President-Elect Obama's Spider Senses Are Tingling

January 10, 2009 10:02 AM

After the British Telegraph printed a list of 50 facts you may not know about Barack Obama -- which included the tidbit that he collects Spiderman and Conan the Barbarian comic books -- the folks at Marvel Comics were prompted to act.

"When we heard that President-Elect Obama is a collector of Spider-Man comics, we knew that these two historic figures had to meet in our comics' Marvel Universe," said Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. "A Spider-Man fan moving into the Oval Office is an event that must be commemorated in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man."

And next week, a short comic adventure featuring both icons will hit comic book stands. The story is set for Inauguration Day -- which photographer Peter Parker is assigned to cover -- when an imposter, the notorious Chameleon, prompts your friendly neighborhood Spiderman to leap into action.

"Hiya, prez-elect!" he says. "Loved ya in the debates."

Spidey also wonders if Vice President-elect Biden is still mad at him for confusing him with The Vulture on an Amtrak train once.

The president-elect a few months ago told Entertainment Weekly he "was always into the Spider-Man/Batman model.  The guys who have too many powers, like Superman, that always made me think they weren’t really earning their superhero status.  It’s a little too easy.  Whereas Spider-Man and Batman, they have some inner turmoil.  They get knocked around a little bit."

Or looking at the illustrations for that matter.

Obama's character won't be a Superhero in the comic. He will just meet the Superheroes.
I think it's great that Obama is a Spiderman fan. Spiderman represents an ordinary guy thrown into the position of being a hero by circumstance. He sacrifices a lot of his personal life and safety to help others.
Very similar to the life of an honest politican.

Long live Marvel Comics!

I still think Spider Man overcoming the Evil Village Idiot and the Virtiolic Blonde aren't bad topics.

Spiderman is fictional character....
Obama is a real live toon.....and our
CinC. When will his superpowers be
revealed?....I mean to someone other
than MSNBC anchors.

Yawn

People who make a living creating fictional heroes know a strong popular character when they see a real one.

An episode might come up with BO the Spider man battling the chameleons once more--who this time, are actually usurping, cleverly disguised neocons out to ensnare him unsuspectingly into their web.

James, et al - lighten up.

I guess Marvel is desperate for people to buy their comic books they had to have a story with Obama in it.

I don't see Obama as anwhere close to super hero material. Do super heroes develop twitches because they feel a little stressed out? Do super heroes try to triangulate on every position just to maintain their popularity or do they just simply do the right thing regardless of how people react?

Better save the hero worship for someone else.

HH, would not a fake imposter in fact be the real thing?

Posted by: Shockolit | Jan 10, 2009 1:10:42 PM

Obama certainly relates to heroic figures in either comic book or historic forms.

Posted by: kat | Jan 10, 2009 12:15:44 PM

I dunno: Obama's vibe is more "Liane, Queen of the Jungle".

"...the Barney Frank bedside lamp..."

Ummmm, I don't think that I'd like to read that one.

Nooo, that'd be an ACTUAL lamp. The former Democrats can sell themselves like the "Davey Crockett" merchandising phenomenon reborn, right up until the General Strike ... when the whole bestial lot of 'em will sink beneath a sea of shoes spontaneously hurled by the enraged citizenry.

Isn't He cute? Nooo, He really ISN'T.

Ya gotta gettem while they are young, let the brainwashing of the youth begin. All hail the Superhero Messiah! I really do love Spidey though.

"...the Barney Frank bedside lamp..."

Ummmm, I don't think that I'd like to read that one.

I'm betting that a Karl Marx superhero series is nearing the printing press.

Nothing short of Superman will do, to dislodge the notorious CHANGEling from His ill-gotten prospective presidency.

When do we get the "Rahm Emanuel in Kenya" coloring book, the Barney Frank bedside lamp, the Harry Reid Reader?

More bread, less circus.

Posted by: Belle Starr | Jan 10, 2009 10:48:36 AM

Hmmmm! It look fake. He is does not look like Spider-man.

Posted by: anonymous | Jan 10, 2009 10:39:54 AM

Two fake imposters in a comic book, and the Joke is on America.
