Republicans Pounce on Reid Story to Insinuate Possible Bias
January 03, 2009 4:08 PM
An interesting development after today's Chicago Sun-Times story in which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., suggests to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagoevich that he pick either Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan but not appoint either Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. or Danny Davis, or state senate president Emil Jones, to President-elect Obama's former Senate seat. (Reid is reported to have worried none of the three could win reelection.)
Senate Republicans are now pointing out that Jackson, Davis and Jones are all African-American.
Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, tees it off by saying: "For the last several weeks, Sen. Reid has led the charge to deny the people of Illinois a voice in choosing their next U.S. Senator in a special election. Now we learn that Sen. Reid also took the extraordinary step to lobby against two sitting U.S. Congressmen and the State Senate Majority Leader in Illinois, and instead told Gov. Blagojevich that he supported an appointment for an individual who recently lost a U.S. House election. The people of Illinois deserve a simple explanation from Senator Reid -- why does he believe these three Illinois officeholders are 'unelectable' to the U.S. Senate?"
More pointedly, a GOP Senate aide writes in an email, "I do think it's a fair question to point out -- what would the reaction be if a Republican had been pressuring a Governor not to pick one of the black candidates? You and I both remember the outrage over Trent Lott's comments at Strom Thurmond's birthday party. I'm not suggesting either of them is racist, just saying it seems like there's always a double standard on how R's and D's are judged on things like this."
What say you?

There is a double standard. The Democrats and the lapdog media accuse the Republicans of racism at the drop of a hat but ignore race baiting on the left. The Democrats will control both houses of Congress and the Presidency so there will be no place to hide. The catastrophe of the Obama Presidency and the media that protected him for the last two years will be obvious shortly.

You're wrong too. The term "Magic Negro" WAS first used in an LA Times op-ed, as reported in the Kansas City Star on January 1, 2009 (as well as many other places):
**************************************************
My previous point was that the nomenclature of Magic Negro has been used both recently and historically. The LAT article was categorically not the first time the term was used. Furthermore, it was used in a clearly racist song in its distribution through the RNC.

Kat @ 11:54:00 PM:
You're wrong too. The term "Magic Negro" WAS first used in an LA Times op-ed, as reported in the Kansas City Star on January 1, 2009 (as well as many other places):
"The evocative phrase “Magic Negro” was first applied to Barack Obama by Hollywood writer David Ehrenstein in a March 2007 op-ed in the Los Angeles Times that concluded: “Like a comic-book superhero, Obama is there to help, out of the sheer goodness of a heart we need not know or understand. For as with all Magic Negroes, the less real he seems, the more desirable he becomes.” Shanklin adapted the phrase to the tune of “Puff, the Magic Dragon” for a parody that featured Al Sharpton grousing." (I would provide a link, but my last comment was edited to delete a link I included).

Correction from 11:54 PM posting:
Okay. The Magic Negro caricatures are varied and go a long way back, all the way to 5th century China with African slaves being portrayed as possessing supernatural strength and knowledge. And yes, David Ehrenstein used the term in the LAT, but not in a racist manner. Then it was used in the song,"Barak the Magic Negro," which was clearly derogatory and originated with Limbaugh before it circulated the RNC.

"Magic Negro" was a term started by a DEM to describe BHO and his policies. The DEM paper LA Times published it.
******************************************************
Gee, that's a creative assertion - so much so, that there's nothing factual to it. "Barak the Magic Negro" originated with Rush Limbaugh.

carol will 6:27:36 "about any D would win N. IL, but it is very hard for someone from Chicago to win S. IL....Alot of whites do not like blacks there as they have never been around them that much. It is a sad, but true fact."
This is one of the dumbest comments ever and your source is you?? You first need to know that the only time anyone in Chicago is interested in the rest of the state is when money or votes are needed. I'd describe it more like apathy. Nothing like being at the mercy of do nothing but fight lawmakers.

Harry Reid doesn't have to be polite to the black community anymore.
Now that they have the growing Hispoanic vote to court, they can afford to ignore the shrinking African-American community and go back to being the party of slavery, secession and segregation...

This has Bam's fingerprints all over it. Reid should not resign unless we want to see Bam interfere in the selection of the next Senate majority leader. We all know when Bam gets involved it does not do anyone any good, well except for him.

Do those posting negative GOP comments remember Schumer (IndyMac leak and subsequent run on the bank), Dodd (Countrywide benficiary - largest mortgage company to fail and no disclosure yet by Dodd), and Frank (affordable housing for people who can't afford them, but subsidized by taxpayers)?
They were present during the 8 years you speak about. The economy started tanking when Dems took control of Congress. Do you know how and where laws are made? Or, do you think all that happens is based on policy and that ALL Bush's policies are/were bad. Many of Bush's policies are already being accepted by Obama.
This posting was about perceived racial bias by Reid, but has morphed into BDS, or more appropriately BS.

Haha agree totally.
What is most hilarious is that they are mostly responsible for the country being in the mess it is in right now and all of a sudden they now take the role as government consultants...... rofl hilarious
they have been the Who's Who of corruption and greed the past eight years.
hahahaha
And now ... all of a sudden, they are the "moral police" talk about the fox guarding the chickens
our stature on the international scene has been greatly diminished and I am literally in awe as fixed news trot these old geezers out who are "statesmen" calling themselves giving the new administration "advice". hilarious
would someone please tell them that America FIRED them.
The end of an error

Reid has opined that the Senate should seat Franken as Franken is currently in the lead even though the Minnesota recount is not completed and certified (Mpls Trib). If Harry can pull off denying Burris and seating Franken the fireworks should be fairly interesting for a while. Pass the popcorn.

Are there still people who actually support the Republican party? Oh my! they must be the few Americans who cannot read or write. After what George Bush and his minions did to this country's economy..you still have the heart to support that party..there are an aweful lot of spiked koolaid flowing! Heaven help us all and save us from the Republican party!
