PEBO Reax to Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza

December 27, 2008 2:23 PM

“President-elect Obama is closely monitoring global events, including the situation in Gaza, but there is one president at a time," said Brooke Anderson, Obama's chief national security spokeswoman, in a statement.

We're told that the president-elect is watching developments closely, and receives daily intelligence briefings on the Mideast (and other regions) from an intelligence staffer who has accompanied him to Hawaii. As for the president-elect's views on the matter, one might refer to his previous reactions to similar events, from March and July of this year.

"Do you think Israel should negotiate with Hamas in Gaza?" he was asked in July, while in Israel.

OBAMA: "I don't think any country would find it acceptable to have missiles raining down on the heads of their citizens. The first job of any nation state is to protect its citizens. And so I can assure you that if -- I don't even care if I was a politician -- if somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I'm going to do everything in my power to stop that. And I would expect Israelis to do the same thing. In terms of negotiations with Hamas, it is very hard to negotiate with a group that is not representative of a nation state, does not recognize your right to exist, has consistently used terror as a weapon, and is deeply influenced by other countries. I think that Hamas leadership will have to make a decision at some point as to whether it is a serious political party seeking to represent the aspirations of the Palestinian people, and, as a consequence, willing to recognize Israel's right to exist and renounce violence as a tool to achieve its aims -- or whether it wants to continue to operate as a terrorist organization. Until that point, it's hard for Israel, I think, to negotiate with a country that -- or with a group that doesn't recognize Israel's right to exist."

And on March 2, 2008, the soon-to-be President-elect was quoted in a story blaming the Islamic fundamentalists in Hamas for the violence.

"The violence in Gaza is the result of Hamas' decision to launch rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and Israel has a right to defend itself," then-Sen. Obama said. "I remain very concerned about the fate of civilians and urge Israel to do all it can to avoid civilian deaths and to keep its focus on Hamas, which bears responsibility for these events."

"Why isn't anyone saying anything about Egypt's border with Gaza?"

As it happens, Mr. Nasrallah, head of Hezbollah, is saying PLENTY about it, which is not being widely featured, amazing as that may seem, in US "news":

"If the people took to the streets by the millions, could the police kill millions of Egyptians?" Nasrallah said. "People of Egypt, you must open this border by the force of your chests," he said."

Oh Google and see.

"Huffington Post has selectively filtered and censored comments by its readers that condemn the actions of Israel, and even suspended the accounts of myself and two other people I know. Not for profanity or any normal reason for censoring its readers, just FOR CRITICIZING ISRAEL'S ACTIONS."

Actually, HuffPo's been "in the 'heavily censored mainstream media' column" since sometime during the primaries -- it's the "Obama" machine way. During the same period, CommonDreams -- supposedly more leftish than HuffPo -- completely shut down Comments for a few days, then blocked comments from being viewable without a (traceable) click from the reader.

Reading The One's comments here should lead those who are interested in free expression to think about stock-piling copy paper -- for that fast-approaching day when it seems increasingly likely that the only remaining internet site accepting comments may belong to the "government", and the government belongs to a mob-friendly organization from Chicago.

Oil up those ditto machines, kids. Yer gonna need 'em.

Huffington Post, of all the sites you wouldn't expect to take sides on this issue, has come down squarely on the side of Israel. Between 10 and 12 am today their top headline was the Israeli attack on Gaza, and only 21 comments were allowed through, while hundreds and hundreds were left "pending". This is normally never the case on Huffington Post, where comments are usually moderated quickly. Huffington Post has selectively filtered and censored comments by its readers that condemn the actions of Israel, and even suspended the accounts of myself and two other people I know. Not for profanity or any normal reason for censoring its readers, just FOR CRITICIZING ISRAEL'S ACTIONS. But you know what? Even the comments they are now allowing to filter through show that the vast majority of subscribers to their blog oppose Israel's Nazi-like military aggression. I guess you can place Huffington Post in the "heavily censored mainstream media" column from here on out..

Soon those of you who voted for Obama will see your mistake. Obama is inept, speaks well but inept.

Obfusc8r,

HuffingtonPost has pics of the buildings targeted (and hit) by the Israelis on their site along with descriptions of what Hamas used the buildings for. I hope the American people will not be duped by the Palestinians crying too much force by the Israelis and that bogus all the Palestinians wanted was some food and equal rights crap.

I have no beef with anyone's race, ethnicity, religious belief, etc. This is an attack on terroristic, barbaric and uncivilized behavior. Of course Israel should defend its citizens!

Eli - Palestinians disregard for the welfare of thier own children is what is evident. An anyone forget that these are the people who strap bombs to thier own kids?

And Peace - you really need to read more news if you think the Palestinians don't use women and children as suicide bombing terrorists. There's some lovely footage of Palestinian families rejoicing about that very thing, and parading thier toddlers around in bomb vests.

