Military Times Poll Shows Skepticism for New Commander in Chief

January 01, 2009 8:47 PM

The Military Times today published a poll indicating that about 60% of active duty servicemen and -women are uncertain or pessimistic about their new commander in chief. One third say they are optimistic, including eight out of 10 African-American servicemen and -women.

The poll also indicates that most active duty servicemen and -women oppose repealing the Don't Ask/Don't Tell policy prohibiting gays and lesbians from service openly in the military. Nearly 10% say repealing the policy would cause them to leave the military as soon as they could.

The raw data can be found HERE. The survey itself comes with the caveat that the group polled "under-represents minorities, women and junior enlisted service members, and over-represents soldiers." The poll is of its readers, and is not scientific.

Those who have not served in the military are just as patriotic as those who have. And military personnel who are still serving and speak out against their Commander-in-Chief should be accused of treason - not HIGH treason, but treason, nonetheless.

Much ado about nothing. It was a survey of subscribers to the newspaper who responded to a questionaire.

Obama has a couple of good video clips on Army Times now. I think that our entire country is going to undergo a great and positive transformation. It won't just be Obama - it has to come from us. It is sooooo time for people to realize that freedom is not just the ability to accumulate more stuff and democracy has to involve face-to-face discussion.

Someone comes up with some data that says there are some people who are not confident in the liberal messiah. So naturally that data is flawed, the source is flawed, the have some hidden agenda with Bush...LOL....what a group of fools.

The survey was "non-scientific". Here is some "true" data for you:

During the campaign, troops deployed overseas donated to Obama's campaign by a 6 to 1 margin.

Military votes represent 15% of total Presidential votes of which 44% of them voted for Obama.

Obama had countless endorsements of over 25 Generals and high-ranking Military Personnel.

Contrary to your idea that Obama does not have "the skills required to govern anything, let alone make decisions that military can have confidence that he will stand behind.", I think the Military who donated to his campaign, voted for him and supported him speak the truth. You are simply chewing gum for the right wing radicals...

This poll was completely bogus, but that won't stop the clueless corporate media goofballs from hyping it, since it gives the results they want their readers to believe.

The Military Times poll was made up of a SELF-SELECTING population of their readership, which is disproportionally old, retired, angry white males. It's no different than countless online polls that showed McCain winning 4-to-1 against Obama or Obama winning 4-to-1 against McCain, depending on which web site was running the poll.

Here's what the Army Times own web site says about their "methodology:

Although public opinion pollsters use random selection to survey the general public, the Military Times survey is based on responses from those who chose to participate. That means it is impossible to calculate statistical margins of error commonly reported in opinion surveys, because those calculations depend on random sampling techniques.

"The poll is of its readers, and is not scientific."

Why save the most (or only, really) important piece of information for the last sentence? It is well-known that Military Times' subscribers are more conservative than the average member of the military, and yet their pro-Republican polls are frequently being used as if they were representative of the military as a whole.

Military men and women could go with Bush and Cheney, the warmongers, Obama is a great leader who will brillantly do war when necessary but he is for peace and will bring peace everywhere and not wars as Bush and Cheney have done.

"No thank you for your insubordination to the President Elect if you were still in the military.

Please care to elaborate on your new career as a fortune teller. How do you know Obama will do less than you did for this country?

Please elaborate on your great prophetic powers.

Omentum,

He does not need any special powers. By Definition he has already done more for this country than Obama will. He is a RETIRED officer. That means at least 20 yrs of service. Obama has not yet served a single year. I do not count his little foray in the Senate. He was not there but a few months before he decided to get back to campaigning.

Anyone who puts in 20 or more has already sacrificed more than any politician who has not served in the military! If you can't understand that, then you by defintion are just plain ignorant!

I am not sure if this honorable man is married or not, but it is a given that any military wife has sacrificed more for her country than Michelle has had to.

His comments are not insubordination at all. They are based on his personal expereince. You liberals are amazing, you attempt to destroy someone like Sarah Palin, but then you turn around and try to make us beleive Obama is somehow a more qualified person. He is without question a great campaigner, but he has ZERO, REPEAT ZERO expereince at governing anything!

I hope he is sucessful, but the doubts from those in the military are well founded.

Someone comes up with some data that says there are some people who are not confident in the liberal messiah. So naturally that data is flawed, the source is flawed, the have some hidden agenda with Bush...LOL....what a group of fools.

As far as someone claiming Clinton did so well...that too is a joke. He drew so many lines in the sand for the Bosnia situation and then backed down that no one took him seriously there at all. His management of Somalia in 1993 was a complete cluster-****. He had numerous opportunities to get Bin Laden and missed on them all.

There are legit reasons why the men & women of the armed forces are concerned by an Obama Administration. Lets see, he was just another state legislature when he ran for the US senate. He won, and within just a scant few months, he decided to run for the President's office. Exactly where in all that time did he gain the skills required to govern anything, let alone make decisions that military can have confidence that he will stand behind.

Oh, I'm sorry, I forget...none of that mattered when people elected him. Well, it is about to matter a whole lot!

After all the BS from liberals about no exit strategy for Iraq, WHY HAVE YOU NOT BEEN ASKING FOR AN EXIT STRATEGY FOR AFGANISTAN???

Obama has stated many many times that he wants more forces there. Strange we dont hear a peep about how many Billions a month we will be spending there, or nothing about an Exit Strategy!

More Liberal Hypocrisy!!!!

You bash Bush for this, so why are you not asking these questions of Obama?

Dear Peace Train, Please read "The Limits of Power" if you read anyone else's writing. Talking the way you do is no way to put our country back in order. It is going to take all of us - and giving up the idea that accumulating as much as we possibly can is the definition of freedom. There are higher purposes for human beings, as, I am certain, you understand. Happy New Year, love, Mom

It is a interesting article.

The Military has no faith in Obama.
He will be a one term president.

====================================

Well THIS military member is one of the EXTEMELY OPTIMISTIC one. Everyone I conversate with in the military are optimistic as well.

If you want to make a statement, you put it in a poll. You skew the numbers to state your opinion and you publish the poll.

Don't believe everything you see.

P.S. Santa Claus is a fictional character. Hate to bust your bubble.

Jake...

You never cease to amaze me.

The poll is of its readers, and is not scientific.

Most troops go online for news not the Military Times.

Perhaps a scientific poll would be better as a news story? But then Drudge wouldn't put it up on his front page. I bet most of the media picked this story up from Drudge?

cheney needs to spend some time behind bars after his actions over the last 8 years. bush needs to go to Texas and stay out of the way. A breath of fresh air will be coming to DC on January 20th. It is going to take a couple years to clean up the mess from the bush/cheney boys.

Posted by: pt | Jan 2, 2009 9:36:49 AM

Obama had 2009 Navy contributors vs. McCains 841. Says it all. Who cares about some off-beat poll geared towards Republicans.

Posted by: Common Sense | Jan 2, 2009 8:15:00 AM

Jake---come back when you have some real statistics. not this garbage in-garbage out mess. in this case "there are lies, damn lies and statistics."

this is an invalid survey that isn't a true poll of all active duty service men and women.

this only appeals to "aware2you": "PEBO marinated in the cesspool of Chicago palm-greasing politics and thuggery, was not vetted and has no experience." he (or she) is only interested in these pseudo-surveys to trash the new president. talk about hate and vile bile. as if this person woould ever have voted for Hillary Clinton, lmao. just a Limbaigh/O'Reilly/Hannity hate baiter
