PEBO Intelligensia Meetings: Lamb Chops with Conservatives, Bupkes with Liberals

January 14, 2009 4:05 PM

President-elect Barack Obama chatted this morning with some of the nation's more prominent liberal columnists and pundits, as well as others perceived as more moderate.

Meeting with the president-in-waiting this morning at his Transition office in downtown Washington, D.C., were Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, E.J. Dionne and Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, Ron Brownstein of the National Journal, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow, and Gerald Seib of the Wall Street Journal.

Last night Mr. Obama dined on lamb chops with dukes and lords of the conservative punditocracy, but the libs and centrists he met with today didn't even get so much as a slice of brie -- prompting some ribbing.

The president-elect "was teased about having dinner with conservatives who trashed him and a meeting with no refreshments with this group," one attendee tells ABC News.

The meeting was first reported by Politico's Michael Calderone.

I'm still trying to figure out who the centrists are for today's meeting? It seems like last night were conservatives (minus the centrist Brooks) and today was liberals.

What happened to your invitation to all these dinners and meetings Jake? See, you should have been a pundit. You and your family are welcome at my place anytime. We probably won't have lamb chops (Good grief, who can afford lamb chops? Well, I guess George Will can.), but I can definitely arrange for some 'refreshments'. You and your wife like steak and beer, right?

Blockheads! You really do not want to be accused of "buying" the press by offering them any chops,or anything else, but you can surely try to sweeten and soften up the "other" side by gnawing on chops with them.

It was a good strategy to show up with newspeople of a different persuasion the following day. His president-elect style is very similar to his campaigning, as will be the presidential.

Yeah, where is the story?

They met for a dinner party which Will hosted. And he naturally chose the menu since he was the host.

The other one was a day time meeting at transition headquarters. I am sure they were offered coffee, but is it really a slight not to be feted with a full meal in an office building?

The only story here is that Michael Calderone thinks Sullivan belonged in the conservative group. Whatever.

Last night Obama ate on George Wills' dime. Today folks would have had their food paid for by taxpayers and contributors.

Good move, Obama.
