What Color Is the Sky in Gov. Blagojevich's World?

December 11, 2008 9:09 AM

One Democrat quipped to me yesterday that all Democratic Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has to do to present a compelling insanity defense in his pending corruption case is to walk into the courtroom and present the judge with the criminal complaint against him.

After all, the argument goes, this is a man -- a lawyer, a former Cook County assistant prosecutor, for the love of Pete -- who knew he was under federal investigation and yet was brazenly (allegedly) trying to sell a Senate seat, at one point saying into a telephone -- while discussing what kind of quid pro quo he could weasel -- "I want to make money.”

The complaint says that Blagojevich "analogized his situation to that of a sports agent shopping a potential free agent to various teams, stating 'how much are you offering, [President-elect]? What are you offering, [Senate Candidate 2]? . . . Can always go to. . . [Senate Candidate 3].'"

Even more bizarrely, Blago seriously contemplated appointing himself to the Senate seat.

“Unless I get something real good for" appointing Obama friend and adviser Valerie Jarrett, "sh*t, I’ll just send myself, you know what I’m saying?" Blagojevich says, according to the complaint.

In this hypothetical swap with Team Obama the governor talks about trying to become Secretary of Health and Human Services, an ambassador, or leader of a union affiliated organization. He talks about President-elect Obama securing a spot for Mrs. Blagojevich on some corporate boards. And if none of that works out, Blagojevich posits that the President-elect could help him create a non-profit organization he could head, with Mr. Obama getting his "friend Warren Buffett or some of those guys to help us on something like that.”

He really thinks that the President-elect, who wouldn't even let him speak at the Democratic convention, would ask Buffett or Bill Gates to contribute millions of dollars to a non-existent non-profit that he can head in exchange for the Senate seat?

Huh?

Even more astoundingly, the complaint says that the governor had a "desire to remake his image in consideration of a possible run for President in 2016..."

Right. A presidential run. Of course.

"It's just such a bizarre state of mind, that Gov. Blagojevich had to be in to even think this was possible," former Democratic Congressman and Judge Abner Mikva told ABC News.

Mikva used the word "delusional" to describe the governor.

"Retro soviet vibe of the neo-Democrats Obama organization." What on earth does that mean? Are Gulag internments awaiting us? Will certain names from the past no longer be uttered in public?
Are the thought police on the way?

Blago doesn't need to be "marginalized" as crazy. Any Democractic public official who tries to extort money from Illinois' largest, most influential and most Republican newspaper would probably fit any normal person's definition of "crazy."

Anyone who would try to run extortion scam on a U.S. Senate appointment while knowing that he's the subject of a federal investigation and is likely being wire tapped is probably a taco or two short of a combination plate.

This guy's behavior is so off-the-wall that he makes the old Hague, Tweed, and Prendergast machines look as if they were lacking in ambition.

This guy is obviously delusional and arrogant. He may even be narcisstic. That does NOT make him insane however. The insanity defense would be ludricous in this situation.

He just became increasingly concerned and lost his patience thinking that he wasn't going to get his share. If he had just taken a pill, appointed the person who he knew Obama wanted, he would have been rewarded for his efforts through the union or some other channel.

At any rate, you get in power in Chicago by making deals and Chicagoans love a guy who fights. The press asked old man Daley if he awarded his son, the current Mayor, the multi-million dollar insurance contract at O'Hare on a no bid basis. Daley replied, "Yeah! He's my son. What would you do?" That was a good enough answer for everyone. They may not have liked it, but they understood.

Everything is pretty much the same these days unless you step on the wrong toes. Chicagoans will be shaking their heads in bars for a long time wondering and theorizing about who the Governor made mad. There will occasionally be a few punches thrown. No one will go to jail. It's all good fun.

