Moving Weekend for the Obama Family

January 01, 2009 2:43 PM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: The future first family is packing up their Chicago home and moving down to Washington, D.C. this weekend.

The move -- earlier than most for incoming presidents –- was prompted by their daughters' school schedule. Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, start school on Monday at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

Starting this weekend, the Obamas will be staying at a luxurious Washington, D.C. hotel, The Hay Adams, just across the street from the White House. On Jan. 15, the Obamas will switch temporary housing and stay at the Blair House, a guest house of the White House, until Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.

While Mrs. Obama and the Obama daughters ease into their new school schedule, President-elect Obama will continue to work on transition matters from the nation's capital. With his cabinet already chosen, Obama transition aides say one of the top issues the President-elect focus on is the economic recovery plan.

The Obama's will keep their Hyde Park family home in the South Side of Chicago, as the family intends to visit their hometown often.

T....in light of all the problems, I am not sure if there is anyone qualified at this time. But, it does have to be someone that has some experience, and I do not think the right choice has been made. More folks voted with their hearts, the media hype and not their intelligence in this election. This was a media candidate and they made sure he won.

T and center one.....read my post again.
There were more candidates than McCain and Obama. You are assuming that I voted for McCain; there were others to vote for. Of course obama was a media candidate, did you hear anything against him other than just mentioning names and the wright trash? The media refused to let the truth be heard. I know you don't agree, but Palin was trashed and the media turned their backs to the wrongdoings of obama. As far as, intelligent and younger man, I think you are letting your heart control your thinking and not your intelligence.
Regan was an actor....just maybe obama was a better actor..hum. Only time will tell, think lots of folks will be sorry that they voted for him.

Molly – I disagree with your perspective that Obama was a media candidate and “they made sure he won.” McCain had the experience, but in the weigh-off, even Republican voters decided an intelligent, younger man (who everyone knew was a Chicago pol) was a better option for our country than 4 more years of Republican policies. It was the disastrous economy that pushed middle of the road voters to Obama, not the evil liberal media.

molly---so you think i guess that mccain was your choice...if so he would continue doing things the same way as bush and we can see how that has worked..also the crazy kook palin would have been a heart beat away from being the president and then we would have been in real trouble.

Posted by: T | Jan 2, 2009 1:45:31 PM

molly----but obama is hundreds of times better then mcsame and millions of time better then bush. we have to hope and help obama change this nation,we must get away from what the republicans have done, and obama was the best chance of that. we know for fact we would have got same old same old from mccain. and sounds like you dont like clintons,so who would you have liked.

Posted by: T | Jan 2, 2009 1:40:18 PM

T...just how do you know I am a republican? What I am reading in this blog, most don't hesitate to say they are democrat...You can't educate stupid.
A smart democrat would have looked at his voting record, his associates (friends) and his qualifications. But no, the word "change" was more important, and just what did you get: more Clinton mess and an unqualified obaba from Chicago.

The Obamas staying for 2 weeks at the Hay Adams hotel has ZERO to do with proving he supports the Middle Class. I’m thoroughly Middle Class and I’ve stayed at the Hay Adams Hotel – it is like stepping back in time, filled with history and antiques, worth every dime because it’s two blocks from the White House and an easy walk to Washington DC museums. My family of 4 did not stay in a Presidential Suite, but we also shared one room – it was one of our most memorable family vacations ever. And for those of you bi*ching about the cost for Secret Service, just check out the price for other hotels in the neighborhood - there is always a higher cost for conveniently located hotels.

It would be interesting to know who is paying for the Hay Adams for the Obamas- not to mention the secret service detail.
He's done a lot of expensive traveling during the campaign and his vacation, and we have to pay for his SS whenever he decides to go anywhere or stay somewhere exclusive.

A comment on logistics-- I have no problem with where the Obamas are staying until its time to move to Blair House. He can afford the hotel, so why not? What I wonder is the practical matter of whether this rush to move to Washington so the girls could start the semester with their classmates was necessarily the best idea. Having moved numerous times as a child, I know that new schools are a major adjustment no matter when you come in. The Obama girls are going to stand out even in such rarified company regardless of whether they are there on day one or not. Why not bring them in next week or the week after instead?

If I understand correctly, they left their old familiar home in Chicago before Christmas, stayed through the holidays in Hawaii-- a familiar place even if the specific house they were staying in this time is unfamiliar. The impression I got from the news is that the Obamas would return from Hawaii this weekend, going straight to DC. So the girls will adjust to jet lag and a new hotel home and head to class all simultaneously. Then after ten days or so, they will move again, to Blair House, and a week later, into the White House. Sounds like lots of disruption.

The Obamas have rightly emphasized the importance of prioritizing the girls and their needs. So I think it would have been nice if they could have come up with a way to cut a little bit of the chaos. There is so much for the girls to absorb. So maybe they take a few days off at the beginning of the semester, recover from the time change, maybe even stay a week or so with grandma back in Chicago before the move-in to Blair House. Then, tanned, rested, and ready, they could join the students at Sidwell Friends ready to make new friends and settle into Washington life.

Or do other parents on the forum see it differently? I can see both sides-- throw it all at them at once and let them adjust quickly and get it over with versus minimize the changes even if it means missing some days of school.

Mildred.........You said."Why did I vote for this guy, I'm beginning to wonder!!!!!...You were duped...!!! We all want change. Unfortunately, Obama is more of the same politics. The Clintons and Obama are dishonest and corrupt.

CW......I totally agree with you!!!!
I said that many, many folks voted for obamba because they were apologizing in answer to so what's post.
He may have another crediability problem: just read that obamba's name may come up in the fraud trial of Norman Hsu.

Your prejudice are showing! Many of the past president have been knowingly of MONEY prior to their job promotion. You didn't have a problem with it. There is no difference. If Bush can fly to Iraq our our dime as a lame duck without any benefit to anybody and we support it, we support this President-Elect also.

Go write a book, as Mr. Obama did to EARN some income, or are you not capeablwe of writing hate mail while defying the one of the basic principals of our system.

Everyone has the right to campaign, however, after elected their EVERYBODY'S President.

We have serious issues, the warS, Economy, our SAFETY, i would hope that your hopes that the new President Elect do an outstanding job and support them instead promoting internal destruction.

Wow, what dedication to country do you haters have.

The school that Obama's daughters are attendin in Washington is Sidwell Friends. The cost is about $30,000 per child per year.

Posted by: CW | Jan 2, 2009 10:26:59 AM

============================

That's comparable to how much it takes to house an inmate each year.

Where's you outrage about that?

Posted by: Omentum | Jan 2, 2009 10:53:58 AM

I don't expect them to stay at a Motel 6. Besides some posters have made some good points. Why criticize him when you see how Bush and McCain live?