Why isn't anyone saying anything about Egypt's border with Gaza? Israel isn't the only bordering country, and Hamas seems to have no trouble importing weapons and ammunition. Mysteriously, it's just food and medicine that they don't seem to be able to get thier hands on.

Is anyone outside of Gaza so gullible that they're taken in by this act?

"Israel/US has made Hamas into the scape goat for their own failed policies which lie at the root of Middle East violence." Palestinians condoning suicide bombing, a failure of Palestianians and/or Arabs to invest in Palestianian public education infrastructure or in Palestianian corporate investments is a failure by Israel or Americans? No, Palestianians and/or Arabs need to accept responsibilities for themselves instead of blaming everyone else as well as their own bigotry towards Israelis. Israelis need to accept responsibilities for their own bigotry towards Arabs as well.

Violence will stop when there is one state in which all its citizens are equal under the law. This means that Palestinians are recognized with equal rights as Jewish Israelis.

Israel/US has made Hamas into the scape goat for their own failed policies which lie at the root of Middle East violence.

Eli:
Get rid of the settlements, get rid of Hamas.

Posted by: Joe | Dec 28, 2008 3:26:37 PM

The Palestinians deserve our sympathy. Hamas does not. Hamas has chosen to align themselves with Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah. They are thugs who believe violence and provacation is the best way to change their society. This approach should be rejected by everyone.

If the leadership of the Palestinian people, whether that is Hamas or Fattah, rejects violence and stops lobbing bombs into Israel then Israel should be held to account for any break in peace. This simply has not happened. Hamas continues to try to provoke Israel and then tries to gain sympathy when Israel responds. Hamas has betrayed the Palestinian people - it really is that simply. They must go if we are to ever have a chance to resolve this conflict.

My heart goes out to them. Now I understand why Israel is the most hated nation. Sick country

Why are we ( united states) protecting these animals?

Posted by: Mike | Dec 28, 2008 3:09:07 PM

Huh, some people still think the earth is flat...i cant and wont argue with them.

please do yourself a favor and do some (evidently) much-needed research . if you are objective and thorough you will find that the current problem(s) had their "roots" sometime prior to 1947 i believe...

Common Sense - I don't know what to take from your writings. Maybe you did vote for Obama, but your words are typical of the neoconservative movement.

I went to engineering graduate school at a major state university and I was one of the very few Americans there. I also work at a national laboratory where we have problems finding qualified Americans that can get a security clearance that are both capable and competent. Anyways that is getting away from the issue at hand in this blog.

Posted by: Huh | Dec 28, 2008 2:29:49 PM

Carlo - Well stated sir. That is the underlying problem.

Posted by: Huh | Dec 28, 2008 2:25:36 PM

It is in the best interest of Israel to do the right thing because the more people get to know the truth the more credibility they lose. This is not abut anti-semitism because Palestinians are also semites. It is about bullying, occupation and forceful acquisition of land.

Posted by: Carlo | Dec 28, 2008 2:24:24 PM

huh,

People here on H1b visas are occupying my country and stealing American jobs and crippling our economy. That does NOT give me the right to start throwing missiles at India or H1b body shops! If I were to do something as uncivilized as that, India would have EVERY right to fly planes over my uncivilized arse to put a stop to it.

I am nobody's Israeli lover (nor hater), but what part of defending yourself and human rights don't you get? Maybe its me that isn't getting a full picture, but I've read up on both sides and I don't see how Hamas is justified or how Israel should be shunned for defending itself against terrorism.

The whole thing is disturbing. Hamas seems to want to make Israel the villain, here. But, look up some of what is being propagandized on middle east tv and you'll see why I am suspect of media displays of protests against Israel on this.

Hamas's propaganda remind me of the hateful RNC campaign ads that ran during the election campaign. You be the judge of what you find should you view what's out there on the 'net.

I only hope that the Palistinians rise up against their real enemy; it doesn't look like their enemy is Israel.

Posted by: Common Sense | Dec 28, 2008 2:21:58 PM

lol - I disagree with you what the root problem is. Sorry we can't come to a consensus.

Posted by: Huh | Dec 28, 2008 2:20:30 PM

I agree with A.J.'s point of view.
The US authorities are so biased in favor of Israel. They can't get away from the idea that Israelis have ALWAYS been the victims of conflicts. Listen to the statement from the White House: "The United States urges Israel to avoid civilian casualties as it targets Hamas in Gaza," Wow! This means that they are approving the Israelis' attacks on Gaza as long as they avoid civilian casualties. And how about this: "Hamas's continued rocket attacks into Israel must cease if the violence is to stop. Hamas must end its terrorist activities if it wishes to play a role in the future of the Palestinian people," Why are US officials condemning the Hamas when they are the victims of the Israeli's attack!? I am not supportive of Hamas necessarily, but I just want to criticize the US officials' biased view on Israel.
