Sorry Sox, the Obama Administration Won’t Play Ball on Hat Design

January 31, 2009 10:38 AM

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports:

President Obama’s home team -– the Chicago White Sox -– has created a special baseball hat as a tribute to their most famous fan. But don't place your orders just yet -- for legal reasons, the White House isn't playing ball.

The hat incorporates the Sox's popular black-and-white emblem -– which Mr. Obama himself has sported numerous times -– with a twist, to include the Obama campaign’s O logo on the side. “Obama” is written on the back.

“It’s a tribute more than anything,” Lou Hernandez, director of public relations at the Chicago White Sox, said.

The White Sox design team created two prototypes internally –- neither of which has been produced yet. The team has reached out to the administration to get their “approval and blessing” for use of Obama’s name and campaign logo first.

Additionally they have asked the new administration to tell them what charity Mr. Obama would like a portion of the proceeds of each hat’s sale to go to.

So far the team has yet to connect with the Obama administration.

“I don’t know the state of the discussion, we’ve reached out but have not heard back from them,” Hernandez said. “We will in no way move forward on this unless the president and the administration is comfortable with it.”

White House aides say that for legal reasons a deal with the White Sox likely cannot be made –- the president and the White House do not engage in commercial activity of this kind.

Juleanna Goldman of Bloomberg has more on the commercialization of the president HERE.

Good, if the "merchandizing of Obama" is finally over, maybe they can get the Obama merchandise out of the gas station I go to. Stickers, keychains, mugs, all kinds of cheap junk.

well, even if white sox don't take up the idea, some private, small enterprise will take this up, remember knock out goods are cheap and they sell.
What a good idea, sorry they leaked it, some one is now making profits, you will see the product out soon

dem in chicago, Is that landslide in 2012 the same landslide of debt that Obumma's "stimulus" will unleash to bury in new taxes (that is, the 'pubs, who actually pay taxes)? Or is it the landslide of tax-cheating, lobbyist-waivering corruption that is engulfing Obumma's presidency?

It is surprising how many people and organizations want to be identified with our new president. I like it, but I'm sure it is getting so aggravating to repubs. Since Chicago and the whole state of Illinois is so proud of Obama I hope they can come up with a nice compomise for their caps because President Obama is something to be very proud of.

WHEN WILL EVERYONE GET OVER THE MESSIAH?

The 'pubs don't stand a chance in 2012. Obama will be reelected in a landslide.

1919 White Sox scandal = Obama Administration! How fitting that he supports them too!

If Obama can't make money out of it, he'll be against it.

Chicago REPUBLICAN Governor is serving time in jail, so lets not forget him .

How about printing "Chicago, home to politicians that support liberal tax cheaters" across the bill of the hat?

Ugh! I am going to have to try to like the Cubs... :(

I have a better idea instead of being so direct with president Obama logo , how about.. just putting the number 44 at the front next to ' sox' since he was the 44th president.

In that way it keeps the sports theme of things and still honour in a indirect way.
