More Daschle Tax Issues
January 30, 2009 11:24 PM
ABC News has obtained the Senate Finance Committee Report on Tom Daschle's nomination to be Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, which indicates that Daschle's tax problems were even more substantial than earlier reported.
The report indicates that Daschle's failure to pay more than $101,000 taxes on the car and driver a wealthy friend let him use from 2005 through 2007 is not the only tax issue the former Senate Majority Leader has been dealing with since his December nomination prompted a more thorough examination of his income tax returns.
Mr. Daschle also didn't report $83,333 in consulting income in 2007.
The Senate Finance Committee Report also notes that during the vetting process, President Obama's Transition Team "identified certain donations that did not qualify as charitable deductions because they were not paid to qualifying organizations. Daschle adjusted his contribution deductions on his amended returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007 to remove these amounts and add additional contributions." This adjustment meant a reduction in the amount he contributed to charitable foundations of $14,963 from 2005 through 2007.
With the unreported income from the use of a car service in the amounts of $73,031 in 2005, $89,129 in 2006 and $93,096 in 2007; the unreported consulting income of $83,333 in 2007; and the adjusted reductions in charitable contributions, Daschle adds a total of $353,552 in additional income and reduced donations, meaning an additional tax payment of $128,203, in addition to $11,964 in interest.
On January 2 of this year, Daschle filed amended tax returns to pay the $140,167 in unpaid taxes.
The Finance Committee staff still is reviewing whether travel and entertainment services provided Tom and Linda Daschle by EduCap, Inc., Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation, Academy Achievement, and Loan to Learn should be reported as income. Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Daschle made use of the jet belonging to EduCap, a non-profit student loan organization.

I voted for Obama and still think his ideas for getting this country through these bad economic times are sound. HOWEVER, that having been said, I must say I'm angry that he's even CONSIDERING appointing people who not only do not pay their income taxes, but also act as if it's nothing! Perhaps they would feel differently about it if they were ordinary people who have seen a relatively small mistake grow (with penalties and interest) until they owe the IRS a fortune -- have their wages attached or even lose their homes-- for a tax debt that they couldn't pay. Perhaps they are so out of touch as to not realize how the IRS treats ordinary citizens. Why is it that the IRS hasn't treated Congressmen the same way? How many other of our public servants in Washington owe back income taxes? I think Obama's team ought to check out everyone in Congress and let their names be known to the public. Then he should prove to the American public there is no double standard. The laws have been on the books since they put Al Capone in prison for not paying his income tax.

Why aren't they people outraged at what
Nancy and company tried to push off on the tax payers at a time when they tell us we need all the goverment help they can give us.And then load up a bill with more pork than any thing we have ever seen. They lie, cheat and steal from the American people behind the mask of helping us.I guess Obama is looking for a place in his cabnet for Blogo and Madoff they should fit right in with the rest of his honest group.

Can someone name the bogus charities Daschle claimed ?? That would be very telling.

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss". Change we CAN'T believe in.

Obama is bad news for decent people -- IMPEACH him and his little dog Biden, too.

I'm totally dismayed at the antics wealthy politicians are pulling over on the "real" workers. No one should be confirmed if they are not totally 100% above board, and paid up on ALL taxes, PERIOD. No free rides.

How many of us can trust Tom Daschle, a tax evader/cheat/avoider to be anything but a deceiver? Does the prez really think he can get us to believe this is "change we can believe in?"

I believe I have heard say that politics are sort of corrupt in Chicago... Obama and how many more in his administration are from there. Makes me wonder what are we in for when we thought we were in for a change we could believe in...huh.

Dopey Joe Biden said during the campaign
that it is "our patriotic duty to
pay more taxes"!
Does that make Geithner and Daschle
Traitors? Hypocrite Thy Name Is
Democrat!

There won't be a "general strike" -- even if you tap your toes together an wish very, very hard!
Did you forget you and your opinion are in the minority.

"When you try to make a point using false, overstated or distorted information -- your position is severly weakened and your voice is muted."
The nice thing about Rangel is that -- unlike, say, Geithner and Daschle -- he's more Obama-like: "popular" and "black".
Any poster who isn't either in the government or a dedicated observer thereof might be mistaken as to which tier of on-the-take -- state or federal, House or Senate, Democrat or Republican -- any particular politician (other than the supposedly post-partisan Puppet, who indeed has coverted the formerly-"Democratic" Party to the ends of the "Obama" organization) occupies.
It's GOOD that people comment. Otherwise, they might be out parking cars in the freeway interchanges, or however OUR General Strike is going to start ...

Google up today's "The Daschles: feeding at the Beltway trough", available at commondreams and at original publisher salon ...
... in which Glen Greenwald quotes Matt Taibbi (Rolling Stone):
"Tom Daschle would ____ off a corpse for a cheeseburger."

Danny wrote yesterday
"I hate to upset your apple cart, but we aren't referring to just one little tiny error. We're talking about half his cabinet.... It's not just one person who didn't pay taxes. And it doesn't stop there... it extends to charlie wrangel - who is still chairs the ethics committee."
Danny, the cabinet consists of more than four people. Two of those who have been nominated have been found to have issues regarding paying income tax. One of these has already been confirmed -- that, by both Dems and Repubs.
The other man you mention is not a cabinet member, he is US Representative from NY 15th District - Charles Rangel and he is not the chairman of the ethics committee -- he chairs the "House Committe on Ways and Means". He is, indeed being investigated by the House Ethics Committee (as well he and ANY other member of Congress regardless of their political affiliation should be).
When you try to make a point using false, overstated or distorted information -- your position is severly weakened and your voice is muted.
Get the facts folks. We can surely debate the things we disagree about, but not without honesty and a lot more reality than one reads on these boards regularly.

"Daschle made use of the jet belonging to EduCap, a non-profit student loan organization."
Google up "EduCap, a Lender Under Investigation, Says It Will Reduce Student-Loan Operations". Leaving aside the question of WHY a "non-profit" that makes loans to un-rich students HAS a porivate jet, HOW can the "Obama" organization be planning to palm this guy off on US citizens AGAIN, when his own state finally managed to get rid of him in public office?
Doing away completely with non-profit tax status would be a jolly good thing, as would investigating the tax and corporate connections -- aside from the obvious CAMPAIGN financing, of course -- of EVERY member of the Congress.
The "Obama" organization shows itself to be made up of mobsters, more every day.

He does not qualify to lead the administration's team to fight the insurance companies. He has worked for insurance companies and he does not pay his taxes. Barack Obama must find another person, period.

Minnesota Charlie said: "Daschle doesn't pay his taxes??? It's Bush's fault."

Thank you. I was wondering why it was taking so long for someone to blame Bush for this, too.
C'mon, people. Don't you know the rules for these forums? You MUST blame the Bush administration for EVERYTHING! You better act fast, though. This "blame Bush" rule will eventually be changed in the near future. Get your blaming in while you can.
I appreciate Minnesota Charlie for knowing and following the rules :)

Taxes, penalties and interest should be paid and that is non-partisan. The bigger issue is that the tax system is too complicated for anyone to correctly complete the form and allows obfiscation by dishonest people or honest mistakes.
I worry about people that govern when they can't perform life's simple tasks like driving themselves, managing their real estate or caring for their children, shopping and preparing meals....

The Daschel TAX PLAN sounds like a great stimulus package addition ...
Let EVERY AMERICAN avoid the next $100,000 in taxes and watch the economic recovery.
Why waste this guy in HHS when he could be guiding us out of recession.
PS ... how much did he pay in penalties and interest for late payment of his tax bill when his conscience (or something more tangible) caught up with him?
