Some Frank Talk About the Need for Obama to Step Up
December 04, 2008 7:55 PM
"There's only one president at a time," President-elect Barack Obama has repeated time and time again in recent weeks.
But a powerful House Democrat disagrees. Zero is more like it, says Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and so Obama better step up.
"At a time of great crisis with mortgage foreclosures and autos, he says we only have one president at a time," Frank told consumer advocates Thursday, according to the Associated Press. "I'm afraid that overstates the number of presidents we have. He's got to remedy that situation."
How to remedy that?
"He's going to have to be more assertive than he's been," demanded Frank.
But while the Massachusetts lawmaker chairs the House Financial Services Committee - which will hear from Detroit's "Beg Three" tomorrow - his colleague in the upper chamber, Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., heads the Senate Banking Committee, which just welcomed the auto executives to Capitol Hill today.
And after today's hearing, Dodd gave a much more complimentary of Obama's work thus far.
"The President-elect has to be - look, as he said, 'one president at a time'," Dodd told reporters. "Now he's done a lot already by announcing his economic team, announcing a stimulus package, meeting with governors. He's made some very important symbolic gestures, a lot more involved than certainly any of us who have been around for a while with presidents-elect. So I welcome what he's done already."
Just yesterday, Obama weighed in with a preview of today's auto executives' encore appearance in Washington, following their much-ridiculed visit two weeks ago.
"It appears, based on reports that we've seen, that this time now the executives from these automakers are putting forward a more serious set of plans," Obama said at his Wednesday news conference in Chicago. "I don't want to comment on them before I've actually heard and seen what they're putting forward. But I'm glad that they recognize the expectations of Congress, certainly, my expectations that we should maintain a viable auto industry, but we should also make sure that any government assistance that's provided is designed for a -- is based on realistic assessments of what the auto market is going to be and a realistic plan for how we're going to make these companies viable over the long term."
Some Capitol Hill critics have urged Obama and Bush to do more to improve the chances of an automaker bailout getting approved by Congress, but Dodd said that rather than looking to Obama to change the situation, lawmakers should demand more from the Bush Administration.
"I don’t think he wants to get drawn in, and I wouldn't blame him, in a situation that he could not really effectuate," Dodd said of the President-elect. "It really is up to the existing team that has the ability and authority to respond within a matter of hours to a situation. That's their job. The President is still the President."
And not only could Bush do more, noted Dodd, but so too could Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, currently on a trip abroad. And Fed chief Ben Bernanke, also.
"The Secretary of the Treasury is in China right now. It's time to come home. We've got a serious problem on our hands. And I realize that he's got a meeting over there, but we need him here. And I need the Federal Reserve to step up as well."
Obama warned yesterday that he is keeping a watchful eye on how Paulso allocates the $700 billion Troubled Assets Relief Program funds.
"What I can assure you is that my team is very active in reviewing what's already been done to ensure that when we hit the ground running on January 20th, that any taxpayer money is going to be properly spent," he said, encouraging plans to help homeowners in an effort to help the economy as a whole.

With Chris Dodd, Barney Franks and Obama looking out for our economic future I can sleep good at night. Right. Obamas new plan is to build roads to get the economy going? What a plan, I guess he thinks he is Roosevelt and he is going to restart the CCR program. Were in trouble here people. i wonder if we can have an election annuled?

This country is headed for a depression under an Obama administration. The man is a fake. Where is the "Change you can believe in" that he promised.
Meanwhile, I would like to express my appreciation to President Bush for keeping this country safe and free from attacks for more than seven and a half years. Great Job, Mr President Bush.

We could threaten our enemies with this;Stop messing with us or we will have Bush and Cheney run your country for 8 years. Talk about WMD!!

He is not president yet! I guess people will just have to wait until he is. It is admirable that he is getting his team in place but that does not mean he makes decisions now.

James - It's the same thing with healthcare. Had the Federal government never created Medicare, we wouldn't be in the healthcare mess we are now, either. Yet, people think the government can fix it - when they created it in the first place.

It amazes me that people are anxious for the government to get more involved in "handling" the economic crisis when they are responsible for it in the first place. The economic trouble we have today is directly related to the Community Reinvestment Act, which came into existence in 1977. This legislation has, over time, morphed into a vehicle for direct interference by congress in the dealings of our banking industry. Congress (mainly Democrats but also some Republicans) has applied pressure to the banking industry to accept home mortgage loans that they would not otherwise take on based on the risk of default. This means of extortion by congress was pursued to force banks to give money to low income and minority home owners who simply could not afford the loans if any unforeseen financial hardship hit them (IE: higher gas prices). Congress further compounded the problem by pushing for the formation of derivatives (under Clinton administration) based on these bad mortgages. This was done to mask the extreme risk found in this strategy, thus making the eventual failure much worse. The economic collapse we have seen has been brought about by an estimated failure rate in the mortgage market of six percent. This is shocking. What if the failure rate goes to 20 percent or 30 percent? The people who were the biggest proponents of this scam such as Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, Maxine Waters, and yes – Barack Obama, are now asking us to let them “fix” the mess they created. I for one am not impressed and certainly not hopeful that this group can fix anything and fully expect them to make the situation much worse. If we want to improve our economy and return sanity to the laws that govern our nation we should send congress and the new administration on vacation. Hopefully they will go somewhere where they cannot do any more “fixing”.

