Report: Reid Told Blago Not to Appoint Jesse Jr.

January 03, 2009 9:34 AM

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., called Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich before his arrest to argue against his appointing Democratic Illinois Reps. Jesse Jackson, Jr., or Danny Davis or State Senate President Emil Jones to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the Senate "because he did not believe the three men were electable. He feared losing the seat to a Republican in a future election."

Reid, the Sun-Times report says, favored the appointment of Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs director Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

In other news, CNN reports that a Senate aide says that if former Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris, Blago's pick to replace Obama in the Senate, "tries to enter the Senate chamber, the Senate doorkeeper will stop Burris. If Burris were to persist, either trying to force his way onto the Senate floor or refusing to leave and causing a scene, U.S. Capitol Police would stop him ... They [police] probably won't arrest him, but they would call the sergeant-at-arms."

Blagojevich was arrested NOT INDICTED. The Illinois House had the chance to take away his power(two weeks ago) to appoint by voting for a special election. THEY VOTED AGAINST IT.

Blago is a crook.
I know we are supposed to presume he is a fine, upstanding representative of his state, but if he appointed me to anything, I would run as fast as I could the other way.
Being appointed by a crook is not a great testament to one's integrity.
He should have declined.

Obama stated that some get into politics as a matter of public service..Joe Biden being an example..others get into it for personal service and gain.

The comments resonated and I hope he finds the right people who share his belief..

simplecake: And how do you know the gov. is tainted. Fitzgerald has stepped out of bounds and so has the committee. I can't wait until the gov. goes to court. Quinn wants that job so bad he can taste it and Madigan wants that seat. She and Quinn are a pain in the neck. I hope the gov. serves out his term so there will be an election. And I hope more dirt comes out against the democrats besides Richardson. Obama's administration is a joke and the people he picked except Hillary who outshines all of them.

The Constitution says "Each House shall be the judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its members..." Whatever a majority of the Senate says will decide the question.

While Governor Blagojevich can appoint anyone he wants, the Senate is allowed to judge whether the process that produced the prospective Senator is legitimate. There are huge questions about the legitimacy of Governor Blagojevich's appointment: he put the appointment up for sale and has been indicted for this!

The issue is not Mr. Burris or his skin color. (Although his acceptance of the appointment under the circumstances certainly makes me question his judgement.)

Both the Senate and the House have refused to seat prospective members in the past.

The Senate's deciding whether to seat Mr. Burris is legal and in fact a requirement of the Constitution.

In an email to me, Jessie White called Roland Burris "tainted". I've lost respect for Jessie White.

The State of Illinois cannot afford a special election. Roland Burris is a good man and legally appointed. Over the years our 2 party system just fosters these "pissing games" of power. The order of concern of these politicians is themselves first, party next, people last. All of them are corrupt and take gifts/money from lobbyist for their votes on special interest bills. Greed is uncontrolled.

The only way to get rid of the problems the senates and congress make, is to clean the entire bunch out and start anew.

Blago hasn't even been indicted and may not for 3 months, much less convicted. His appointment is legal and Burris is qualified. For the democrats to make this into the brouhaha they have is just plain stupid, not to mention that it appears racial.

Yhere should be national cry from black organizations such as the NAACP to bring this to a head.

======================================
You want to get rid of race in this country. Well, let's all be Americans now that you have your black president.
No more, NAACP, Black Chamber of Commerce, Black Miss America...be American!!!! Get elected by your qualifications and not your color.

How many of you on board are living in Illinois and know what the heck you're commenting about?

old harry should be more concerned about his own electablility if he keep putting his foot in his mouth.

Truth in Illinois politics? Some guys like Democrat Jerry Costello continues to be reelected. Belleville Il is a hotbed for corrupt lawyers.

African Americans should be outraged with the Democratic Party for it continued practices of racism in the US Senate, where only three African American were ever seated and where none are at this moment. Sure we elected our first half black as president but remember he would have never gotten the nomination or been elected president without the democratic parties most loyal followers.
Even the Hispanics and Jews have held more seats in the senate than african americans have. Let's get real the Illinois seat should go to a blackman oor woman. Yhere should be national cry from black organizations such as the NAACP to bring this to a head.

wow was he that desperate,i for the life of me can,t believe why would anyone allow them self to be used , by this descraced governor, why would he say yes ,knowing this whole process was tainted.

Posted by: simplecake | Jan 3, 2009 9:24:31 PM

I am appalled. The press can apparently say anything it wants to say, smear anyone it wants to smear, and the fanatics on both sides rush to believe them. Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty?" Don't Americans believe in that anymore? Everyone is at the mercy of the press, and few people seem to understand that.

For years Harry Reid has railed against the "corruption" in the White House. He's no better than the Republicans, and every day he gets even worse. He and Pelosi have such huge egos that the next four years will probably be a repeat of the last two. Reid and Pelosi both need to go.....NOW!

Posted by: Ed in GA | Jan 3, 2009 7:54:35 PM

As an older Illinoisan who voted for Burris, Durbin, and Obama in every statewide election each of them ever ran in, I am appalled that Mr. Reid, Mr. Durbin, and Mr. Obama appear to think they are above the processes of law, and are ready to block a legal appointment.

If Blago goes to jail, or gets impeached for what he said and did, he still has legal authority to make the appointment. Even Mr. Fitzgerald pointed that out in his press conference on the day of arrest.

Nobody in his right mind could ever seriously think the Constitutional provision for Senate review of the validity of the credentials of members permits rejection on any other grounds, all of which are essentially political, and dangerous to democracy. What the Senators have said so far is transparent sophistry, and the voters will not forget it.

If Mr. Durbin acts to disenfranchise me from representation by my lawfully selected Senator, I will never vote for him again.

Blago has a great plan we should all follow Blago idea's . Imagine auction ction sales on all political senators their telphones all wire taped and monitoring braclets on their ankles . call in and report in twice a day . maybe we could transparancy in our goverment

Is this sorry saga starting to sound ... a little like the run-up to Dan White's San Francisco assassination of George Moscone and Harvey Milk? Hope somebody's keeping Emanuel away from the Twinkies ...

("Rahm Emanuael set to resign his position as white house chief of staff next week in a formal announcement to the press."

Yeah? Is Barfy resigning as PE? Can Emanuel still serve in Congress, having resigned to Blago? Or will he try to un-resign, or to be sworn in despite HAVING resigned?)

teddy maniac: All black politicians in IL. are democrats. And democrats by nature are unprincipled. Therefore, there are no principled black politicans in IL. Has nothing to with race, it has to do with values.
