President Obama Today: Gitmo & Torture Executive Orders, Special Envoys

January 22, 2009 7:48 AM

Later this morning President Obama will sign new executive orders that will, among other tasks shut down the detainee center at Guantanamo Bay by January 22, 2010; shut down the CIA detention centers around the world; establish a process with Defense Secretary Gates and the Attorney General through which the Obama administration will decide what to do with the detainees going forward; and require all US interrogators to adhere to rules in the Army Field Manual.

Then in the afternoon, before an audience of State Department employees, President Obama and Secretary Clinton will announce new envoys, former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell as special envoy to the Middle East, and Richard Holbrooke as special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

We do not anticipate the President will be sworn in again today, but one never knows.

jhw539, you might have a point, but you see, Bush was not doing away with policies in an effort to protect non-existent rights of terrorists. PEBO is doing just that and looking like a naive wimp to our enemies.

shame on all of you whom criticize Obama, he didnt get this country in this mess, 8 years of Busch did, Obama is for the people of this nation as we are the nation, he hasnt taken a cent from lobbyist. what you dont understand and what you cannot understand is a movement of the people of this nation to take our country back and make its decrees, constitution and government work for all people of this nation. he is on the right track to save our nation and country. God bless him and his administration.

"Obama will NEVER achieve great things for our country as President Bush has,"

Bush's "great things" include:

4000+ dead American service men and women killed in Iraq, a war based on a lie.

100,000 dead Iraqi civilians, innocents killed as collateral damage in a war based on lies.

3300+ dead Americans from not just 9/11, but terrorist attacks across the globe as terrorist attacks leaped in both their veracity and frequency during the Bush admin.

The Economic crisis from its early warning signs to the thick of the crisis, Bush has been as absent a leader as one could imagine.

Bush has done one great thing:

And that is his commitment to stopping the spread of HIV and other horrible communicable diseases in Africa.

"I respect President Bush and he has been a very good President. I did not always agree with everything he did; but he did protect us and this great country."

Where was Bush on 9/11?

Oh yeah, frozen solid reading My Pet Goat.

Obama and his administration terrifies me. I do not feel that he is a true American and will not do what is best for our country. Look at one of the 1st things he did...stopped the trial of the terrorists that materminded the 911 attack. I am so fearful that he is wanting a more horrific attack on the USA that will make 911 seem like a small event in comparison.
I do, however, believe that God is in charge and He has Obama in for a reason. We have to wait and see.
And, the disgusting lyrics that I heard on the radio yesterday that was sung by one of Obama's favorite musical groups...That was beyond disgusting; and tells a lot about this president's thug mentality. I will not even allow his face on my TV at home, I turn it off whenever they out up a picture of him...just can't take looking at him.
I respect President Bush and he has been a very good President. I did not always agree with everything he did; but he did protect us and this great country. I always felt confident that he would always do what is right for the United States of America. Obama will NEVER achieve great things for our country as President Bush has, and his constant disrespect for Bush is sickening. Obama is NOTHING in my eyes.

Joe: "It will take 1 attack. Then reports like this will wonder why it happened, voters like the Obama worshippers will crap themselves, and it will be done..."

Just like 9/11, nine months after Bush took office? Let me guess: If we're attacked in 9 months time it's Obama's fault, but when we were attacked after 9 months under Bush it was Clinton's fault?

It seems some Americans were accustomed to living in fear and trepidation under Bush; therefore, suggesting anything to the contrary seems unatural to them. Bush, himself, was very creative in using his terror color codes to stoke them at will for fun. You see, the best way to control human beings is to keep them in perpetual fear of the unknown. That way, they will acquiese to anything that you do. That is the secret of dictatorship.

Yeah Joe, too bad Bush wasn't able to get Osama Bin Laden despite all his posturing and overblown bravado.

It will take 1 attack. Then reports like this will wonder why it happened, voters like the Obama worshippers will crap themselves, and it will be done...

Democratic foreign policy is a kin to the crash position.

And seriously bert, as much as you would like to make President Obama look bad, you're failing miserably.

And as much as you seem to want to ignore how Bush handled the situation - Bush had about 5 full years to bring some of these 'obviously guilty' people to trial - and he also failed at this.

Had he and his administration been even slightly less inept, this would not even be an issue now.

Posted by: pefros | Jan 22, 2009 11:56:57 PM

DUHHHHHHH!!!!

Obama said he was going to do this in almost EVERY campaign speech he gave. That would be hmmmmmm FOR OVER A YEAR

Posted by: pefros | Jan 22, 2009 11:53:43 PM

"Give credit where credit is due."

What am I supposed to be giving credit for?

I am not giving Obama credit for getting any speedy convictions which you seem to want to award him with.
1. He hasnt.
2. He has moved in the opposite direction.

There were 9/11 Families in the courtroom finally seeing justice administered and Obama pulls the plug because Code Pink gave him money for his campaign.

"You lost the election for very good reasons."

Yeah, America was voting for releasing terrorists. You are so right! That was the winning platform.

Or could it be the BILLION dollars Crystal Pepsi was marketed with? Like maybe a BILLION dollars helped Obama get 7 million more votes Kerry.

Because when you spend a BILLION dollars you can get a lot of people to do stuff. Thats why if you are in marketing and you are rolling out a new product, its nice to have a BILLION dollars.

Soooo two possibilities. Maybe people were convinced that convinced that having terrorists safely tucked away for a whole 5 mean years was a bad idea ... or it could have been the BILLION dollars.

Could go either way.

It's all fear and smear with the 'right wing' and such a failure to acknowledge the terrible missteps and ineptitude of the Bush administration.

You lost the election for very good reasons. And your fear and smear campaign failed miserably during the election.

By continuing the fear and smear, you're only digging the 'right wing' grave deeper ... . keep at it.

Posted by: pefros | Jan 22, 2009 9:40:49 PM

bert, again you miss the point due to your bias.

Bush and his administration had about 5 years to bring some of these 'obviously guilty' people to trial - and failed miserably.

A couple of 'military' trials finally got under way. Big deal . .. what an accomplishment in 5 years.

Give credit where credit is due. The Bush administration couldn't get it done.

My guess is that President Obama will get it done a lot faster, and with better values applied doing it.

"Listen, Bush and his administration had about 5 years to bring some of these 'obviously guilty' people to trial - and failed miserably."

Did you get the part where the trials were underway, like right now, and they had to be STOPPED because of the Lord High Arugula and his panderfest?

Seeing as there was a trial underway and he stopped it, its game, set and match that he will not bring bringing justice any quicker.

Once again I feel compelled to say that in keeping with our nation's self-proclaimed title of 'Home of the Brave', we Democrats have the courage to support Obama's efforts to uphold our principles before the rest of the world despite the right-wing fear-mongers attempts to scare us into policies and behavior that we ourselves would condemn if done by others.

Posted by: Skip | Jan 22, 2009 8:21:26 PM

well, you people asked for him and you got him. now i guess he is going to let them go so they can go plan another 9-11.

Obama we agree that torture is not a great expression of justice it is fueled by anger and resentment. Torture is rarely justified with liberty, by truth, or justice for all.