Barney Frank needs to get off the bottle for a week or 2 before he opens his mouth...When he slathers, I cringe.

MikeMo1947 - it allows them to use the terms, but he still isn't LEGALLY President-elect until the 2nd Monday after the 1st Tues. in Dec. The Act uses the term "apparent".

Bush has essentially crawled into a fetal position for his last month and a half.
He's the one saying hardly anything about the economic crisis, even though he's still President. We seem to hear more about Obama working out economic plans while Bush says hardly anything about the economic crisis.
It's been a long eight years.
January 20th, 2009 can't come soon enough.
(Oh, and Dave, why don't we just stoop to the terrorists level? What moral authority have we then, to call ourselves a beacon for human rights and democracy then? And how about we actually make sure the guy is a terrorist first? Do you know how many ppl the CIA ended up releasing after detaining them for years and being forced to conclude, they were not terrorists? Liberals are traitors? Har, har, you're just such a card, you know.)

ellsbells930 - Technically Obama is the President-Elect as defined by the Presidential Transition Act of 1963.

What do you expect from a joke like Barney Frank? He was wrong, and he was insulting, and he should be ashamed of himself. I am tired of the Bush-bashing on the Hill and the eagerness of folks like Frank to get Obama involved prematurely. Remember, barney, if Obama wanted to deal more directly with this mess early, he could have maintained his seat in the Senate and taken part in the lame-duck session. He had the good sense not to do so.
I'm heartened to see multiple posters pointing out the Frank is complicit in starting this financial mess in the first place and should not have been returned to COngress, let alone be taken seriously on this matter when he lectures others on how they should behave.

howwouldiknow - if President Bush stepped down now, then VP Cheney would become President, NOT Obama. I can't believe how many people do not understand this fact. And what really scares me is that some of these people voted!!

The RealDave
Dropping water down terrorists noses is not torture.
The Patriot Act was voted through by both democrats and republicans.
Saddam had mustard gas and murdered an estimated 700,000. Why are liberals all about fighting for freedom as long as no one gets hurt. It's kind of like liberals love of free speech until you say something that they don't want to hear.
As I said earlier, liberals would rather invite holocaust denying tyrants to speak at their college and call the 9/11 bombers "freedom fighters" than give bush an ounce of credit for keeping their flower power butts safe.
Bottom line........liberals are traitors, have been for years, and nothing will change their resin-filled minds.

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) is now in trouble with the House ethics committee for a variety of ethics violations. He has alot to say about how our tax money is spent. But he'll probably skate. Isn't it great!

It's time for more people to start asking him to step DOWN. After watching the economy respond to him for the last month, does anybody really want this for another 4 years?
Posted by: howwouldiknow | Dec 5, 2008 4:41:53 PM
Don't blame the economy on Bush - like he said to Charlie Gibson - "it was happening before I entered in president and during I entered in president" - what a defense!

But a powerful House Democrat disagrees. Zero is more like it, says Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and so Obama better step up. Yeah, choosing this cabinet is easy! Whats going to happen when he has to really get moving on the critical issues that face this nation? Talk is cheap!! Lets see if this super hero really has any guts and any intelligence besides bs!! GOOD JOB TAPPER! GOOD ARTICLE!!!

There is no end to the ignorance by some people. The Republicans gained control of the House in 1994 and did not lose it until 2006. Where the heck have some of you been over the years? Mars, Saturn, or Jupiter? GET OVER YOURSELVES!!! Barack Obama WON the election.... PERIOD! I'm sure those of you who are still ticked aren't going to support him no matter what happens!!! Stop blaming him for everything that has gone wrong in Washington for the past 8 years. The man hasn't even been sworn in yet so he can't "step up." HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY POWER TO ENFORCE ANYTHING YET!!!

The best thing Bush could do at this point is absolutely nothing. He's done quite enough, thank you, just look around at the catastrophic mess he will leave due to his incredible incompetence. Complete and utter failure - the worst president in the history of this country. It will take us decades to recover.

Dave,
Bush could have been impeached for a wide variety of crimes he committed while in office, just a few for you to mull over:
1) Violation of treaties he was constitutionally obligated to uphold.
2) Authorizing the use of torture by his administration.
3) Ordering leaks of classified information for political purposes.
4) Authorizing electronic spying on US Citizens at home and abroad.
5) Criminal Negligence in the effort to bring to justice, Osama Bin Laden.
6) Overseeing the greatest looting of a countries’ coffers by private industry seen in any country in the history of humanity.
One big difference between everyone who "thought" Sadaam had WMD, and the Bush administration?
Only the Bushies were willing to wage an optional war over questionable intelligence. NO other responsible leader in the world thought the intelligence on Iraqi WMD was justification for going to war. Sanctions? Yes. Inspections, yes. War? No.
Which leads to the greatest crime committed by a presidential administration in recent history, the death of thousands of our soldiers over either a mistake, or incompetence of leadership. Your choice.
