Congressional Republican Leaders Set a Skeptical Table for Monday Stimulus Chat

January 02, 2009 4:33 PM

In anticipation of their meeting Monday afternoon with President-elect Obama and their Democratic colleagues, the leaders of the House and Senate Republican minorities have issued statements about the stimulus package.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., in a statement this afternoon said "that every dollar needs to be spent wisely and not wasted in the rush to get it spent. And we believe that his admonition to 'go through the federal budget -- page by page, line by line -- eliminating those programs we don't need, and insisting that those we do operate in a sensible cost-effective way,' should apply to this, potentially the largest spending bill ever considered by the Congress. And we hope that Democrats in Congress don't attempt to shut the American taxpayer out of this process by trying to pass a bill that hasn't been the subject of bipartisan review and that hasn’t been available for public inspection."

Said House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, "I am concerned by media reports that suggest the Democrats' emerging proposal may cost taxpayers up to one trillion in new government spending, with little debate or public scrutiny of the still-unseen legislation. Let's be clear: it is essential that this legislation be debated in a fair, open, and honest way. Congress should have public hearings in the appropriate committees, the text of the measure should be made available online for the American people to review for at least one week, and it should be free from special-interest earmarks. This is the taxpayers' money, and they deserve to know their hard-earned tax dollars aren't being wasted."

Republican leadership abdicated responsible statesmanship long, long ago. The very thought of their perusing each item on the stimulus package and lamenting wastage is laughable. They, and no other party, ran up the national debt by borrowing, sold our industries down the drainpipe, filled the pockets of greedy incompetent CEOs and climbed into bed with any lobbyist who would bankroll their reelection. If the Republican Party dies tommorrow it shall not be a moment too soon. The leadership should sit down and listen to their own tripe and measure how much substance they offer.

Come on Seah-- the Republican administration has bankrupt the county--billions for Iraq. Then under Bush the "Wall Street got drunk." You were living on earth like all of the rest of us during the past 8 years. All of the blaming the Democrats when they weren't in power is stupid. As for all of you who blame Congress-- the Democratic lead one-- we only were in control over the past 2 years. So get your facts straight because no one was asleep and the propaganda is not sticking. The Rovian era is OVER!

SEAH - The "DEMOCRATS"have lined their own pockets! ROFLMAO

Ask Senator Mitch McConnell about Martin Sullivan, former CEO of AIG who received a $47 Million dollar "bonus" compliments of the taxpayer bail-out. While you are at it, check out how much AIG PAC money McConnell has received over the years and the conflict of interest with his wife and the Company.

Whew! Anyone else here making $21,000 an hour?

It is plain to see, the Democrats want to bankrupt the country and the people.

With the bail outs already they have lined their own interest and pockets.

I hope this won't be an excuse made by the Republican Party to continue the damage they have been bringing to the country. I am all for fiscal responsibility but it has to be exercised in a bipartisan spirit. Any political gridlock will hurt our economy because time is of the essence.

watching bowl games over the holidays i've seen millions of dollars of advertising by the big 3 on big trucks.
every time i see these commercials i can see american taxpayers paying for it. there's no advertising any of their fuel-efficient cars. if i had the power i would want to see the big 3 let the power-truck, dumb, macho, "mine-is-bigger-than-yours" die off. europe and asia have and make small cars for a very good reason. gas prices and environment. still as i write this the big 3 will continue to conspicuously waste money on building rediculous vehicles. gas is going to go up again. it's just infuriating that the big 3 are basically throwing their fingers at us while they get bailed out. at least wall street tried to hide their wasteful ways after their bailout. one day industries and banking will come begging for money and there will be no money to give.

The power-glutton, republicons are so out of touch: When the warmonger and wild bush was WASTING BILLION$ in the UNPROVOKED Iraq war, they were silent.

When the INCOMPETENT wild bush was racking up RECORD DEFICIT & RECORD DEBT, the republicons were silent.

Now that a more competent leader with vision wants to FIX US ECONOMY, with INVESTMENTS that will pay dividends to American tax payers, the out of touch republicons are doing everything they can to assist the destructive bush in the continued tanking of the American economy!

Who voted in these OUT OF TOUCH, visionless and incompetent republicon losers?

Wake up, Americans!
Don't let another REPUBLICON DEPRESSIKON & REPUBLICON 911 hit you where the Sun don't shine!

Hi James - I was not defending the Unions, just the truth which is not something the poster I was responding to has any interest in.

The Unions are a small part of what has happened with the Big 3. The biggest issue is the complete and total lack of vision from their leadership and State Representatives who failed to call them on the carpet for that lack of leadership.