What is the difference between what Blagojevich did and Congress and the Senate members taking donations from the banks to pass the bank bailout against 90% of the taxpayer's wishes? What is the difference between this and Obama making campaign promises to the Unions to get their support and campaign donations? What is the difference between this and Shelby, having foreign car manufacturers in his state and taking their campaign donation and then trying to get the domestic automaker loans defeated? What is the difference between what Blagojevich did and everyone running for any electable office and taking money from special interest to work on their behalf? At least Blagojevich was open and honest about what he was doing. Your Kleptocracy teaches your politicians to behave like this. It's just business as usual. The FBI should be tracking every campaign donation and every legislative vote.

Your federal government is suppose to support and protect you, not the banks, businesses, and other special interests. You should be voting for people who don't take special interest money. There are very few of them, but they should be in office.

He is a liberal democrat- aren't they all insane to begin with?

The term bipolar comes to mind when I've seen what the Gov. has been up to. A run for the presidency in 2012? Does anyone think that's normal behavior. Ryan was corrupt, but he wasn't nuts.

"Is that what transparent means?"

Transparent means it's invisible, right?

Since before a year ago. Illinois already new he was stupid, now we know he is crazy because he knew he was being tapped yet he still incriminated himself. Either he is an idiot or he is crazy.

"If Fitzgerald had anything on Obama don't you think he would go after him first considering he is the President elect."

"The harder they come, the harder they fall" . . . what if setting up "Obama" as instant PE is part of the play to which the "political" principals haven't been privy ... and all The CHANGEling's bait-and-switch has hahaha been for nothing AND is about to bite him terminally in the butt?

Posted by: Belle Starr | Dec 11, 2008 1:11:46 PM

Uh huh. Now its Blagojevich is nuts.

And Axelrod mispoke.

And multiple KHQA reports never happened.

Is this supposed to be some Jedi mind trick? Is that what transparent means?

Ironically even with Illinois corrupt governors problems (mostly because corruption has become embedded in the governing system hence the term "Business as Usual") Red states have the most corrupt governments. Louisiana, Mississippi, Kentucky , Ohio are all more corrupt then Illinois. New Jersey is also but everybody knows that. Although Fitzgerald hasn't directly gone after Mayor Daley but he has gone after his inner circle.

Fitzgerald is a bi-partisan curruption hawk. He went after Repulican Illinois Former Governor Ryan - put him jail for 6 years. He went after Rezco put him in jail, now he is going after Blagojevich (his main target). If Fitzgerald had anything on Obama don't you think he would go after him first considering he is the President elect. Apparently Gov Blag was more of a threat then OBama was.... Logic escapes some people.

Posted by: MM | Dec 11, 2008 12:41:37 PM

Blagojevich was a PROSECUTOR? With that kind of behavior, maybe he should pardon all those he threw in jail before he resigns!

Now what else might be afoot in Crook County? Merry Fitzmas, everyone!

Posted by: Steve Z | Dec 11, 2008 12:39:15 PM

Moving to marginalize Blagojevich as "crazy" seems right in line with the retro-Soviet vibe of the neo-Democrats' "Obama" organization to date.

"Will Blago spill the beans first, or will it be Rezko??"

Gosh, maybe Jesse Jackson pere could do it -- his namesake could always get work outside Chicago politics, after all.

Posted by: Alice Palmer | Dec 11, 2008 12:12:38 PM

Blago should be locked up not only for what he proposed doing, but also for the smell that is currently wafting over all Illinois democrats.

"Will Blago spill the beans first, or will it be Rezko??"

Given the media situation, how will the "news" get out of Chicago?

Posted by: Alice Palmer | Dec 11, 2008 12:05:58 PM

I've heard is suggested that Blago could conceivably get his lawyers to plead insanity in his case. That would be believable, too...

Posted by: matt | Dec 11, 2008 11:33:26 AM

If barry has anything in his past in regards to favors/bribes he needs to be held accountable. If anyone in the media has covered or is covering for him now, that news station's image will never recover.

If riots happen across the country because he does not become prez, so be it. Our military is freakin awesome, they can certainly handle some thug protestors.
