What Color Is the Sky in Gov. Blagojevich's World?
December 11, 2008 9:09 AM
One Democrat quipped to me yesterday that all Democratic Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has to do to present a compelling insanity defense in his pending corruption case is to walk into the courtroom and present the judge with the criminal complaint against him.
After all, the argument goes, this is a man -- a lawyer, a former Cook County assistant prosecutor, for the love of Pete -- who knew he was under federal investigation and yet was brazenly (allegedly) trying to sell a Senate seat, at one point saying into a telephone -- while discussing what kind of quid pro quo he could weasel -- "I want to make money.”
The complaint says that Blagojevich "analogized his situation to that of a sports agent shopping a potential free agent to various teams, stating 'how much are you offering, [President-elect]? What are you offering, [Senate Candidate 2]? . . . Can always go to. . . [Senate Candidate 3].'"
Even more bizarrely, Blago seriously contemplated appointing himself to the Senate seat.
“Unless I get something real good for" appointing Obama friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett, "sh*t, I’ll just send myself, you know what I’m saying?" Blagojevich says, according to the complaint.
In this hypothetical swap with Team Obama the governor talks about trying to become Secretary of Health and Human Services, an ambassador, or leader of a union affiliated organization. He talks about President-elect Obama securing a spot for Mrs. Blagojevich on some corporate boards. And if none of that works out, Blagojevich posits that the President-elect could help him create a non-profit organization he could head, with Mr. Obama getting his "friend Warren Buffett or some of those guys to help us on something like that.”
He really thinks that the President-elect, who wouldn't even let him speak at the Democratic convention, would ask Buffett or Bill Gates to contribute millions of dollars to a non-existent non-profit that he can head in exchange for the Senate seat?
Huh?
Even more astoundingly, the complaint says that the governor had a "desire to remake his image in consideration of a possible run for President in 2016..."
Right. A presidential run. Of course.
"It's just such a bizarre state of mind, that Gov. Blagojevich had to be in to even think this was possible," former Democratic Congressman and Judge Abner Mikva told ABC News.
Mikva used the word "delusional" to describe the governor.

In nomine Daley, Blago, et spiritus
Obama.......may all you voters have
a merry Christmas season.

He's beyond narcissistic, even beyond sociopathic. He's got to be bipolar.

"Twinkle toes" Emanuel will have a few
things to say to the inevitable grand
jury. If Blago is so dangerously deranged, why did Obama back him in
2006? I guess the Dems have a couple
of skeletons in their closet.....even
though we all agree that the Pubs are
the "party of corruption".

There's nothing illegal about
the governor's actions. He was
only doing a mafia boss
impersonation for the stupid
Feds who were taping his
private conversations with
his advisors. He was mocking
at the Feds.
Case dismissed.
Posted by: anon | Dec 12, 2008 4:08:41 AM
Blago is smarter than the Feds.
The Feds are wasting taxpayers'
money.
Blago knew he was being listened
in on and gave the G-men a bunch of
bull.
The G-men have no evidence that the
governor actually solicited a bribe
from any specific individual
or organization.
A 76-page complaint. Where's
the beef?

Blagojevich is power crazed and used to getting away with an incredible amount. He's a crazy as a fox crook. I don't really know how much of an anomaly he is in the political world.

Almost anyone could claim an insanity defense to avoid criminal prosecution. The courts are well provisioned in dealing with such weak pleas. In a few cases, an insanity defense is appropriate; and in such cases the defendant rarely pursues such a defense.

