican party has gone beyond mere habitual lying, past a love of the Big Lie propaganda technique.

I long for the days when I could be surprised at the choice of who is going to have what in the upcoming cabinet jobs. All this knowing before the announcement...the thrill is gone. Like having a romp with the same partner after 20 years.

"GS gets a tax break for what?"
You saw the report- you tell us.
Tax breaks are created by the Congress to encourage activity that is deemed beneficial. If they didnt tell you how they reduced their taxable income its a stupid report and you should be watching a different channel. Try CNBC.

Shapiro.....another NeoCon in the
hierarchy....oops, sorry.

This just in from Rachel Maddow: Goldman Sachs (GS) pays only 1% tax. As you know, GS is the company that Republican Paulson used to run prior to his Bush appointment.
Paulson is the guy that holds the bailout for banks purse strings. Paulson allowed Lehman to collapse amidst GS bets against it and abilit to spread false rumors. At the same time, Paulson ensured GS's reorganization as a bank in order to receive bailout funds from taxpayers.
GS gets a tax break for what?

I only hope that some analysis is done on the FEC data widely reported. If I work for X, but I can't stand my co because they are right-wingers, my FEC requirement is to report my contribution as affiliated with X. This is not right.
X didn't contribute, I did.
Stats lie when the govt pretends to present unbiased data while limiting purchasable datasets.

I am going to guess that Mary Shapiro is a woman.
And Obama probably liked Madoff last month since he got money from him. Also:
"And, a review of campaign contributions at OpenSecrets.org shows that from 2005-2008, Madoff pumped well over $100,000 into the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, a political action committee guided by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York, Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota."

Now we're talking! Can he start today and get that republican Cox (Madoff lover, Lehman hater) ousted as of yesterday?!