@paige
No, they do not. This figure includes retirees, healthcare benefits, etc. This has been debunked and explained extremely well for those interested in facts.
-----------------------------------
Why would you think this absolves the union of responsibility? The bottom line is the US automakers are still paying for the non-salary costs. That money is every bit as meaningful as the money they pay in salary.

The unions have destroyed the US automakers with these additional costs and they continue to put their companies in jeopardy if these costs don't come down. Toyota does not pay $73/hr when including all of their other commitments to their workers (they pay $47/hr when comparing full cost of labor).

It has also been discovered that the UAW has a six million dollar resort for it's members. If they can afford a six million dollar resort they do not need a bailout from the taxpayers.

The Untied Autoworkers Union makes $73/hr, $150K/yr for assembling vehicles,

Obamacrat for Palin,

Palin in 2012 would be good but we have four years of Obama and at least 2 years of a Democrat controlled congress. If they approve all of this there will not be a country to lead in 2012. We cannot sit by and let congress spend in such outlandish ways just because it will help elect our chosen politician. We must oppose this irresponsible spending now so our country can survive. Even if this opposition ultimately helps Obama, we must unite and stop this mortgaging of our childrens future.

I used to support President Elect Barack Obama, but the Bush-Obama bailout is an outrage. Only George and Barack can call their record deficit spending "investments" "in the future." We the American people voted with our dollars to put General Motors out of business. The Untied Autoworkers Union makes $73/hr, $150K/yr for assembling vehicles, but when we, the American people, say "that's too much" by buying Toyota, and Nissan, and Hyundai, the United States Government says "noooo... if you don't buy their cars, we're going to give them your tax money." They don't deserve to exist. The UAW striked GM's only profitable factory, the Chevy Cobalt's, as soon as GM turned in a profitable quarter last year; by definition, they will never be a viable company, ever. And now Blue states want "federal" money because they can't keep up their spending. New York Gov. David Paterson (D), New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine (D), Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D), Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland (D) and Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle (D) just said they need $1T of "federal" money to "stay afloat," and by "stay afloat" they mean to keep up their frivolous spending. They spent and spent and spent, and now that they're out of money, they are asking the "federal government" to give them money, but ladies and gentlemen, what they mean by "federal government" is red states that actually lived within their means, states that spent no more than they tax. Now they want the "federal" government to send the message, if you spend too much, don't worry, we will take it from someone that saved. and if you don't spend like drunken sailors, if you actually save your tax revenues for a rainy day, like today, you're wasting your time, because the federal government is going to come in and take it from you anyways. and they call this unity: Red states make and Blue states take. This is the fight of our day. Palin '12. PUMA!

This is just the beginning. The Democratic Governors are linning up to ask for an additional trillion dollar on top of the trillion dollars being proposed in this plan. This comes on top of a 700 billion dollar bailout for the banks and potentially 100 billion for the automakers. The steel companies have also started to talk about a bailout of several hundred billion dollars if their "buy American" plan does not work. There is even talk of the newspapers now asking for a bailout. On top of all of this Obama has promised 700 billion in new government programs.

This is insanity. The Democrats had better learn to be fiscally responsible or they will find themselves thrown out of office as the Republicans did in the last election.

Posted by: Jane | Jan 2, 2009 5:49:52 PM

Tim - Glad you think handing over $700 Billion dollars to Wall Street with no method of accountability is amusing.

Posted by: Paige | Jan 2, 2009 5:42:51 PM

If all the GOP leaders are going to do is obstruct than Obama should just not even bother with them.

In February there should be at least 58 Democratic Senators after Blago is impeached and Quinn appoints a Democratic Senator for Illinois.

i think you're reading into that one a bit paige.. lol

Posted by: tim | Jan 2, 2009 5:25:39 PM

At least Boehner didn't start crying again.

Posted by: JR | Jan 2, 2009 5:19:46 PM

Boy, it sure is a shame that old Grandma McConnell and Mr. Boehner weren't this conscientious during the bush admin. This country may be in better straights if they had. Now they just appear to be obstructionists.

"Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., in a statement this afternoon said "that every dollar needs to be spent wisely and not wasted in the rush to get it spent."
______________________________________________
So...when a Democrat is President the money must be "spent wisely", but when the Republican President, his Treasury Secretary call for a $700 Billion dollar bail-out of Wall Street - McConnell's okay with money not being "wisely spent", "wasted" or even accounted for......

Posted by: Paige | Jan 2, 2009 5:10:37 PM

Don't worry Obama worked all this out in theory in college with one of his problem solving groups