Blago is like Fredo in Godfather, he cant handle thinking he was passed over...
Fredo/Blago: I didn’t know it was going to be a wiretap, Barack. I swear to God I didn’t know it was going to be a wiretap. Adviser 1 bumped into me in Downers Grove and he said that he wanted to talk. He said that you and Candidate 5 were in on a big deal together and that there was something in it for me if I could help him out. He said that you were being tough on the negotiations but if they could get a little help they’d close the deal fast. It’d be good for the Combine…He said there was something in it for me on my own!
Michael/PEBO: I’ve always taken care of you, Blago.
Fredo/BLAGO : Taken care of me! You’re like my kid brother, you take care of me? Did ya ever think about that, huh? Did ya even once think about that? Send Blago off to do this! Send Blago off to do that! Let Blago take care of some Mickey Mouse highway bill somewhere! Send Blago to pick somebody up at the airport! I’m your senior in the Combine, Barack; and I was stepped over.
Mike/PEBO: It was the way the machine wanted it.
Fredo/Blago: It ain’t the way I wanted it! I can handle things; I’m smart. Not like everybody says like dumb; I’m smart, and I want respect!
Michael/PEBO: Is there anything you can tell me about this investigation? Any more?
Fredo/Blago: Senate candidate 3, he belongs to Fitz.
Michael/PEBO: Rod, you’re nothing to me now. You’re not an associate, you’re not a friend. I don’t want to know you or what you do. I don’t want to see you in DC. I don’t want you near the White House. When you see Daley I want to know a day in advance so I won’t be there. You understand?

What will this, and other Illinois scandals, do to Chicago's efforts to host the 2016 Olympics?

Brad -
As I understand it, he had a falling out with his father-in-law, Machine Alderman Richard Mell, which generated a number of accusations that started the investigation.

BO is a liar and a fraud.
"I had no idea that Rev Wright was saying those things"
That makes BO a liar
-BO sat in the pew for 20 years and wrote a book which he titled after 1 of the rev's speeches audacity of hope.
"Bill Ayers is just a guy in my neighborhood"
That also make BO a liar
-BO sat on several boards with him and also attended several parties at ayers' house.
BO never liked to say the Pledge of Allegiance or wear the flag lapel pin, now he struts around like he is Mr pro-America.
-That makes BO a fraud

"Oh, wait: that was Obama, voting for the bailout right before he high-tailed it out of the Senate ahead of time."
Don't forget, McCain voted for the bailout too.

Sadly, Blagojevich's sense of invincibility was nurtured by the Chicago political culture. Moreso by that, than by any self delusions he may have.

Does anybody wonder WHY he has been under FBI investigation for 3 years? What triggered that? Or, are all politicians automatically investigated when they serve in government? I don't think they ALL are.
I'm not sticking up for the crook, but I would like to know what took place 3 years ago to start the FBI surveillance on him? It all sounds funny to me.
A big game the politicians play to see what they can get away with without getting caught, and to eliminate the competition that are too dumb or arrogant enough to get caught.

The only way to ensure that the rest of the world would be safe from this maniac is to lock him up and throw away the key. Surely he should not declare "insanity" and then get off almost scott-free to do further damage elsewhere! He is not "insane" in the real sense; he's just a greedy, unethical, wicked bastard, and should be made to face the consequences. He should not be allowed to get away this time.

BOisafraud---just some evidence. and your hope for street riots and a military mowdown of protesters is quite sad, not new, just sad. if you think he is a fraud, prove it. so far not one of the conspiracy theories has panned out.

Even Blagojevich would be better than Daschle. What happened to Dr. Dean -- the guy who won the election for these frauds?

Being a narcissist isn't insanity nor are delusions of grandeur nor is possessing a sense of entitlement. Blag is, after all, a card carrying member of the me first generation with a super-sized ego, which also isn't enough to support an insanity plea. He's also demonstrated a mile-wide streak of idiocy, which also isn't grounds for an insanity plea.

"a taco or two short of a combination plate."
A piece or two of silver short of a sellout, you mean? Like the leaders who voted the "bailout"(s), you mean?
Oh, wait: that was Obama, voting for the bailout right before he high-tailed it out of the Senate ahead of time.
Did Daddy O engineer this crisis for now, to keep his name -- rather than his right-wing appointees' -- at the top of the news? And to keep the Inauguration, if any, free of breaking news from Chicago?

"Retro soviet vibe of the neo-Democrats Obama organization." What on earth does that mean?
Are Gulag internments awaiting us?
--> "Awaiting"? What do YOU think?
Will certain names from the past no longer be uttered in public?
--> Yes. Along with certain names, perhaps, from the present -- and names now NEVER mentioned -- including "Alice Palmer", maybe -- discussed deeply.
Are the thought police on the way?
--> Been here and gone.
